Howdy, I am planning to ride our 2001 S3 from Austin, TX to NC. My wife will be a passenger, our destination is her parents house in Grassy Creek NC. I don't have an exact route yet, but I would like to ride the best scenic routes in GA, TN and NC. How about 5 days there and 5 days back? What is the best time of year to go? How about late spring? What is a good window of time to minimize tourist traffic, yet still have a chance for good weather? Cold weather is ok, just want to minimize fog and rain. Is there a prime "early-bird" riding season there? Thank you very much! Patrice, Austin TX |

Hey Duck, check out our adventure thread for MBIV. I would head NE till you got to the Trail of Tears, or up along the Mississippi river. Head over to Suchas, GA, then up the the Dragon via the Cherohola Skyway, catch the Blue Ridge Parkway and on to your destination. Where abouts is Grass Creek NC? |

U4 - It's up on the NC/VA border north west of Winston Salem. Duck, you couldn't pick a better place for a destination. You can't find a bad road around there. Two I would definitly reccomend you hit are 58 out of Damascus, VA, and 421 through Shady Valley, TN: Take a Look |

Weather will be warm, but usually not unbearable. If you have seasonal allergies, pack your meds! Pollen season ran well into the early summer last year. Traffic will depend on what area you're in. Schools out our way (eastern NC) are out for the summer on June 9th I think. Most people will be heading for the beaches, probably not the mountains. My Dad has a place in Hillsville VA off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Maybe we can plan a day ride up that way when you're in town. Keep us posted on your travel plans and be sure to print down the RAN. The next update should be in March and then again in June. I'll try and get it done within the first week so you can have it - remind me! Kristi |

Forgot to mention, while it may be warm weather here in NC, once up in the mountains, the nights are always cool and you will need a jacket. |

Thank you Kristi, How about riding in May? Before school is out? I am trying to find the optimum time where traffic is minimal and weather is cooler but not rainy. We did hit a Black Bear with our SUV in August, in North Carolina. The car was sprayed purple with berries, and the poor bear staggered off the road. Are the bears still napping in May? PS: that's me next to the Ducati, and my twin brother. Thank you very much! Patrice

May is nice weather, but again, prime pollen season. Your bike may look yellow/greenish each morning! Most of the rain is past, but I won't promise you won't encounter some. When we have rain here, it usually is not the days of rain and gray sky. It rains, it passes and the sun comes out. May will probably be a better time regarding traffic because school is still in, but remember Memorial Day Weekend - people will be heading somewhere! As for the bears - can't speak for the mountain/piedmont region. I would think they would have already tucked themselves in for the winter! |

If you want to get here before it gets hot come in April. Of course your coming from Texas, so you'll be acustomed to the heat. |

May may be better than June. June is the beginning of Hurricane season. Though your area of the country has been hit hard lately, North Carolina has been hit thirty times in the past ten years. The Blue Ridge Parkway was washed out a couple years ago by one. Also traffic will be better in May as long as you stay away from Memorial Day. As far as for wild life, there is a plenty so you never know when you will have a close encounter with wild berries. If not bear, the deer are plentiful. Let us know when you plan on coming up. Maybe we can get together. |
