What is the normal life of a voltage regulator ? Because mine failed after 8000 miles. Is this normal ? Could the fact that the VR is placed very close to the engine,means that it is fried when ridding around town, which in turn reduces its life? Has anyone experimented placing the VR under the seat or somewhere away from the heat of the engine? Will this make the VR any good? My old bike (Cagiva) had the VR next to a side panel, away from the engine, and after 2 years and 30000 miles I had no problem. |

I'v had my original for 6 years and just about 40k miles. It still works fine with all kinds of riding conditions. |

If the VR isn't grounded properly it could cause it to fail prematurely. Check conductivity to ground like it describes in the manual. Other causes would be a weak battery over an extended duration. I think it's a rare failure, mine's still running at 32k, and she's an all year rider. |

I have a 2002 Buell S3T which the previous owner put onto it a voltage regulator and stator I believe from an XB. The part number for said regulator is y0302-02a8. It's either 32 or 38 amp. anyway, it has stopped regulating the voltage so much... voltage output is now directly proportional to RPM... The headlights get bright as I rev the engine... I've measured output as high as 18 volts... I could go higher probably but don't want to so as to avoid frying stuff. I presume this regulator was new when installed. It therefore has less than 20k miles on it. So far there doesn't seem to be any good reason for this regulator to have failed. I wonder if maybe water got into it. The construction doesn't at all look to be hermetic. |
