I find it hard to believe that Buell would build something that I CONSIDER a dirt bike. I don`t consider the ULY even close. Yep very hard to believe. steveshakeshaft said it pretty well. Good post. Hey i`m a motocrosser from way back. And dirt bikes have to be able to take abuse, Hard abuse. How about power. You gonna put a blast motor up against anything the asian or euro market has. Oh wait now your gonna tell me they have a new overhead uni cam motor. Right. How about handling and suspension. The dirt bike in the winners circle might not be the fastest (Buell) but it probably has the best suspension. What does buell know about dirt bike suspension. Its not like they have years of experience in this area. Maybe follow BMW and the HP2- Doubt it And if you think it`s hard keeping up with the comp in the 600 & 1000 cc market. Go ahead and try in the dirt market. Sorry folks the Uly is advernture TOURING. To heavy for my taste. I`ll take a KLR for the adventure part of my ride. Hey Buell How about punching out the jugs on the XBR. How hard can that be. Oh I forgot thats what i`m supposed to do. Well only if I want more power. S1Eric |

Let's not all go jumping the gun on Buell not knowing how to build a dirt bike. Let's see what they come out with and then decide. I'm thinkin KTMish? |

"Let's not all go jumping the gun on Buell not knowing how to build a dirt bike. Let's see what they come out with and then decide. I'm thinkin KTMish?" I think Buell will build an excellent dirt bike. Unfortunately I'm not into dirt bikes. I still think they could have built a hell of a SuperBike as well, but I have slowly come to the realization that it is unlikely to happen. It's just not the direction they appear to be going. |

Well, they did say a FULL range of dirt within two years. That says more than one type of dirt bike to me. They also mentioned dirt track racing (a street tracker in the works for us maybe?). They also mentioned doing Hypersports (yes, I hope it is for real. Rocket, don't get your MV yet). That name sounds a like it's far from Sportfighter or Streetfighter. |

BMC target? no thanks, Rubberdown, that thing looks like a tank. i hope they go more streamlined. no Dakar-ish boats. you would actually sludge that thing through the woods? those heads would be toast on the bony single track i ride up here not to mention the headers. i can hear them snapping off now.. . It's a double track, fire road, sand barrens blaster. Slap on the motard setup it's pretty damn capable on the twisties too. I'm racing in mid-Februrary. www.sandblastrally.com |

i didn't say it wasn't capable in the right situation or a nice bike, just that its way too BIG for what i hope Buell does with the dirty bike. good luck with the race, Rubberdown!! kick some arse Jlnance, sitting on one and having to picking one up out of a nasty, wet-rock filled single-track trail are two very different things especially when youre wasted from jammin' all day. that's my only point. too big. EDIT: that BMW is 386lbs. dry weight. oofah! (Message edited by typeone on January 30, 2007) |

Cochise....I'm crushed that you wouldn't tell me any of your "secrets"...just posting what Clown asked me to since he wasen't near the BadWeb. Besides, how's that ruining it for you when it was told at the dealer meeting? You get 0 stars for whining. I whole-heartedly apologize for 1 starring you. The way it sounded to me was Erik talked to Clown, not to the WHOLE lot of dealers there. Cochise....I'm crushed that you wouldn't tell me any of your "secrets"... Don't worry, I don't hear many secrets anyway. In closing, let me again apologize for the post. |

S1Eric, And of course no one at Buell or Harley-Davidson could possibly know anything about dirt bikes. And they couldn't possibly have had dirt bikes as their first love. I'm sure no one there could possibly have your experience... You been hangin' out with Rocket or something? |

I think dirt bikes is definitely the way to go for Buell/HD, with the popularity of Motocross the way it is, there is gold in them thar dirt piles. What took them so long? When you think about it, Harley has been playing in the dirt for a long time with flat tracking, so it is a natural progression. jimidan |

hey annony when was the last time that HD? built a dirt bike? [ uly excluded] I for one would not want to haul a uly out of seat deep mud, The Uly, big beemers or the large KTMs do not fit my deffinition of a "dirt bike" either, Proof is in the pudding, WHEN BUELL and the talented engineers build it or them then we will see, I hope that the crittics will be silenced but, the ELVES have their work cut out for them the japaneese are good in this area as are a number of european co's KTM comes to mind IMO as the gold standard To the elves Best of luck, lack of tallent or creativity will not be a problem HD and possible inexperience with dirt bikes will be Rant Off .. |

>>>And of course no one at Buell or Harley-Davidson could possibly know anything about dirt bikes. That's an inaccurate statement. One of the legendary annual "unofficial" get togethers is the Harley dirt bike outing. I think some folks might be surprised to see Bill Davidson and some of Harley's top execs skill in the dirt. In fact, my guess is that many racers, particularly dirt trackers, learnred to slide in the dirt. I recall, way back when one day in Topeka, KS watching Mike Hale, Erik Buell and Jason Pridmore mix it up in the dirt . . by the way I was riding a Harley-Davidson MX250 that day. A pretty impressive group of riders that all I could do was watch. (it was the next day that Jason went for a bicycle ride, buggered his leg and had it in a halo for the entire season) My prediction is that, like the XB frame that was patented 17 years before the public saw it, that someone just didn't wake up last week and hatch this idea. In addition, I see some things developing (unrelated to motorcycles, per se) that would support such a program. I'm not giving up my Buell racing shirt. By the way. . . the Japanese, you are absoultely correct do this VERY well. |
