If you are actually going to race, a one piece suit that fits very snugly, preferably made to measure, is the ideal thing, and required by many racing groups.

The reason is that, if you take a high speed spill, you don't want the suit to come apart at the waist.

However, if you are like me, and you only do the occasional track day, but like to wear good protection on the street as well, a good two piece suit is a lot more useful as you can wear just the jacket, or mix different tops and bottoms depending on conditions.

Make sure that you have zipper that goes all the way around the waist for track days and racing, and note that jackets and pants from different manufacturers usually do not fit together, although they can usually be made to fit by changing the zipper on one or the other sides.

Racing: 1-piece

Street and track day: 2-piece with full zip. You can still wear the leather jacket for some style points. Take it off when eating that 100-mile hamburger. 1-piece on the street are a pain at the coffeeshop/restaurant.

thanx for the info, guys.

spent leather money on go-fast parts (read "micron exhaust"), so leather fell by the wayside for now.

guess my cruisin' leathers will have to do for now... : )

Wacky but effective alternative:
http://www.motoport.com/index.asp

Look for the GP-1 and GP-2 race suit/combo made of stretch Kevlar. "Cycleport's Kevlar suits are the only synthetic apparel approved by the F.I.M., the A.M.A., the W.E.R.A. and many other racing organizations."

Bought myself a 2nd-hand Cycleport/Motoport/Difi GP-2 jacket, mostly out of curiosity, liked the stuff so much I bought GP-2 pants for trackdays, and then a GP-1 suit off eBay for my wife.

GP-1 for wife was too big (much better politically than too small!), so the suit's hangin' around in the closet. If the size is right and you don't mind looking like you're wearing red longjohns, then you can have the suit for what I paid ($250), in great condition + all armor.

If you ride in hot, humid conditions, then you won't believe how comfortable and lightweight this stuff is! I ride in the GP Kevlar instead of typical mesh gear in the high desert (100F but dry).

Check reviews, look for racer comments:

PM if interested.

Yay, old thread revival. Anyway, I am in a 1 piece now. Had a nasty wreck a year ago, and my 2 piece suit wasn't zippered together, it pulled up a little bit and got some light rash on my lower back. Nothing major, but it sure as hell hurts : )
