lost belt #1 lastnite @ 22000km. going hard across a washboard [wheel trax], hit second gear @ around 5000 rpms, i think the rear wheel was in the air at the time. when it hit the road the belt sheared really nice. dumb question, has anyone noted extra flex in the swingarm after going to the dunlop 207's [original isolators, still look good but i really can feel the swingarm flex when i crank on it hard]. are the new rear isolators stiffer? thanx |

Sorry dude, can't happen, Court said so In all seriousness, I have not noticed the new isolators being stiffer. They are reputidly different material that is stiffer. It seems to me it's actually softer, but that has no basis in scientific testing. Anybody got a rubber durometer? bighairyralph |

hey all . . . after more than 2 and 1/2 months, my bike is finally back on the road. Belt broke and I got a slow start tracking down the parts for the chain conversion. Ralph and Jmartz...you guys were a great help whether you knew it, or not...I learned a great deal from reading your posts...Thanks very much. After everything passes the thrash test, if I'm satisfied and still proud of my work, I'll post pictures.

Need for advice : I plan to replace soon my european 29 teeth front pulley with the american 27 teeth one. On bikes equipped with a chain, I used to do as follows : keep the rear wheel and chain in place, press hard the rear brake and use the chain as a "tool" avoiding the pulley from turning. Then screwing and unscrewing the central pulley screw was an easy job. Can I do the same with the Buell belt ??? Or is there a risk of breakage or damage ? Of course I don't have the special Harley tool for that purpose, nor do I have access to one easily... I could also try to push a big piece of tissue between the pulley and the engine case but this will provide far less friction than with a chain sprocket...Thanks in advance for your comments. |

Ha Jerome, stop worrying: Each of those twelve strands in the belt can lift a VW from the ground. Do you think that you can put such force on your wrench that you can lift the frontwheel from the floor (what happens when people make wheelies)? Belts can break when forced to bend sharply backwards and if they are too tight: If the shock/spring doesn`t limit the movement of the swingarm but the belt. And I believe it was Blake who came with numbers of a force around 60 000 lbs in such situation. The chain does not break that fast at the end of its limits because it stretches after first pressing all the grease from between the rollers. The belt doesn`t stretch as much. You have only one problem: Will the brake be strong enough to hold the wheel? Good luck. Hans. |

Jerome --- you've got the right idea. Put the bike in 5th; and get a friend to help hold the bike and the brake while you "zip" the nut off with an air impact . . . remember --- the nut is left-hand thread. |

Hans and Chuck : thanks for your input. Sounds much reasonable. Yes, I'll use an air impact and I'll remember that it's a left-hand thread... The actual problem is just to get a 1-7/8" wrench here in France but I'll get one soon from a local supplier. |

I found out why my S3T doesn't throttle wheelie. When I changed the (rear) tire. I counted (3 times) the teeth on the wheel pulley - 61. The tach reads 3700 @ 80 mph. A little math and presto! trans pulley = 29. My service manual says it has a 27 tooth pulley - has anyone else had odd combos from the factory or is this a single "Made on Monday"? BTW - Baker Drivetrain sells a Titanium 26 tooth pulley ($172 - usual disclaimers from me) http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/sportstersixspeed.asp Oz |

Titanium?
Quote:Our 26 tooth front transmission pulley is made from a solid chunk of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy and gives a reduction in rotating inertia. Installation of this pulley gives an instant 4% increase in torque to the rear wheel by increasing your secondary drive ratio number. Install one of these pulleys with our XL6 to significantly increase the performance of your Sportster/Buell. Fits 91-up XL Motors

D'OH ... CORRECTION: I have been at that site MANY times (drooling on the six speed) I looked AGAIN - it says T6 aluminum - which my eyes, blurry from reading all the back posts on BWB Web, turned into TITANIUM. I thought it should have cost more for a chunk of Ti. Oz really feeling like I can PROVE i'm an idiot |

Considering previous discussions here about stripping the splines out of the stock ones, I can't imagine how aluminum could be a good idea. |

Oz, Are you sure your S3 has a 29 tooth front pulley or are you just thinking it does because of the tach reading? It's very easy to check if you really do have a 29 tooth. Just pull of the front pulley cover and visually look at the pulley. There will be either a 27 or 29 number stamped on it close to the inner splines. This number tells you what it is. |
