The funniest thing happened today when I went to Liberty Buell. On the way back home I stopped to fill the tank up, and as usual, I turned off the bike almost as soon as I stopped. The fan comes on loudly as the attendant approached me. The first thing he said is "you have to turn off the bike". I replied that it was off, and he stopped again and told me "you better turn that off!" At first I thought he was joking, but one look at his face and I know he was serious. Calmly I told him "It's off - the sound you hear is a fan". His response? Stood his ground and would not fill my tank! After a few perplexed minutes, the fan goes off, and he realizes that I wasn't lying. I just stood there waiting, and then he finally punched the code and handed me the gas nozzle, and walked away. Has this ever happened to anyone? Now that I'm home I think its funny, especially his face when the damn fan turned off.  Paul | ||

Its a good point really, I dont fill the bike until the fan stops It probably would be an ignition point ? | ||

I was going to comment on the bike too like Typeone... it looks really damn good. I was seriously thinking about that exact bike before I got my Ss... hmmm, I might have to do some thinking about a trade-in this summer...  Oregon has that dumb rule that you can't fill up your own tank either. I think that is stupid. That guy sounds like a weasel... sounds like he got burned a little after the fan turned off. I wonder how anybody could think any motorcycle engine could actually sound like that?? Weird. | ||

Weird. I've never heard of not being able to pump your own gas. They have to come out and unlock the pump with a code? What's that for, to keep people from stealing gas? And yes, that is a good looking bike. Like a big bumblebee! I also wait for the fan to turn off before I fill the tank, just in case. Besides, it usually takes me that long to get my gloves and helmet off, get the cap off, get my checkcard out, etc. anyway. It cracks me up that the guy thought that was the engine running. Wonder how stupid he felt when you cranked it up and thundered out of there afterwards.  Freakin pump nazi! | ||

I test rode a '03 Strom once. It was pretty quiet. Probably quieter than the Buell fan! Haha. But still, you'd think the guy could tell the difference. The Strom was fun and had a good torque. Almost bought one. | ||

It's been a few years since I've been in Oregon, but yeah... you can't even fill your own tank. The attendant has to hold the fuel nozzle and everything!! Stupid. Oregon is a pretty Liberal state though. Probably think everyone will blow themselves up because we don't know any better... | ||

Full service sounds like fun, but I could just see me arguing with the pump jockey over how full is full...and heaven forbid he dribble gas on my airbox cover or some other bonehead move like that. I know myself. I wouldn't be able to stand back and let them do it. The cage is another story, but not the bike. I don't even like people to stand too close to it, much less put gas in it. Wonder how often they get a lawsuit for vehicle damage. I'd imagine they don't get too many rocket scientists to be pump jockeys. Know what I mean? | ||

Thanks for the comments about the bike! This is my first Buell, and one thing is true about this bike - you can't get bored riding it! Its like riding a "wild beast", in comparison to my previous Japanese bikes! Soon it will be "Drummerized"!  In NJ motorists are not allowed to pump their own gas - they have to wait until the attendant pumps the gas. When it comes to motorcycles, the attendant gives you the gas hose, and you pump the gas. What happens is that the attendant has to punch in some code before the pump works. | ||

I think both states passed the law in the 40's or 50's. At the time, pumping your own gas was believed to be too dangerous for the common citizen to do. Now the citizenry in those states generally don't want the laws changed. | ||

I think Oregon has the law to add jobs, however, when it comes to bikes all they do is hand you the nozzle and a paper towel. Gas attendants do not want to be the one to drip gas on your bike so they are merely there to collect money and get the pump going. | ||

at the local fill-er -up i've had N.J. drivers(from the interstate) ask me if i'd pump their gas!(self-service) so i politely "walk" them through the procedure. WEIRD ! | ||

I think I would have started it back up, given it a couple throttle twists ( I do have a Drummer) then turned it back off. Then I could have said "That was on, this is off - notice the difference?" | ||

LMAO @ this one...I like all the answer and I would agree I would crack mine back up and rev it up and say the same.... I cant imagine not filling my own car up... I wouldnt want anyone else doing the car or my bike...I dont like the gas on the paint! or scratching the side with the gas cap hanging and slappin the nozzel around!!! NO WAY HOE~SAY!!!! | ||

I was a pump jockey in Connecticut as a youth. It was a good high school job. It's just another example of companies outsourcing labor to increase their bottom line. Sorry, wrong thread. I know for one, I wouldn't mind sitting in my car waiting on a cold rainy day while some kid puts the gas in. I used to wash the windows and offer to check the fluids under the hood too. All that for the price of a tank of gas. People have forgotten what customer service was and now they are happy to pump their own gas. They used to save 3 cents a gallon or so going to a self serve as opposed to full service station. Cheap bastards. For what it's worth, any station worth a sh!t would just hand the nozzle to a Scoot Jockey. | ||

I had someone going for a while when they asked what the noise was (fan) when I was walking away from the bike. I said it was the turbine winding down...you know...like the airliners at the airport? The guy was in a car and didn't hear the bike when I rode in...he actually got closer for a better listen and then I started it up...ironically he was on the left side of the bike and well he got an earful of DRUMMERRRRRRRRRR He had a good laugh when I explained what was going on.... | ||

Because of the rash of people driving off without paying for their gas, most gas stations here in NH make you pay first. Ya walk back to your vehicle and from inside the station they turn your pump on. Sounds like a simple solution in Oregon & NJ... but I guess some people would lose their high-paying jobs. I was a pump jockey in the 60's so I know the score. Working on an all-services base, the souped-up/custom cars were beautiful... especially to a teenager. |
