With all the talk of a factory Buell Race team is there a likely comparison with the Brits? Does Triumph field a factory effort in a home series?

I'm not looking to stir the pot here just attempting a little exercise in fantasy. It would be fascinating to see Buell's contending for titles in the AMA.

I know we have an excellent reputation in the CCS, ASRA, etc. I'd be satisfied knowing something like... "Buell will be fielding a Factory Race Effort in the AMA in the next ???? years."

Other than a brief and quite succesful flirtation in racing with V&M (TT win and a British Supersport win) with the 600 a couple of years ago, and the Triumph Thruxton Cup (organised by the US distributor and not the factory) the Triumph factory have never been directly involved in racing really, and have publicly stated that racing is not where they want to concentrate any effort.

Having said that, with the advent of the 675 they have now got a lot closer to 'proper' involvement in the sport, and have unofficially given Paul Young some support in British Supersport last year.

2007 sees the launch of the '675 Triple Challenge' race series in the UK, which is attracting some very good young riders already. This is organised by T3 (an independant aftermarket tuning firm) and the factory has no conection other than in supplying discounted bikes for competitors. Also running as part of 'series within a series' is the 'Michelin Young Guns' championship for riders aged between 16 & 24.
This is a one make series run at top British club level with strictly enforced sensible tuning limits to ensure a level playing field for everyone, and should prove to be pretty exciting with some good close racing.

Although the Triumph factory are again not directly involved it will undoubtedly be a good PR opportunity for them.

There are also a few guys running 675's in ASRA/CCS. Mike Himmelsbach of Martin-Moto is racing one and getting some good results too I believe.

Thanks Matt, It seems Triumph have a sense of clarity for their racing ambitions. Buell do as well considering the "contingency monies." Is there a strong desire of the fans to see Triumph racing the 675 in the top series'? It seems the racing fans on this side of the pond and on this site want to see Buell in AMA F/X. I guess having to deal with the HD "chrome experience" leaves us wanting a bit of those dollars for a racing effort. Hopefully it's in our future and not too far at that. NUTS

Unlike Buell, Triumph have always made it pretty clear that they will not get involved in Superbike racing at the top level, so the demand from fans isn't really there over here.

The 675 may of course change that, although the factory are still very careful to distance themselves from all the teams, even Paul Young's Supersport team (and he is a Triumph test and development rider). At the moment the bike is popular and competitive enough in the hands of privateer racers to give Triumph some glory without any direct expense, which is pretty shrewd.

Triumph have apparently resurrected their 200+mph Hypersports concept bike from a few years ago, but I can't see them getting into Superbike racing with direct factory involvement.

Totally off subject Trojan, but when is Triumph going to come out with a new Daytona with the 1050cc powerplant they use in the Speed Triple and Sprint? I'd really like to see that bike.

I'm sure they will use the 1050 engine in all of the 3 cylinder models from now on, although I haven't heard any rumours about a new 1050 Daytona (yet).
There have been some spy photographs shown of what looks like a 'mini' Speed Triple using the 675 engine, and the rumours have resurfaced about the 'mothballed' 180bhp hypersport bike that could be the new Daytona, but I think that will use a 4 cylinder engine. It was first seen testing back in 2003 but then cancelled.
