Rainman, I do not think my results are typical. I have done all my own work and I am NOT a trained mechanic. I am a pharmacist. Jprovo has the miles and experience to say with authority that most bikes will not have the same problems. Fixed correctly, most should last thousands or tens of thousands. By the way, the cool thing about this board is how easy it is to find a fix for any problem that might come up! Thank you moderators and others who contribute to making my little world bigger! |

its alive! after the biggest clusterf*** known to man, the blast is running yet again, this time with a V&H (which sounds Sweeeeeeeeeet). after rebuilding it 4 times due to blown head gaskets, 2 wrong gaskets, frozen studs, and broken head bolts, i finally got the RIGHT gaskets and bolts last night and beat my personal best rebuild time, posting a 2:15 from first bolt loosened to starting it up. got to ride for about half an hour last night before it started raining. i think someone up above is playing a cruel, mean joke on me. at least i can ride tomorrow! |

i spoke too soon, appparently. i swear i have had nothing but problems with this bike. rode it around most of the day two days ago and it started backfiring like i had a vacuum leak (i say this because i actually had a vacuum leak two months ago and it was acting the exact same way.) i took it home and decided i would work on it yesterday. got to it, and tried to start it, but it just turns over, and does not actually run. tried switchign to reserve tank thinking i might be out of gas, but it did the same thing. had to be at work soon, so i didnt get back to it until just now. went to where i had the vacuum leak before, on the hose that connects the carb and intake manifold. tightened it and slipped them closer together, but it still wouldnt start. changed the plug, checked the plug wire, and checked the fuel hose and everything was fine. had to call it a night because my battery is dead now! any ideas for tomorrow after its charged back up? Question: What is the one thing you would change on the Blast? Without thinking about it too much...Also The Bars ! Giving the question the parameters of what was the most obvious and immediate change that needed to be done (and it was done as soon as it got home from the dealer). Giving it more thought the answer would be different. IE what would be the most beneficial change to the Blast from the factory, etc.

Since I know almost every one of us has changed the exhaust, bars and intake...I'll skip those. I have to vote for the seat and it's relationship to the bars/pegs. I had to give the stock tall seat liposuction. The stock short seat does not cover the front of the tank, but the foam was better. The Corbin seat is calling to me, but $$$? Every time I bid on Ebay I get sniped. The foot pegs feel cheap. |

From the factory: 17" wheels. That would give more choices for rubber and wheels as its costly to convert a Blast to 17's. 2nd would be tank size and shape to more of a Ducati style 4 gallon sportbike tank since nothing is readily available for the Blast in a larger size. 3rd would be a trap door for the transmission. Given that pre P3/XB they all had removable transmissions, it kills me to think that almost entire motorcycle disassembly is needed to repair the trans. Most everything else on the Blast is fairly easily modified to rider preference. |

Gearheaderiko: ie: TRANSMISSION TRAP DOOR(ASSCESS DOOR ASM, transmission ... A little HISTORY for you ... In 1952 Harley-Davidson came out with the K model which did not have a TRAP DOOR ... "BUT" that changed in 1953 as the TRAP DOOR was added which continued through the MODELS K and XL and ended with the BLAST engine ... The K Model transmission has evolved todate as a VERY RELIABLE TRANSMISSION ... REMEMBER the "BLAST" came out before the "XB" ... When the "BLAST" came out the TRAP DOOR went away even in the "XL's"(Sportster) ... It is my understanding that the "R" cases can be obtained from BMC for "XB's" and the XBRR has a TRAP DOOR ... If the "BLAST" was a HOT ROAD RACING platform(or unit) "R" cases would be avaliable ... In BLASTing LaFayette |

Replace speedo and speedo sensor - the stators go bad when running hyployd gear oils in the primary - as used to be done till just a couple years ago, when it was found that sulfur in the gear oils degraded the stators wiring. Replace stator and run either Mobil 1 15/50 or HD's elixir for smoother shifting and much less stator worries. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Welcome to the Badweb Allenbassin! I am not the electrical whizz so here is my SWAG: There are two heavy wires coming out of the primary between the cylinder and starter, those go to the stator, I think you should see AC 28 volts there when the bike is running, that voltage is converted to DC 14 volts by the regulator that is located on the bottom of the seat frame area on the left side by the rear wheel. Let my roasting begin! So you had to replace a clutch? The Big Kid smoked his so bad once I had to pick him up, that was 10,000 miles ago and all I had to do was change the fluid and adjust it. Welcome Allen! I wont dispute Swampys method of testing, but I will say test it before throwing money at it. It could be either the stator, regulator or rotor (or a loose wire etc). While I doubt the rotor is bad and I dont know why the clutch went, but if the rotor magnets are shot, you'll get little charging. If for any reason something gets loose in the primary (motor sprocket nut, stator bolts or clutch parts) it can tear the magnets up. Since you've got to pull the rotor to replace the stator, make sure the magnets are intact and have a good strong magnetic pull. If the stator did indeed disintegrate from perhaps using the wrong tranny fluid (why the clutch went?), we'd love to see pictures, please. |

Allenbassin, does 231 run up through Dothan, and Ozark Alabama? I am leaving for Ozark on Thursday. Also, the stator wires rub through the little plate where they pass under the rotor. The little plate has sharp edges and with the vibrations the wires will rub throught the insulation and ground out. To do this job you will need the locking tool for the primary as that is the only way to safely get the crankshaft nut loosened and retorqued with gobs of red loctite! Remember the clutch nut is left handed. |
