I just realized that my 03 XB9S doesn't have the belt guards that attach to the swingarm. Do you run without them? I know Buell put them there for a reason, but what risks am I taking by not getting some replacements and slapping them on there? |

If you are running the 03 belts, yes I would run the guards. Pokinatcha has different belt then you. |

I have an 03 belt w/ no guards and no problems. Some friends of mine have 03s with no guards, and also have had no problems. You do run a greater risk of taking a rock and shredding your belt, but it's up to you. |

Those guards also help to keep your foot or other limbs from getting caught between the belt and pulley. I'd like to take all of mine off (front and back) and just deal with the risk. |

if you are a "gambling man " by all means leave the belt guards off. but if the roads you ride on are made of gravel -i would definately install belt guards !!(belts and gravel do not get along at all) when your setting alongside the road with a broken belt , just remember how Cool the bike looks w/o belt guards ! |

As long as you're just riding on good roads, leave them off. It looks cooler that way. I haven't had my guards on in over a year and no problems. |

FWIW I have an 06 XB12Ss Every time I come in from a ride, and I mean EVERY TIME- there is a smattering of little gravel pebbles and SH&%t on the top of my belt guard housing. How many of those eventually make it to the tooth and belt interface - who knows- but they are there- every time. GIT ER DONE! |

I removed both the belt guards from my Ss and had no problems for 6 months. After thinking about it for a while, I put the lower one back on. (carbon from American Sport Bike)I can't walk that far in my Alpinestars boots after my third knee surgery. |

Why not fir the later style belt guards as they look a lot better than the 03 guards. They don't offer as much protection but it's better than none. Norrie. |

Xb9ser - PM Sent. I was told the belt was replaced once on the bike, but I don't know if it's an upgraded belt. It sure does look nice without them... I'd rather not break a belt. I'm on decent roads, except for all of the sand\pebbles they put down for the snow this year. Sounds like a hike that I don't want to take. Thanks |

I have been running the stock belt on my '03 9R since the beginning without belt guards on all kinds of roads and have had no problems. The belt still looks almost new. Maybe I am just extremely lucky. If that's the case, I'm going to ride it out. The bikes look much better without them. |

If I had an 03 I'd probably leave them on because the belt is not as durable as the 04 & the 06+. If I had an 06 or later I'd probably remove them because i don't like how they look. On the 04 & 05 models (I have an 05) I don't mind them. They don't look hideous to me so I've kept them. |
