Well, I'll tell ya. If you re read this post from the top, it still stands. This is a group of about 98% marines. There's one guy from the air station there. He rides either his CBR or RC51. There's no rank spoken of at these things. It's usually pretty fast here and there, but lately it's been pretty tame. The guy who usually leads them is my neighbor here on base. However, he's goin under the knife to get hi neck fixed in about a week or so and will be out of riding comission for bout a month. So, the pace will be either really slow or really fast. I'm one of the Buells, the other is a grunt but he went to Iraq recently. There's one other, Im not sure of his name. He's pretty new at the buell thing I think because I saw him at back roads getting his tyre changed. He's got a red firebolt. (No it wasn't Dave Lassiter, I know he's gone.) This was another guy, but by the time I got back to Back roads I passed him as he was leaving. Had a few beers the guys there and they said that he was a bew owner who didn't know how to change his tyre. No biggy. It is kind of a pain on these bikes. However, I'm still looking for that guy. Keep your eyes open, though. There's been a few Buells on base lately. And in this weather, I assume they're die harders, cause the wind around this base sometimes is friggin brutal, as Im sure you know on the air station. I won't be ridin Saturday, but I hope to get out there on Sunday. Either way, if I don't it's still an open invite. It's not a club or anything. This is just a bunch of guys who have been meeting for about 4 years now, every sunday at 9 at bojangles. Just look for the really tall guy (Mike) he's gonna be the older guy on a old bike, introduce yourself and tell him you're new and wanna ride. Mike's passionate about riding. He used to race back in the day. I've learned a lot from him. He's a wealth of knowledge. Anyway, im getting off target, here. It's a group of anywhere from 4 - 17 people that show up. Some 2 up. We go on some great roads that you would never even imagine out here. Make old maple hill look boring. Haws branch, pleasant hill, merrill brown, fire tower, 111, 58, 53's side roads. Picture a ride starting from Jville to Maple hill, Trenton, Kinston, New Bern, Down Piney green, back to bojangles. Not in one line, but in sweeps. Usually round 1-2 gas stops. Anyway, Like I said, it's open. There's a group on base called "Rated R". Bunch of douche bags. Lame. We usually find them up ahead of us and soon being passed. Can't miss em. They're the ones hanging out at the "squid mart". That's the gas station at western and Lejeune. If it's just buells you're looking to ride with, you're gonna be pretty hard pressed, around here. There's me! I love to ride. I got about another good ride in me till I have to get my tyres replaced. Waitin for Santa to bring me new Stradas. Anyway, hollar at ya later. Mark |

Sub65Chris - I guess you didn't take me up on riding the City Hero across country for you. You are a smart man. I really hope to do one of these Jacksonville rides one day. I know it will not be this weekend as I am taking some courses and projects and finals are due. Maybe next weekend as I free up and the weather hopefully warms up, we can get together and ride. Please look around at planned events for 2007. It starts with a cage ride to Washington DC for the International Motorcycle Show and continues to Daytona, March Badness and talking about an experienced riders course. During the warmer months we usually do a couple of coastal rides. There are some roads around Oriental that are a hoot. Either way, welcome back and hope to ride with you guys in Jacksonville real soon. Also, remember what Mark said about Tall Mike. The Flying Monkey as some call him, he is a great guy and very knowledgeable. |

Not me. I'm waiting for my Strada. I'm about at the cord. Strada should be here Monday. Looks like Jan. for a sun. ride for me as of now. But, I will post if I do a Saturday to Edenton. I really want to make that happen There's gotta be more than just Carlos interested in that. I would like to start out of New Bern. Mabye get 1313 in on that one? By the way, I went to New Bern last weekend and tried to go to the pepsi joint and was locked out on account of some kids Birthday party. Little bummed.. Hey, I like New Bern, by the way. Lotta german in our families. Cool town. I hit Kinston up recently. That's a nice place too. Makes me wish we could live up that way. But look, I mean it on the Edenton run, though. I had a thought about looping from New Bern to Edenton heading West near Raliegh the long way or Heading East and take the ferry's back. Either one would be a bitchin day Let me know if you got any ideas on this. Mark |

I am sure when we get closer to doing such a ride, more will jump in. Rubberdown, Zxxer, and myself did a similar ride. Webe wants to head more toward Kerr Lake area. He says the roads up there are a blast and that was where he grew up. As for this weekend, Webe wants to burn some break in miles and I have not been able to ride in two weeks, which for me is very unusual. Stress with work and school, plus a trip to see the folks in Cincinnati after Christmas means this weekend is it until January. It looks like Sunday is going to be my riding day, so south to Jacksonville to check out the troops. I hope Mike is there, I have not talked to him in a long time. |

There will be a guy out there as tall as Mike named Larry. He's one of the regulars and a excellent rider and a good friend of mine and my neighbors (he's an Osprey pilot) but he's a friggin tall dude, on a CBR 1000 RR, and he is basically the next great alternative to Mike. Mike wasn't there last weekend. But, I am going to talk to my neighbor and email mike and let him know that you plan on being there, Carlos. So, hopefullly, after we let him know, then maybe he will show up. If he doesn't, look for Larry, tell him you know me, and blah, blah, blah. He's a good guy and will show ya some good roads. They usually meet up at 9 am go inside for a bite sometimes and then it's on till round 2 sometimes. But, it's all riding. Couple gas stops here and there. I REALLY want to get out there this weekend. But, like I said, I'm damn near at the cord. I just wouldn't wanna push it. Tyre will be here Monday. If I can swing it, I might see what my neighbors got layin around for a rear tyre. Who knows. I'll keep ya posted Carlos. Mark |

If you think you can have the tire mounted tomorrow, I have a new Strada in the Barn. It was the replacement for the one that got cut/split on me new earlier in the year. Though I just bought a tire, I decided to stay with the Contis so the Strada is still out there if you want to trade it for the one coming in later. If you do, call me in the AM. 252-524-4430 and we can meet half way or something. |

I have a Company Christmas Party to go to today. Actually, it's a get together at about 1100 for a guy that got promoted yesterday, and on top of that.... Is the Christmas Party for my wife's work. I apprecieate it though. I really do, Carlos. Any other time, and I would be all over that. I wish I would have known about your Strada earlier. I would have paid you for it, had you been looking to get rid of it. I may just leave my rim outside my neighbors house and see if some magic elves hook me up by the time I get home. The elves are nice out here. On a side note, are you looking to get rid of that tyre or keep it? I'll keep ya posted, Carlos. I may be able to pull something off. Mark |

The reason I ask, is because it's always nice to have a spare sittin around for days just like this. How do you like the Conti's by the way, I know you said you're sticking with them, but do you seem to get a little better mileage out of them, and how do they handle in the cold. Do they seem to warm up well? Mark |

Not looking to get rid of the tire, just swap one strada for the other once yours comes it. Can't ride Sunday on a Monday tire! We'll be home all day and night. Just give me a call and we'll go from there. (Message edited by M2nc on December 16, 2006) |

I like the contis. Their profile is flatter which means they are more neutral on center. Most people on most other bikes would not like that, but to me the Uly with the Buell Geometry and the big handle bar is a little to reactive for high speed stability. The stradas wore better, much better than the Contis, but that is because the shop put on the wrong rear last time and put on a Sport Attack on the rear instead of a Road Attack. I did not notice it until I had too many miles to take it back. The rear lasted a dismal 2600 miles. I am running a ContiForce set now which is more of a sport touring tire than the Road Attarck or Sport Attack. We will see what I get out of them. I got 5000 miles on the Strada rear before I got a hole in the rear and they were just about to the wear bar. I estimate that the tire had about another 500-750 miles left (to the cords). That matches the D205 I run on the M2. The front is still useable but its flat spotted and that makes for odd handling at turn in. So I have a full set as spares because I still have the Strada front with 5500 miles. I believe the D205 front tire is better though. They have never flat spotted on me. Also I found the Stradas followed grooves in the pavement much like the old K505 Bi-Ply tires I had on my old CB750. That irritated me so that is why I have gone on with my search for the perfect motorcycle tire. I still want to off-road the Uly so I want to check out the Sync & MT-60 Pirellis and see how they do in the future. After reading riding reports on the MT-60 it appears they have that high speed wobble the D616 have after some wear. I am coming to the conclusion that the more off-road oriented the tires are, the more wobble you should expect no matter the bike. Guys on KLRs are saying the same thing. So I may go back to the D616s one day. They did stick pretty well in dry conditions, were so far the best wet condition tires I have had on any bike and were very good in grass, mud and hard pack gravel. They were okay in the sand but that is where I would like to see how the MT-60s do. |

Well, I've been wanting to try the Continentals. I used to use Metzlers M1's on my MZ and man, I wore through those in a bout 1100 miles. Too soft. I used to use 220's on the Duc, but soon changed to 207's and then I went to the pilot powers and on to pilot roads . I loved the roads. Man, those were like getting the perfomance of a power but the longevity of a Strada. I have so far been really pleased with the pilot powers and roads in my past. I am actually looking to try a different set even next time to, as you say, find "the perfect motorcycle tire." But, I felt that I should give the Stradas a go. I loved the Qualifiers, but man, I ate through those as well and flat spottd the worse out of any tire. And any one that knows me and how I ride, I seldom ride in a straight line (sober) so I was just disgusted. However, they stuck like glue and warmed up in probably 6 miles. Unreal. A great Track Day tire. But a horrible road tire, if you don't mind getting 1000-1500 miles and changing over. I just could not stand the 208's. Junk. Anyway, thanks for your view on the Conti's. I want to try the force and force max on those as well as the road attacks for longevity. Later, skater Mark |

Hey Mark, Do think that anyone will be riding tomorrow? I finally received my tags in the mail this week for the 12Ss after three months! I need to have the bike inspected today so that I am all legal. I live in Hampstead now and the forecast says that it is going to be raining in the morning down here on Sunday. But it's not going to be raining in Jacksonville. Dave |

You guys moved again? I bet the US Mail is getting tired of tracking you. I hate that we did not post the ride. We were withing 20 miles of your house and I even thought about turning right and staying NC-50 toward Top Sail, but we instead stayed on Haws Run Rd and headed to Jacksonville. We were not sure where we were going to go until 11am yesterday morning. WE rode down NC-50 from Chinquapin, to Old Maple Hill Rd, to the Fish Camp. From there we did a short loop another rider at the Fish Camp told us about, then went back to Old Maple Hill Rd. We turned right on NC-50 and rode straight on Haws Run rd. to Jacksonville. We stopped at New River HD were I bought a pair of Buell Riding Boots for 50% off. We rode back to Kinston and split off from there. Next time we head that way, I will try to post here. |

Yeah, it rained up here, but quit later in the Morning. I went riding later. Took a ride up north east. Did a stop in Morehead City and scouted out a few more roads for the Edenton Trip I wanna get goin on here. Hey Cyclone, you still work up here? If so, let me know. Carlos, what do you think fo the Boots? I think I'm gonna head over there and pick up a pair. Carlos, you sound like you took some of the roads Mike and I take usually. I'm surprised you didn't see Mike on Sunday. Rumor is, he was on those very roads (Haws and maple hill) You'll have to check out warehouser and the ride to Buellaville from Jacksonville that Mike took me on is great. Couple of tricky little decreasing radius turns, but overall, a great ride. I just got my bike back from Harley so, I should be out riding around on Sunday. May be cold, but so what. Thinkin about headin Brankin's way and goin a bit further up past New Bern on the way up to but not quite to Edenton. I really wanna get more familiar with those roads. I ride so much around these areas that I'm kinda getting bored of it. Well, okay, bored is not an accurate decision. But, I am just trying to find more roads. Hard to believe I've only lived here 6 months. Anyway, I'll keep ya posted as the week progresses. Later, fellas Mark |

I understand Mark. Yeah we took some of the roads that Mike took me on, but just a few. Old Maple Hill is just awesome. I love that road, then there was the road down past the fish camp and to the right that takes you to US-117. We then looped around and headed back to Old Maple Hill road and to Jacksonville. Its getting to be a favorite run of ours during the winter. It's about one hour there, then an hour riding around, eat at the fish camp and head home the long way. There are several good roads from Kinston to Richlands, then take the roads back by the airport to Haws Run, then to Old Maple Hill and back. A great three to four hour ride. Mark there is also US-70 & NC-12 heading to the Swan Quarter Ferry which is fun, and NC-101 (I think) heading to the Minnosott Ferry that is kind fun, with a lot more fun roads around Oriental. Any time you want a tour let me know. I know those roads pretty well. As for the boot I was surprised how comfortable they are. These are my first "REAL" riding boots. I usually wear steal toed work boots that are water proof. I really like them so far but I have seen other riding boots with more protection. For $73 and some change I couldn't pass them up. |

Hey Dave.. You ought to stop by some time. Twice now, I thought I saw you and tried to wave you down. Either it wasn't you or I forgot what you look like. Either way. You are more than welcome to stop by. Like I said, I'm on Georgia St. Can't miss me, I'm the only Yellow Buell in a 45 mile radius. Anyhow, look, I'm looking at going riding on Saturday, if anyone is up. Not sure where I would like to go. I was thinking about making a semi day out of it and heading up north. I would like to find an interesting way to get to Goldsboro. Last time I went there, I super slabbed it. Plus, I'm trying to get some good roads in the memory bank. Mike Morley and a some of us are going to be doing a ride to Chapel Hill sometime soon for a bike rallya and some stops along the way. I guess he's been doing this run for YEARS. Back in the MadMotoMike days and Back Roads Triumph. Anyhow, i have been officially invited and don't want to look like a total newbie. Plus, it gives me an excuse to ride. Let me know what you guys think. Took a great ride to Rose Hill recently. That was a great ride from Jacksonville. Ended up at the Duplin Winery. Nice place. Later Mark |
