This has been a popular topic in the past, so I decided to take a few pictures and post. Let me start out by saying that I take no credit for this whatsoever - this is Mr. Bobby Cochrane's idea. To do this you'll need the fairing, mounting bracket / stay, headlamp assy, windshield, and mirrors. Get the later style "long" stalk mirrors - the short ones are useless, unless you love admiring your shoulders. You may also need handlebars. I started out with an old pair of K + N superbike bars already installed, which are lower and flatter than stock, and fit beautifully. I don't have my stock bars anymore to check clearances. I took the first pic from the side to illustrate the "droop". I've seen pics of other tubers with 'Bolt noses that were mounted pointing straight out, and they just don't look right to me. The bottom line of the fairing follows the bottom curve on the tank.
The second pic from the front, kinda for the same reason. Note that the headlamp bezels are level and lights are pointing where they should. As an aside, the decals are still available and surprisingly cheap.
Inserted this one just cause I liked it and already had it shrunk to upload.
This the heart of the matter - the bracket and instrument panel mount, viewed from the right side. The two large bolts are passing through the existing fairing bosses on the frame. The smaller bolts are attached the the Firebolt fairing bracket. The instrument panel is fastened down with long 5/16" carriage bolts, with nuts at the panel end and fairing end. Once bolted down, I pulled the whole thing back, bending the bolts to the angle I wanted. I then covered the bolts with some plastic car harness conduit. You can't see it in the pic, but I also made a small brace that wedges in behind the top of the panel and the fairing bracket, to prevent it from shaking at idle and fatiguing the bolts. I didn't take a pic, but the left side is identical.
As viewed from top. I'm experimenting with the now empty space on the handlebar clamp for use as an ipod or GPS mount. I had to play with the location of the master cylinder and clutch perch a good bit to give the necessary clearances.
This isn't just a cosmetic mod - the windblast reduction at high speed is really, really nice. I'm 6' tall, and the air hits me just below my helmet - no buffeting. For me, not being a windsock all day makes going long distance much less tiring. |

hey Tnm2, looks good, coupla questions; was there any interference with the forks to bracket? would it be possible to leave the gauge bracket on the top tree...or would it interfere with the fairing? |

Sorry...needless to say I'm not spending much time online these days. Better late than never. The brackets do not interfere with forks. They are only a little bit wider (the width of the brackets themselves, and bolts) than the stock (S3) fairing bosses are. Length wise they only stick out from the steering head 3" or so. The fairing itself is too narrow to leave a tachometer equipped instrument pod on top of the handlebar clamp. I don't know if the speedo-only one would be small enough to swing inside the fairing. Maybe if you mounted the whole thing higher, so the pod would be down below the windshield, it would. Having it up that high might look a little weird, though. |

On the topic of adding new eyes to old frames... You wouldn't happen to know of anyone who has done this with the Lightning front end? And a list of the parts / procedures needed for that job, do ya? Thanks |

back from the dead. Can this be mounted to all tube frames, or only a specific one. I dont recall having anything to mount a bracket like yours to my S1. as far as i know the neck is smooth and has no attatch points. |

Wow, back from the dead alright. I did this almost 12 years ago. The internet never forgets. If your frame doesn't have the two fairing mount tubes welded to the neck, the setup I made won't work. They are kind of key to putting this together. |
