 Made by Canton Racing Products, these filters are supposed to have a unique combination of high flow rate, (no by-pass valve is fitted or required), and very high filtration of 8 microns - most other high quality filters are 18 microns.  The filter material is wrapped around a perforated steel core. Claimed interval between changes is 10.000 miles. Of course they are a bit spendy; $90 for the cannister and insert, $14 for replacement filters. The cannister stays on the bike, and the replacement filters are installed from the bottom. The model number for the XB Buells is 25-262 I was wondering if any of the high performance people on the board have heard of them? | ||

If that is the same Canton products that makes oil pans for autosports I would have to think it was top shelf, as oiling systems are their primary business. I ran one of their pan and dry sump 3 stage systems on a 5.0 stang a few years back. All my drag friends still use their stuff, I'll ask around. | ||

Wouldn't 4 1/4" be to tall? I believe the stock one is 3" on my XB12R. | ||

Good point Donald. I was wondering that myself. Right now my bike is in my friend's heated garage. I will go over there in the next day or two and measure. I sort of remember that there is quite a bit of room under it, because when I recently changed the filter, I used a cup wrench that went under the filter. I will report back. Actually, I was even gave some thought to using the longer one for added oil capacity and greater cooling. | ||

I'm cool with the K&N 177. They make a great filter and it is easy on and easy off. | ||

i doubt you will be able to get the element out even if the housing is short enough to clear the muffler. i would think you would have to take the whole housing off every time. maybe there woulds be enough play inside the canister to angle the element out and around the muffler but it would have to be a pretty skinny element. i guess it might be possiable though. just would hate to spend all that dough and have it not work, | ||

K+N177 is a very good filter. The nut welded on the bottom is a really useful feature when it comes time to change it out. :  On the other hand.................... Seems like I just can not stop fooling around with my Buell.  I am thinking that my oil seems to get pretty dirty, pretty quickly, and perhaps could use better filtering. The KN-177 as well as the Buell filters are just about the smallest filters currently produced. I am looking at the following alternatives which have larger filtering units than the stock filter. If I remember properly, there is quite a bit of free space under the oil filter. 1. The Purolator PL 14476. This filter is the same size as the Buell unit and the KN 177, but has a larger and finer filtering element. 2. The Purolator PL 14477 is about an inch or so longer than the stock unit. Not sure if it will fit, but I think it will. 3. The CM 25-262 discussed above. 4. The CM 25-462 this unit is 6 1/4" inches long. It adds about 4 oz. of oil to the system, and a much larger filter. Not sure if it will fit. I will check my bike in the next few days, ( it is in a friends heated garage instead of under my back porch), and report back. | ||

My M2 was much happier with the FL1A, which fit fine, and gave more oil capacity. One note.. the heavier filter will spin off easier, so throw a hose clamp and some safety wire on there if you go that route. Don't ask me how I know this :/ |
