Schemky, Is the Buell muffler shown there the Daytona Boss pipe? Sure looks like it. But I think my race header muffler solution may be at that site. Looks like they do lots of custom fabrication. I bet they'd make a version of their muffler with no bent inlet pipe. If they aren't too expensive for a custom mod, I'd bet it would work well. I'll give 'em a try. Al |

Al, I have no idea, I have heard of the Daytona Boss before, but have never seen one in the flesh. Hope you get what your looking for, let me know. |

I looked at the Battle2Win write up on the Daytona Boss (Red Menace issue) last night, and they indicated that Stainless Specialties was indeed the actual fabricators of the pipe. I sketched up a pipe last night and sent it to them for a quote. Their TurboTone series looks promising, and they say customs are available. They also have a Performaster series that's just like the turbotone but with a straight thru baffle. From their site: Turbotone: Our original 100%, 304 stainless steel chambered muffler, now in a more conservative sound. Available in 3.5" or 4" body diameters. Any inlet/outlet size. Custom lengths available. Lifetime Guarantee. Images won't upload, here are the pics from that site http://www.stainless-specialties.com/turbo_tone.jpg http://www.stainless-specialties.com/buell_motorcycle_muffler.jpg |

Al, Thanks for the update. The fact that they make customs may be a good alternative for Bueller's looking for a muffler to use with the factory race header. The pipe must be pretty well made to offer a lifetime warranty. |

Al, The Buell race pipe is actually made by SuperTrapp. It's the exact same pipe except for the Buell stamped instead of SuperTrapp. The new model has been through all the Buell "shake" tests. It should be much better than the original. Also, SuperTrapp is replacing (at no charge) all the older models (whole or broken!!!). I'll be sending mine in as soon as the snow flys. Mennis |

'tis true, My old megaphone style Supertrapp was replaced free by them with the new model. It arrived in Amsterdam today. It looks much stronger and hopefuly gives more power. I have "upgraded" from the Euro 2" to the US 2-1/2" so will dyno it when I next have some free time. PPiA |

Now wait a second... I understand that the Buell SLIPFIT Muffler is made by Supertrapp, and that the only difference between the Supertrapp muffler and the Buell Slip fit muffler is the stamped in logo. (see jims pipe pictures) I HAVE one of the new supertrapps and have posted the picture here. It's quite nice, for a slipon. But it has an integrated 90 degree bend inlet pipe, and will NOT fit on the race header. The race header turns 90 to the back in the header pipes ahead of the collector. Do you have some knowledge that there is a Supertrapp redesign pipe that fits the race header? That is to say, a straight muffler that has a separate inlet pipe that is not used if mated to a race header? I can't get any information from Supertrap that supports that. And I know that the sueprtrapp slipfit does not give the performance of the race header. I could easily do 2nd gear power wheelies with the race header on, it barely does them at all with the supertrapp slip fit |

Stainless Specialties is the actual maker of the BOSS muffler. Quaint little shop they have in Sebastion. A good friend went to them to have a custom "tuned" header built for his M2 drag bike. Price was rather reasonable also. They worked with him to get the right length. It would not be a far toss that they could build a BOSS to fit a Buell race header. All that and more than likely come with a lifetime warranty. Loki |

Al, No. Mine also has the bend, but I have been led to believe from posts here that this one with the bend and the standard length headers, will be the new race kit. I could very well be wrong though. PPiA |

Well we all know that catalogs are always out of date, but I am looking at the Buell 2002 Apparel & Accessories cataolg. It shows the following: PRO-SERIES MUFFLER 65012-01Y $359.95 Slip fit muffler uses stock header. Pictured is the new Supertrapp slipon. looks just like this picture BUELL RACE HEADER Several p/n's Looks like the old header except one new support is welded between the tubes about halfway down. BUELL RACE MUFFLER several p/n's Looks like the old race mffler, NOT Supertrapp. BUELL RACE KIT several p/n's Consists of race header and race muffler plus air cleaner and ignition module (ECM) So once again we have the option of a real RACE SYSTEM from Buell. Maybe someday they will get this stuff back on the website, or dealers that care about Buell like my friends in Topeka who made sure I had the new catalog. Either one would help their sales. |

Also the catalog offers the Blue header from the 2002 X1W and the Millenium Silver Ceramic header. Why you would spend alot of money for no performance gain I don't know, but sometimes "it is better to look good then to feel good." |

But the real race system does not provide the tuning ability of the SuperTrapp or White Bros disk systems. Nor a potential Boss application for the race header... Designing a muffler to fit the race header seems to be the most straightforward thing to do : one simple short and straight tube correctly welded on the muffler, what could be more simple ? Hoping that at the end of this story we'll hear ST saying "OK, that reference is the right one for the race header !"... IMHO, the combination of a ST muffler with the Buell race header is among the best setups for our favorite bike. |

I second that emotion. My Buell race muffler has cracked 3 times. I was hopefull of putting the ST IDS on next time. |

If your looking for a simple, straight-through type muffler that could be modified to fit the race header collector, check out the Race Bullet mufflers from Dynomax. Modify the inlet to be a slip-fit connection, and weld a turnout to the outlet. Strips of SS sheetmetal could be form fitted to become rear hangers. I have seen Adel clamps that are 4", 5", and 6" in diameter and can be found with high temp isolation material (check your local aircraft supply store). Here's a link to the Dynomax catalog:Race Bullet Specs |

Schemky, Did your Kooks come with the cherry bomb looking muffler or the new style cannister type muffler? I have the older muffler and was just wondering if the new one sounded any different. BTW my header fit with no problems with the old exhaust bracket on my '00 X-1. |

Dynomax, Edelbrock, etc... Probably good solutions for somebody having a race header, some welding skill and no care for noise level. But with the ST or White Bros, it's so nice to get power/torque/noise tuning capabilities. You're tired of the sound level with 18 disks ? Just remove 3 of them and 10mn later you'll enjoy again your Buell with less dBs. You find that top end is a bit just ? Just add 3 disks and 10mn later you'll get the extra ponies (up to some limit of course !). Actually, if I can get a new reinforced ST for my race header, I'll probably go as well for the Snuf'R end cap, giving a kind of "on/off" on the sound level of my Buell. I would try to fit on it a small electric motor connected to a switch. Then in a fraction of a second (cops around or not) I would just hit the switch and go either quiet or loud. Wouldn't it be nice ?! |

Rdrage, The Kooks muff was the canister type, which is well made, just to loud for my tastes. Are you interested in a nearly new muffler? I'm serious. |

Schemky, Thank you very much for posting the pictures of your exhaust. Very nice setup! As I have neither welding tools nor skills, I will join the rest of the bunch in crossing my fingers and hoping for ST to announce that their latest muffler fits the race header. Cheers, Semi |

The supertrapp pipe you see in this picture is part number 825-71230, special polished by ST for me. It supposedly has been superceded again by part number 725-71235. Near as I can tell from the info I've been able to collect, the only difference is the rear mount. The new rear mount looks good. I wonder if they'll sell it separate, because it looks like a good way to mount a race header ready version of the daytona boss.

Al: Can this pipe be cut in the front to fi the race header? Jose |

Jose, Doesn't appear that it would work, or at least not easily. Look at this picture: Now look at this picture One would have to wack a good bit off the front of a new supertrapp to get clearance for the end of the race header collector. It would be far easier to modify an old supertrapp to not fail than it would be to modify the new one to fit. |

You are right Al, its way longer than it needs to be plus there is that thick reinforcing sleeve in the front that won't want to compress and the race header collector isn't round in that area. Jose |

My third race can has now expired. Once again the perf tube has broken allowing the stuffing to be ejected. There are no "serviceable" parts in it so I can not get the perf tube from HD. Tried a Supetrapp core but upon expansion it cracked. Maybe its time to mount the old Car style Supertrapp of the early race headers as the the new style specific purpouse can has been redesigned and will not longer fit. I'm flat out of ideas. Any suggestions? Jose |

Jose : send a message to SuperTrapp as Al and me did, asking to get a reference fitting the race header. If they get several requests, they may finally make one for us. |

Jose : That perforated tube is only a piece of flat mesh bent into a tube then spot welded in about three places to make the join. It wouldn't be difficult to make a new tube and weld it all the way along so it didn't have a split seam as its weak point. The reason it breaks up is because it isn't sturdy enough, which making your own would soon overcome. Rocket in England |

Rocket: I put a Supertrapp core that one of pour local speed shops sell separately. It has samller holes and its very hard with a continuous longitudinal spot weld. Had a muffler shop expanded it at the ends for fitmemt. At $45 is was not cheap but hopefuly it will last till the next one. jose |
