i have a 2000 x-1 it has a race ecm, cams, force pipe, and forcewinder are cleaner. i had the tps, and the air fuel reset. the problem acurres after riding between 8 and 10 miles the bike starts missing won't take the throttle, spits, sputters and acts a fool.the harley/buell shop is lost. it seems like somethings getting hot and breaking down but im not sure what it maybe.please help Mark (352)615-1156 |

once the problem starts you can let it idle and it will bellow black smoke until the engine loads up and stalls |

did you check the O2 sensor? |

Pammy may be on the right track, since the problems only starts after the bike has warmed up. The bike runs in open loop until both the engine and the sensor have achieved normal operating temperature. Does it change when driving the bike in a steady state fashion vs accelerating? If you're jacking the throttle around, that will kick it out of Closed loop. Is it OK above 4500 RPM, or does it do it at all RPMs? IF all RPMs, it probably isn't the O2 sensor, but to know for sure, you could reset the AFV and just disconnect the O2 sensor altogether and see if that makes the problem not come back. But beware operating too much like this, with your combination of stuff, you probably need an AFV above 100 for normal operation. But the head temp sensor is also a very likely culprit. They can go bad and still not throw a fault code, and when they do, the engine can run pretty bad. I don't know a better way to test it than to just put a new one in. Did the shop read the AFV before they reset it? Did they tell you what it read? If it is bellowing black smoke, there is a good chance the AFV has skyrocketed. An intake seal leak can do this. The O2 sensor sees extra air, it compensates by adding more fuel. And it isn't uncommon for the leak to get worse as the engine warms up, the cylinders get taller, and tug on the manifold more than when cold. Check it by spraying stuff at the manifold/head joint once the problem starts. Cams + Force Pipe on just a Race ECM? Have you had it dyno'd at all when it wasn't acting up? Seems hard to believe you'd have very good fueling with that combination without a power commander or something. Al (Message edited by al_lighton on January 03, 2007) |

pammy and al thanks for all your help. i replaced the head temp switch and the o2 sensor. the temp sensor was the culprit along with somehow the tip sensor or angle sensor somehow cam unplugged big mystery there. not quite sure how that plug just jumped off the the sensor hmmmm. anyway put about 25 miles on the bike tonight and no problem i do believe im going to have to change the intake gaskets due to slower rpm back to idle when its hot. again thanks pammy and al lighton for your hours of help and knowledge. |

Glad you got it going, Mark. There have been an awful lot of failed head temp sensors, and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. What's to fail in those things? I don't get it. Al |
