LIL BLACKIE IN THE JAVITS CENTER Well that was quite an adventure. My friend Julie, ( Ducati Monster SR4), and I spent about a day detailing the bike in her new warm shop. The good news: it has never been so clean. The Bad news: It's so clean I am not sure I will ever ride it again :-) Getting the bike inside the show was quite an adventure for a civilian like me who had never done it before. Get there around 5PM. Sign in. Surly help. No estimate of time to unload. Sign warning that bribes are illegal, is not encouraging. Finally after waiting around in a shack for endless hours, while the staff play video games on the computers, the boss arrives. Helpfully, I suggest that instead of getting in the endless truck line, I just drive the motorcycle up the ramp and into the show. Incredibly enough, they agreed. Amazed security guards shout as Lil Blackie disappears up the ramp to the beat of " A Different Drummer". Thus another singular honor for Lil Blackie: the only motorcycle in the Motorcycle show to arrive under its own steam. More later. (Message edited by gentleman_jon on January 19, 2007) |

LIL BLACKIE ON DISPLAY. Blackie was just a bit out of her element, surrounded primarily by chromed out Afro-Hondasukizaki's, but one or two Bad Webbers and other Buell enthusiasts dropped by and seemed to appreciate her. Other highlights of the show for me were the enlarged Buell stand which always seemed full of visitors, the Ducati stand which had some nice new models but was much too cramped, and the MV Agusta stand that featured the new MV's, a cafe, some historic MV 4's and vintage video footage of Surtees, Agostini and Hailwood. My favorite bike: the new Cagviga Mita 500, a 500cc single sport bike, with a claimed weight of 295 lb.s, was also shown at the MV stand. I will be back at the show to pick the bike up around 4 to pick the bike up, and I hope to see more Bad Webbers. |

G-Jon - It was nice to meet you. We really liked your bike. The dime a dozen bling bikes you were competing against were just blah! Unless you are a Buell enthusiast it is difficult to know how much work actually went into your bike. The old Kawi Z1000 next to you was pretty cool too. |

Hi Jon, you're a credit to the web site and Buell enthusiasts in general. Your bike looks great. I saw some info on the Cagiva Mito 500. It looks like a beauty. I didn't realize it is a 4 stroke! That gives us a glimmer of hope that a few could make it here to the states. I don't know if it would be a big sales hit in the land of 'bigger is better', but I know I would be seriously interested in one... Hope you have a fun time at the show. |

seeing "one of our own" in the show was cool! to hear it was the only bike to arrive under it's own power just seems to fit the whole buell "real bike" thing! one thing of note, i thought i'd heard of most of the patch carrying mc's but it seems as though an explosion of bike clubs has happened in the ny metro area. never seen so many vests (some designed to look like the bullet proof variety, ??) with 3 piece patches. almost seems to be a required costume in ny?? these were not the ha type of club but more of the social stunter/hangout crowd. it seems that all of those "extreme" video's have made their cultural mark. |

hey fire, that mito was seriously cool. would be on the short list if they make it(that was the prototype). not sure too many american spec sheet droolers would go for it though. |

Mike - Sorry I missed you at the show. Don't worry, Lil Blackie is not actively for sale. When I talked with the guy who was "organizing" the show, he said he would list all the mod.s and then he encouraged me to put a price on it. As it turned out, the fellow never showed up in New York, didn't list the mod.s and didn't put a price on it. Sort of typical for a promoter. I must say I heard that he had a personal situation that kept him out of the loop the days before the show opened. The idea was to put a price of $10,000 on it, just to make the bike seem more valuable. I didn't expect any bites at that price, even though the bike would probably cost more than $15,000 to reproduce even if you did the work yourself. I am far too clever than to add up the cost of everything I have put on the bike: I hate to see a grown man weep, especially in the mirror.

AND THE WINNER IS.................... NOT LIL BLACKIE!! Not much of a surprise there, right?
Actually the bike that won the popular vote was a very nicely put together Suzuki SV 650. It was not a chromed out Afro Hondazukizaki. That one only got second place. It is a naked streetfighter with a Ducati Swing arm, the requisite polished frame, Buell firebolt lights mounted vertically and very clever central muffler among other details. See all the entrants here, with a particularly unattractive photo of a certain Black Buell, which does not appear to have a front wheel. Still not sure why it was included. http://motorcycleshows.com/motorcycleshows/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=399742 |
