Okay, I have been looking at a few other conversations about the 07 airbox. Here's my question that I don't see an answer to, yet, Does it really help you out, any? Is it worth it? I have an 05 XB9R, with a Buell Race Kit, with the snorkel out and my stock inner box cover. Is getting the 07 gonna really make a difference? Has it made a difference for anyone else, that they can notice? If so, what was noticeable about it? Thanks Mark |

Are you talking about the outer cover or the inner airbox cover? If you are talking about the outer cover without removing the inner airbox cover it will not do anything. If you are talking about the inner cover it will help, but I don't think I would spend the money for it. You can buy the airbox eliminator kit from American Sport Bike for about $60 I think. |

Don't you need some sort of catch can also, with that aibox eliminator kit? OR am i thinking of something else? |

I am also thinking about changing the inner airbox cover on my 06 SX. I will also install a catch can. The gain will not be much, probably wont even notice. but in theory it should run a bit smoother. and in my mind it will have gained 50HP |

I have an '06 and recently installed the 07 airbox. I could feel a slight gain in power with my assdyno. Maybe a couple of HP. Nothing huge. The intake noise is louder, not too much, which I think is cool. I recommend it if, like me, you want your bike to breath better but don't want a ton of intake noise and you really do not want to deal with installing an catch can. |

The only difference between the 06 and the 07 inner airbox is that the 07 item has slots cut in the right hand side. Just cut some holes in your 06 inner airbox and you have the same thing. Better still, get rid of the inner airbox completely |

so am i right about the catch can? If so, the catch can doesnt' seem tooo cheap to me. So that plus open airbox mod, seems like a lot of money, Could be me. |

Most people don't spring for the catch can anyway... much cheaper to rig your own (mine cost about $20 altogether). No biggie there, so don't let that stop you. =) ~SM |

This one doesn't need a catch can and retains the stock breathers http://www.britnett-carver.co.uk/trojanhorse/prods /16.html |

Sword. How'd you make your own catch can? Plus, did this mod give you any noticeable difference? I'm up for a little shadetree mechanic stuff. Mark |

Nuts, If you dig around in the Knowledge vault, you'll find several options. On mine, I bought a pack of vacuum line fittings (y'know, t-offs, right angles, that sort of thing), about 3 feet of the correct diameter hose, and a $10 mini air filter (all the major auto parts stores carry these in their import tuner section). I pulled the crankcase vent hoses out of the airbox and T'd them together, then ran a single line back behind my left footpeg. I installed a second T joint facing upward, and attached the air filter to the top. Then I continued the line on down for another 6" and capped it off. The air filter allows the pressure to equalize, and the muck that gets blown out of the crank case collects in the bottom 6" of the tube to be drained at intervals. With this setup (which I nabbed from someone else here on the Badweb), I DO get a little bit of oily overspray through the filter, but I should be able to remedy that with a little extra hose... the filter's a bit too close to the main line at the moment, but it hasn't been a big enough deal for me to tackle just yet. You'll have to plug the 2 holes left from moving the hoses (unless that's addressed with the open airbox conversion... I don't have one, so I wouldn't know). I didn't do this mod for any extra performance, but because my bike was running like crap. My crankcase was spitting enough junk out that it was interfering with the air/fuel ratio, making it skip at random. I've not had a single problem since I rerouted the hoses (though I probably don't meet emissions standards now)! Hope that helps! ~SM |

The 07 box, per Buell, has 24 sq in of additional material removed. The slots on the right side are blocked off so as to reduce the scavenging of hot air from the header side (I don't know how much of a difference that makes). You can cut holes in your box, but because the 07 is made of harder plastic, your stock box will be weaker as you approach the same sq in of open space. The 07 costs $35 which to me isn't worth spending time poking holes. Plus if you don't like it, you could always ebay the 07 box to get most of your money back. I think it's worth it. Butt dyno says that accelleration is enhanced. Intake noise is more, but pleasant. I wouldn't do it if you haven't already sprung for the outer box. |

I think the 07 reflash is more important than the 07 air box but I do not have the dyno data to back it up. The new air box does sound faster but the old air box seems to have a better low end with the 07 reflash. |

07 reflash? What? You mean having the Stock ECM flashed as an 07? What advantages were there to the stock ECM in 07 vs. 05? Plus, are you saying that the outer airbox is different on the 07 in conjunction with the inner airbox. Only pictures I've ever seen were of the inner. Don't know if I have either paid attention to the outter or seen pictures of the outer before. Any info or pics would be great. Here's my question. What is the best thing I could do for my bike? 05 XB9R with Buell Race Kit, Removed Snorkel, Race ECM, Buell Race Filter. That's all I've done. I'm looking at either an open airbox deal if it's financially possible or just going with the 07 airbox. I mean open airbox seems to need the catch can or some mod of a catch can, right? Now, open airbox seems to need the outer airbox? Is that right? Mark |

Isn't the outer airbox with the snorkel sealed around the filler or does it have the mesh opening like mine? I was thinking that the "snorkeled" airboxes were not open at the front. |

Nutsnbolt, I might have given you incorrect information regarding the xb. The xb12x (ULy) has a new open air box with a reflash for 07 that has some minor fueling and timing changes to the ECM. When they opened the ULy's air box they added fuel to keep it balanced. If the xb is different I am sorry for my last post. |

I also have an 05 and was considering the new cover, but the intake is through the snorkle, and not though the grate above the gas cap like the 06s. so unless we cut holes in the black plastic above the gas cap I don't see any advantage to the new air box cover. I could be wrong as I have been before. But I think the 07 air box cover is for the 06s. (Message edited by johntman on February 03, 2007) |

yep, 06 & 07 outer cover is the same. It's the inner covers that are different. I would love to run an open airbox for the looks of it but I don't think my bike would like it here at sea level. Well I guess I'm actually one or two feet above sea level. I had completely removed the snorkel on my 05 when I installed the race kit but the bike was a bit underwhelmed at low rpms. I ended up cutting up the snorkel and I installed the top two inches of it back in. My bike runs much better that way so the open airbox would probably be bad for me. So depending on one's elevation, a dyno & a reprogramming of the ecm (stock or race) may be in order for such a mod. Those at high elevation shouldn't have anything to worry about since I don't think there's such a thing as too much air up there |

Just take a half inch drill bit and drill u a bunch of well placed holes in your stock box, for example dont drill holes on the part closest to the exhaust and be carefull not to drill through the webbing so you dont weaken the box too much and place as many holes as you can fit on the part closest to the air vent by your gas filler cap, think I drilled about 20 holes in all. I did this and noticed a satisifying gain in my seat of the pants dyno. I already had a spec ops pipe and drilling the holes made more of a power difference than the pipe in my opinion altho this could be due to the fact that the engine required more air due to the lack of exhasut restriction. there is more intake noise but its not annoying, sounds good to me but I would say it would be annoying if you were still running the quiet stock pipe. Btw I am still running the stock air filter and stock 06 computer tune and am very happy with the results, gotta love a free mod that actually makes a difference and no catch can required plus im sure its quieter than running no air box. So ya in my long winded .02$ I would suggest that you try this first and if for sum reason you are not happy with it you can still by the 07 box, you were going to anyway so you will not have lost anything |

I have an '04 Firebolt. I had thought of changing my intake setup a while back but have changed my mind because with my present setup, I've noticed the most smoothness and power. The only performance mods I've made is a straight pipe and K&N air filter. The airbox has been left stock so far. This is my third version of my straight pipe mod. First two resulted in a lot of noise. This present setup has given me the most power and smoothness I've seen yet. Believe it or not, it's loud but not too loud. It actually sounds like an American V8 with performance mods. Of course I've only tested using the official Butt Dyno. Go to www.bigcitythunder.com and check out what they call "power baffles". I did the same thing and the whole setup cost approx. $15 and got it all at yes, you guessed it, Auto Zone. One of the coolest things is that the ricers will not mess with me. USA Baby! |

Wow, sorry mhfirebolt but I cant help myself, I must take issue with some of the things you said... First off, if the "only performace mods" you have made so far is a straight pipe and k@n, how could you possibly know that is it the "most smoothness and power" according to your " official butt dyno" ? If you havnt tested anything else how can you be sure that it is the best? Also "one of the coolest things is that the ricers will not mess with me"... That would be cool for you I'm assuming because most all ricers accept the cruisers or 250 ninjas would smoke your ass in a straight line with your "straight pipe and k@n filter" in first gear pulling a trailer with a buell on it in any drag race. Sorry in advance to all the buell die harders on the badweb, I also chose to buy a buell over all other brands and dont regret my decision, I just cant seem to stand hearing fellow buellers suggest that the "ricers" cant or wont mess with them because all of us that are honest with ourselves know that a statement like that is laughable. I think it is safe to say that the majority of buell riders didnt choose this brand with smoking ricer ass is mind. Just a pet peeve of mine and I have been drinking a lil tonight so yeah this is how I really feel but i do agree with this much... usa baby! |
