Does anyone know if this bike was discussed here? I happened to be looking at the new Yamaha's when I found the link to this model (2005). What do you guys think of this? Looks beautiful - I like it!
A quote from the article: "The MT-01 is extremely austere, reminding us of a Buell in some ways by combining a cruiser-style motor in a lightweight, minimalist frame." Here's the link: http://www.motorcycledaily.com/yammt.html |

Could it be the long awaited V-Max replacement? |

That has been discussed. It is a really cool bike to say the least, but it is extremely heavy. Even with more power than the Buells it won't handle as well because of the extra weight and the center of gravity is much taller. |

I rode that thing at a Yamaha demo last summer; the engine is great--far more low-end than my 9 (and a 5500 or so redline), but I was quite glad to get back on my Buell after the demo. As for handling, I really can't say (the demo organizers, in their wisdom, ignored the plethora of good roads near the dealership and instead ran the demo down the 'slab)--but I doubt it'd be all that impressive. It didn't have that "composed" feel... Plus, it's a bit fugly IMO, even though compromises were made for appearance (eg. a steel backbone frame is used so the gigantic V-twin isn't obstructed by one of those pesky perimeter frames). Here's a pic I took a year ago, at the Vancouver Bike Show:

That pic looks like a proto-type. My cousin has one great bike but dosen't compare to a buell! I'd still own one |

some specs. http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/yamaha_mt-01_2005 .php 240.0 kg (529.1 pounds) that'd take some stopping even with R1 front brakes |

I get the opposite affect from what the reviewer had. The more I look at it, the uglier it gets. At first it seems bold, but upon close examination the pieces don't seem to fit design wise. It looks like a stand for and engine. Different strokes for different folks...but I'll still favor the xbs with the beloved no hassle belt drive. |

I rode one as well and it felt quite heavy and big and really thumped awkwardly at low rpms. I really liked getting back on my XB9!! |

Not a steel frame its die cast alloy then bolted together. You're probably right; still, not the bike our Buells are, IMO. |

Looks like it's nicer to ride in the winter then my XB. I bet that seat hits 150 deg. Top picture looks bada$$, obviously a concept pic. Notice the seat, engine, headers, swing arm and front brake are quite different then in the second pic. Plus no chain guards. Concept bikes alway look greater then the real thing. (And in the top pic you can't see that atrocious conglomerated headlight.) |

I don't want my ass that close to a hot muffler! It looks seriously cumbersome, despite the lack of bodywork. The second pic (production model) looks like it's freakin' homemade... bits and pieces of junk everywhere. They'd have to pay ME to take that thing home. Top pic looks like Cy-kill from the Go-bots. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on January 23, 2007) |

MT-01 - Feel the beat of the drum The MT-01 offers alternative Torque Sports performance. It combines a monumental 1,670 cc V-twin producing shuddering low-down torque with a cutting-edge sports chassis for an enthralling mix of arm-wrenching power and sports bike handling that works so well, you’ll wonder why no one has done it before. MT-01 – ride it and be amazed. http://www.yamaha-motor-europe.com/products/motorc ycles/sport_roadster/MT_01.jsp u just gotta wonder if the buell guys get pissed off when they see stuff like this or if they just take it in stride that now everybody is copying some part of their design... ie suzuki with their new innovative under the bike exhuast and so on. well competition is a good thing it breeds great things.....soon we will see something great..... |

I've seen that bike (even though Yamaha doesn't sell it in the States, Mike Corbin managed to get one). It's HUGE, definitely NOT in the same category as Buell. On the other hand, it looks like a helluva lot of fun! |

It's a pig of a bike, as is the B-King as well. They're good for the super slab and such. Maybe if I lived in Florida, or some other flat straight landscape, I'd have one, but for where I live and the roads I ride, I'll stick with the little XB. |

wow, what a change. I like the first picture, but the one in person makes the bike look like a yardsale on wheels. Could this be the reason the ad pic only shows the arse end? |

I agree, the prototype looks beautiful, but the final product sucks! Wonder what happened ...

Wonder what happened ... First they have to make it functional. Once that's done, they have to make it pass all the EPA tests, then viola! |

My mate has the MT-01, Ive ridden it a bit back to back against my XB. The engine is superb, very strong acceleration, feels like a big hand is pushing you forward, similar feel to the Suzuki M109R. Brakes are also very good, the overall weight isnt the problem its that too much is up high so it feels heavier than it is. The M109R is much heavier but feels half the weight as its all down low and central. The MT-01 does handle surprisingly well. It just takes little more effort to make it drop into corners. Its slower on change of direction due to the weight distribution - thats slow compared to a XB - not to other nakeds which are about same. Plenty of ground clearance and on all but the most tight corners its a formidable back roads bike in the right hands. Suits a bigger guy and is very comfortable. The exhausts are very well insulated and dont give any heat problems. I know the local Yamaha dealer says the biggest issue is just getting people to test ride one as they form an opinion too quickly but he usually always has a sale from a test ride as people are taken with how much fun the bike is. And I agree it is a fun bike - its the only other bike I have considered seriously besides my XB - I just am not taken by the styling. |
