XB12 is better because that is what I have.

There is no objective answer to this question. This is like asking, "Which is better, a size 9 or size 12 boot?"

That said, I have heard people who have ridden both a lot comment that the 9 is "smoother" than the 12. Smoother is not measurable so far as I know.

Need more details like which bikes are you comparing

up, yah, it is - knock sensor, trembler, or seismoghraph will do it.

best test I've heard of for vibrations from an engine is the old rolls royce test - stand a coin on the motor, on its edge, with the motor running. Back when RR hand built cars, if the coin fell over with the motor idling, the motor failed, and the mechanic was likely to lose their job...

No shit? Ummm...I think by "smoother" they are not talking about a lack of vibes. They are talking about the "feel" of the motor in terms of power delivery, etc... At least, that is what I was talking about being immeasurable. That is the reason I was using the "quote" marks. I was hoping to not have to explain myself to the lowest common denominator.

I mean you have a ulysses. why don't you go to the dealer and test drive a cityx? I have heard the power delivery is better through the whole range for the 9 but have no experience myself. I know several people on here have had both bikes.

If it wearn't for the fact that i feel like a monkey humping a football, I'd have a CityX in a heart beat - next best thing, the wife has one that she lets me ride (sometimes)

My wish would be for a Uly with a 984 engine...



The CityX is very smooth, and the power delivery is spot on.

I just swapped out the inner air box for the 07 version on both bikes - the seat of the pants feeling (improvement in both cases), is more pronounced on the 9 - what a hoot...

I prefer the grunt of the 12 over the rev of the 9. I like the CityX but would buy the STT.

I had the City-X, rode it 12,000 miles in a year. I bought the Uly and rode it 10,000 miles in 6 months. I had both bikes together for two months, going from one to the other frequently, the Uly won out for me. With out question.
The 9 had lower gearing so it reved quicker, but the torque of the 12 made up for it. I found the 12 to be MUCH smoother on long rides and never saw any time where it vibrated more than the 9. They were even similar idling.
I like the upright seating and the longer leg room, longer susp travel, ele outlets, great seats. The wind doesn't hit on the Uly like the X did.
I couldn't ride the City-X more than 420 miles in a day( I tried), but I have ridden the Uly 700 + with no problem at all.

I wish my XB9SX had the 1203 ,motor with the City X gearing. I suppose I did the best compromise with the bike. Too short for the Uly so I modified the City X. Works great, runs up the dirty backroads like a champ. All the Uly fender set bolts on. Bags and a new tail section in the works.
