I checked my bolts the other day from when I changed the fluids. I checked the transmission cap bolts on my xb9sx and one of the bolts turned very easily. Much to my dismay the threads into the transmission are stripped. Now what do I do? Any suggestions? The mechanic at the Harley shop checked the bolts and said they felt good with his torque wrench. Maybe he did not check them or he stripped the bolt. Never the less if anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. tanks. I am soooo pissed. | ||

Do you mean the clutch cover or the smaller chain inspection cover? Either one can be fixed with a helicoil. I've had to do all 4 on my clutch cover. They are 1/4-20 thread bolts. A helicoil kit will cost around $25 or so. Comes with a special tap, an insertion tool and a number of thread inserts. You will need to buy a 17/64 (i think, check the package recomendation) drill bit. Quick, easy, permanent fix for the problem. Brad | ||

I mean the clutch inspection cover where I replaced the transmision fluids with the Harley Formula + . There are three bolts that keep the cover on. You take these bolts off, take the cover off and put exactly one quart of fluid in there where the gears/or clutch is. Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, first motorcycle but I am learning. tanks for your responses and where can I purchase a helicoil kit and will this work on the part that I explained? tanks | ||

Tankhead, The material where the thread stripped might not be thick enough to take and hold a Helicoil insert. Another option might be to tap the failed threaded out to take a 5/16-18 or 5/16-24 screw. If you try that and it does not work for you it will have been fast and cheap compared to trying the helicoil or replacing the primary cover. I think there are places on the Buells or maybe on other H-D models that use a similar screw in 5/16". You would have to remember that the cover has one screw that is a different size than the others of course. This might not be a good solution if you always use dealers for service. If you did that I'd tighten the screws gently and if any leaked or loosened I use a small amount of non-hardening thread sealer on just the threaded shanks of the screws. Jack | ||
