Riding/w my Buell buds' two weeks ago on my '99 X1.Running great. As i made a rise in the road the bike briefly left the ground. When it came back down it crossed up and became very unsettled. It immediately died. While we were on the side of the road diagnosing we disconnected the battery. Then(and now) the bike displays these symptoms. (key/kill switch to on)The fuel pump will energize/w either the kickstand up/clutchlever in.The starter will only work with the clutchlever in.The neutral light works fine(seemingly).Once started(and in neutral) the lever can be let out and the engine continues fine.If i put the kickstand down, the bike dies immediately.Otherwise the bike runs fine. i don't wish to jumper wires permanantly. The bike is still very rideable.I think i may have damaged the tipover sensor.Pages 4-77 thru 4-80 describe testing "that" sensor.I think i can do it without the elaborate scanalizer.I have a good multimeter. One Question is,can i detect whether i've a code 44? I seem to remember a way of making the engine light blink the code(a code, if present). Help please? I may be cast in a bad light as a hater but,my opinions as what buell should make have no affect on what they have made. Assistance? |

Look for corrosion in your fusebox's diodes. I personally, jumpered my kickstand switch out years ago. The fusebox under the seat seemed to be dry all the time on mine but my contacts were all furry. A little WD40 and plugging them in and out a few times will probably fix it. |

hmmm, the tip over sensor tripped once before and wouldn't run at all till the dealer magically fixed it..at no charge. I'm not hellbent that's the cause, but will address the fuses.Diode what??? Where're those? Are they the black little boxes at the fuse block? Relays? A little service manual reading will go a long way i know...It's just the event that led to this condition that's got me baffled. And the bike Does run fine otherwise. |

You could always trade it in for a 1098. |

The thing to do (besides the Italian option) is to unplug each thing in your fusebox one at a time and clean the contacts with WD40. The two black boxes are relays. There are two diodes in there and have this symbol on the top:
MAKE SURE you don't swap the direction of the diodes when you take them out to clean them. (A diode is like a one-way switch.) |

TA-DAAAAAAAAA Thanks Nat/Oldog! I pulled apart the trunk to access the fusebox better.I read the service manual/schematic more closely and found what i thought was the tipover sensor was in fact the flasher relay(what a dolt,i shouldv've recognized the flasher relay more readily). I pulled the diodes (what the hell purpose do they serve?) and found the one related to the CLUTCHLEVER was oily and generally grimy/dirty.I cleaned/lightly sanded the prongs. Now(like normal) i can leave the kickstand down and with the gear selector in neutral and the clutchlever "out" the bike turns over and starts fine. Thanks for pointing me towards the Diode thing-a-ma-bobs. |

YAY! a win for the good guys. A coulple of years ago, mine was clickclickcliking like it had a dead battery when I tried to start it. The brain trust here pointed me to the fusebox where in my case, the relays' contacts were furry. |

Point for Nate!, them pesky corroded diode thingys, I have always wondered why the key switch carries the main current VS a heavy duty relay? |
