Hello guys, Had a great weekend. I had my first Road America racing experience! They had the largest CCS race weekend ever there this past weekend. Just barely under 2000 entries. I had 4 of those 2000. I entered Supertwins and Lightweight Grand Prix (Amatuer) on both Saturday and Sunday (double sprint weekend). I also practiced on Friday. Friends Jimh and a few of the crew (Frank, Frank Jr., Nick, and Sara) were there racing, and a extremely nice customer of mine (Jeff K) let me use his pop-up camper. We even have an addition to the Buell riders racing Honda Hawks. Larkin (fellow Buell rider) bought and raced a Hawk for the first time this weekend also. Friday practice was interesting. The track was intimidatingly fast. I also had new tires that were yet to be scuffed in. I started out not liking the track at all, but by the end of the day Road America had warmed up to me. This track is FAST! My X1 was tapped out as fast as it could go in three straights, the caraosel never ends, and the kink puts the fear of god in you. It was interesting dealing with the many elevation changes there too. Saturday I got the jump on supertwins race and ended up getting an 8/18. I was happy finishing there with the likes of RC51's, TL1000R's, RSV's, 996's... by all rights they should of ran all over me, but they didn't! I then raced the Lightweight Grand Prix race and recieved my first ever trophy! I wasn't able to register until Sat. morning, so I was towards the back in the grid. I got a good start and finished fourth. I was only behind three 250 GP bikes that had a good gap on me. I was riding by myself for most the race. I came in screaming under my helmet!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great day. Sunday was even better. The race schedule was reversed, and I raced the Lightweight Grand Prix race first. I got a better start this time and went into corner one in fifth. By corner three I was in thrid and flying down the straight to corner 4 and 5 I popped up into 1st for a split second till an over grown chainsaw (250 GP bike) passed me. I then set out and followed for awhile, but this rider had to of been here before and knew more tricks than I did. I was out pushing the bike and didn't hear or see anybody for awhile, so I pulled the Kurtis Roberts look over my shoulder and saw nothing. I decided to back off a little and bring home the second place trophy. Crossing the finish line in second place was awesome. Seeing my freinds and family down pit road waving and yelling. WHAT A RUSH!!! I got ready for my last race of the weekend (another supertwins race), and while waiting to get onto the track in pre-grid, a familar face popped by to say hi. Henry Duga (Buell factory race support guy) came over to see how I was doing with the bike. I mentioned my second place finish that day and he already knew. It was really cool of him to come talk to me. I hope he'll happy with my progress in the future. So I finished 8/19 in the last race with an almost 7th place finish due to a corner 14 pass that didn't stick with a TL100R streaking past right at the peak of the hill before the finish line. I'm completely syched up for the next race weekend in May (19th,20th) at Blackhawk farms raceway. I think I have the possibility to bring home some trophies with a number 1 on them!!! Wish me luck, hope to see you there! Marty Hunt Buell Sales Sauk Prairie H-D/Buell Sauk City, WI 53583 CCS#979 AM |

Monday at Thunderhill, WOW! WOW! WOW! WOOOWEE! What a blast! My first time on a track! (taking turns, that is) dP "Safety" School. What a learning experience. What FUN! I can't say enough about these guys at dP, they go out of their way to teach you. by the end of the day, I had 3 (!) instructers work with me on the Track, showing me better lines and riding technique. And we were going FAST. I ended up being one of the 3 fastest guys in C group, a RC51 got by me on the front straight in the last session, and a GSXR750 took me on turn 2 same lap, he said I had slowed a bit the last time out( heat exhaustion, I think, but that's no excuse, we were all subject to it) and then an instructer went blowing by the lot of us, and showed us a thing or two. I managed to stay with them then, but that was tricky! I'm on a 2000 M2, stock footpegs, suspension.Rearsets and B group next time, then maybe racing( time and $) I was at Sears Point Sunday for Superbike and Pro Thunder, man was that some great racing. How about that Mike Ciccotto, started in the last row, and took the win, and it was only 16 laps! Now thats what I call racing! |

Caution Ray, racing is very addictive. Keep your bike fitted with top shelf race compound tires; and concentrate on dialing in your suspension . . . and with a little practice, you won't believe how much ass you can kick. Congratulations . . . and have fun |

If you're not watching the AMA superbike race right now on Speedvision, you are missing a GREAT freaking race! Eric Bostrom had the front wheel locked, with rear off the ground breaking into turn 11 trying to get by Duhamel. Yates takes a SERIOUS highside after leading by 2.5 seconds. Mladin ran wide on #11 and put the rear tire in the dirt, got it WAY sideways, hit pavement and comes flying down the straight with the front wheel in the air. Unbelievable! After trying unsuccessfully for 4 laps to get by Duhamel and make it stick, Bostrom leads!... Bostrom wins! HD takes 9th, 10th, and 11th (Picotte, Smith, Szoke). Not too bad. Tomorrow's World superbike will be even more rockin! Gotta return from the ride by 3 PM EST for race #1. I love this stuff. |

It seems you should'nt criticize the AMA if you publish a RoadRacing web portal, especially if your son races and wins. John Ulrich, father of Chris and the person who put together the grass roots AirFence Fund that embarrased AMA into using the fence, all the while complaining that it was costing them dearly, is continually in the face of AMA racing. From Roadracing World: ========= AMA Officials Tear 750cc Supersport Bikes Down To The Bare Frames At Laguna Mechanics for first-time AMA 750cc Supersport winner Chris Ulrich and fellow podium first-timers Daigoro Suzuki and Tony Meiring were told to strip their machines down to the bare frame under the eyes of AMA officials, following the race at Laguna Seca. The frames of all three machines were fitted into a jig and checked for stock measurements. All three machines passed the rigorous inspection and afterwards the mechanics and riders were seen working to reassemble the bikes so they could be rolled into their trailers (Ulrich and Meiring) or van (Suzuki) for the trip home. ============= |

lots of great racing this weekenD at Laguna Seca...Toyracer and Myself corner worked, on T2.Watched Tripp Nobles take the Holeshot in Pro Thunder, lead the pack around and find nuetral in t2!!I thought that only happened to Me!He had to run reaalll wide and let the pack pass before he got it going again on the short shoot to T3. Got to pick up 2 World Suberbikes, a Ducati (Ruben Zauess) and a Kawi., there arent as light as you would think when there on there side 2 feet off the track with the next wave bearing down on Ya.Watching Eric and Ben Bostrom coming in T2 sideways was incredible, wish I could have dirt tracked as a kid.Picked up the 750 ss polesitters bike twice,He must have felt terrible after setting the trck record in practice and then crashing twice in the main in the same corner. well all in all a great weekend.Thank God for speedvision, now I can see the rest of the race, and I dont have to sit on a tire wall!!! |

Mladin didn't race the WSBK!? Why not?! Bostrom's ruled Laguna Seca this weekend. Eric won AMA SBK and 600 SS. Big brother Ben won both WSBK races, walking away too. Prediction: B. Bostrom... 2002 WSB champion. If only all the tracks went left. |

Shooter, How much higher are the rear-sets to the stockers? I've ground probably 20% of mine away with the Banke risers fitted, and still not hit the edge of my tyres. PPiA |

Peter, the crossroads rearsets are about 3 inches higher than the stock peg position.I like the Banke peg risers, I have them on my S3 street bike. But there are not high enough for the track. They are actually 1 inch lower than the stock peg position on an X1. |

Hoban Brothers Racing takes second in Buell Lightning series AND Sportsman series!! Jeff Johnson did a great job again this year capturing #2 in both series. John, Jeff and the rest of the Hoban Brothers Race team should be extremely proud to do so well against teams with lots more backing(in the form of $$$). The whole crew at HD/Buell Cycle Center Waterloo Ia would like to congratulate The Hoban Brothers Race Team for a job well done. I believe that all they need is a few more sponsors and they would be a shoe in for the coveted #1 plate. If any of you are interested in helping E me and I'll hook you up with John. Copyright 2001, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. By David Swarts The racing version of the Buell XB-9R Firebolt made its public debut at Road Atlanta on Thursday, October 25 during practice for the WERA Grand National Finals and Saturday's AMA Pro Thunder finale. And a total of seven top-level Buell riders have descended on the AMA/WERA Pro Thunder finale in a coordinated attempt to wrestle the title away from series point leader Thomas Montano. According to Buell Racing Manager Henry Duga, newly-crowned 2001 Formula USA Champion Shawn Higbee is at Road Atlanta to “kind of just shake the bugs out” of the race version of the new, 2002-model Buell Firebolt XB-9R. If all goes well in practice with the largely untested version of the bike, Higbee may race it in the final round of the AMA Pro Thunder series. When asked what he was doing at Road Atlanta, Buell development rider Higbee smiled and said, “My day job. “We’ve tested a stock chassis with a race motor before,” said Higbee. The Firebolt at the track features an engine that combines XB-9R engine cases with the same cylinders and top end used on Buell’s current X-1-based Pro Thunder race bikes. The XB-9R racer uses the Firebolt’s stock fuel-injection system, with a custom exhaust systems. The engine has made horsepower “in the 130s”, according to Higbee. The chassis is close to stock. Stock XB-9R fork legs have X-1 lowers grafted on so that the Firebolt can run the same Marchesini front wheel, billet-six-piston Nissin brake calipers and conventional dual brake rotors. The forks are held by adjustable Attack Performance triple clamps that are currently set up at the stock geometry. Woodcraft clip-ons replace the nonadjustable stockers, and an Ohlins steering damper is positioned sideways, below the top triple clamp. A Penske rear shock is fitted, and the bike also uses the stock rear brake rotor and caliper; a 16.5-inch Marchesini rear wheel us used. Higbee said that he has been waiting for the day when he could race the XB-9R racebike for three years. The Buell personnel at Road Atlanta are also working on winning the Pro Thunder Championship. Since the inception of the AMA Pro Thunder in 1998, Buell has never won the title while Triumph has won once and Ducati twice. Now with Munroe Motors’ Thomas Montano poised to give Ducati a third consecutive Pro Thunder title, Buell has put forth extra effort to snatch the crown away. With a nine-point deficit, Buell's Mike Ciccotto has a mathematical chance of beating Montano for the Championship. And Buell has done everything it can to tip the odds in favor of Ciccotto. Ciccotto is riding his Hal's Performance Advantage Buell factory bike, and Tripp Nobles and David Estok are on their Tilley Buell factory bikes. But in addition to those series regulars, Michael Barnes will ride Ciccotto's back-up bike, and Jeff Vermeulen and John Jacobi are riding on Innovative Research Buells. With Higbee on the XB-9R Firebolt, that makes a total of seven Buells in the race. When asked if there are Buell team orders in effect at Road Atlanta, Duga said, “No, but the riders may choose to help Ciccotto, and yes, we want the Championship.” When asked if Rich Cronrath’s Innovative Motorcycle Research team was at Road Atlanta at Buell’s request, Duga said, “No, Rich called me and asked if he could come.” Asked about Duga's statement, Cronrath later said, “Yeah, whatever. That’s why my rider is on his bikes. Let’s just say that I’m here to help the cause.” When told that Duga had said that there were no team orders, Estok said, “Yeah, right. I feel sorry for Montano.” Nobles said, “Henry has to say that, but if I were in Ciccotto’s position, I would expect him to help me.” If Ciccotto wins the race and takes the bonus points for pole position and most laps led, Montano will have to finish second in the race to win the Championship. If Ciccotto doesn’t take the maximum of 38 points, Montano can finish third. As Ciccotto’s potential finishing position drops, Montano’s finishing-position requirements also drop. Although they may be able to control which Buell crosses the line first, the Buell riders can’t control which bike gets pole position, or can they? “We’ve got that figured out, too,” laughed Barnes. “If Montano wins the Championship, he’s the man!” said Ciccotto. Montano's response was, "Bring it on." |

Hi, I have started racing my S1W, and I was wondering if everyone else is running with the stock rubber isolators? Is there any alternative? Any comments would be appreciated. |

Buell Testing Buell XB9R Racebikes At Daytona, Participation In AMA Series In Doubt Copyright 2001, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. By David Swarts Buell American Motorcycle Company is at Daytona International Speedway with two testing agendas. After running 2001-spec Buell X-1-based Pro Thunder racebikes Monday, December 10, Buell’s 2003-model Buell Firebolt XB9R arrived at Daytona Tuesday in both Pro Thunder and Lightning Series specifications. As for the Pro Thunder racers, the bikes have received no serious changes from when the bike first appeared at the 2001 Pro Thunder series finale at Road Atlanta. The Pro Thunder bikes may not be called that for long, however. Speaking at the International Cycle Show in Long Beach, California on Saturday, Buell Communications Manager Paul James said that the company had not decided if it is going to continue to sponsor the AMA Pro Thunder class, if it is going to have Buell-supported teams in AMA Pro Thunder, have Buell-supported teams in AMA 750cc Supersport or if the company will have any involvement in AMA Pro Racing at all. James said that decisions would hopefully be made before the holidays. What James did know is that the Buell Lightning Series will continue as part of the 2002 Formula USA National Road Race Series. To that end, Buell brought Richie Morris’ 2001 Buell Lightning racebike along with a nearly stock Buell Firebolt XB9R racer. Buell officials are trying to determine where to put the horsepower limit for the better-handling XB9R so that it can compete directly against the heavier, 95-horsepower-limited Buell Lightnings in the series. The Firebolt that Tripp Nobles ran Tuesday morning at Daytona was equipped with what will become the official upper and lower race fairings, a racing exhaust system, a modified ECM, a chain drive conversion, a Penkse shock and a steering damper. Buell representatives said that the bike’s rear-wheel horsepower output went from approximately 80 to 90 with just the exhaust and re-mapping. Nobles’ best time on the undergeared Firebolt was a 2:10.972, well off a competitive Buell Lightning time at Daytona. |
