10K service, $358 later... I get the bike home from 40 mile trip from dealership... fork oil leaking out of left front fork. I wipe it up hoping it's just some kind of overflow (I know nothing about this stuff), another 40 mile ride.... more fork oil (now splattered on wheel & brakes). So... dealership f'd up right? (fork service is part of 10k) I spoke with service manager: 1) they cannot pick up the bike, claim they are too busy with winterization pickups so I have to deliver it (otherwise it's over a week out minimum) 2) they said it sounds like a blown fork seal, but the 10k service does not replace fork seals so they probably didn't cause it. Interesting...no leaky before 10k service... leaky immediately after 10k service... 1 + 1 = ? |

Interesting.. they just called back and I'm supposed to hear from van driver today to schedule a pickup in next 2 days. I have a feeling the service manager looked over my service records and did the math for himself. I wasn't relishing riding a bike with fork oil on the wheel, so that part is good. But they still asked me to pick up the bike after they are done with it this time... sigh.. can't expect too much I guess, ha. Just want it fixed, and I want the Buell tech to take a refresher course. Stay tuned... |

Did they take it for a test ride after the service? A couple years ago I bought a used X1 and shortly after that took it in to have the leaking paper rocker box gaskets replaced. A day or so after I called to check on the status and they told me it was done - the mechanic was just road testing it now. When I got there 20 minutes later they said bad news -as he was turning around and getting back on the highway the belt "broke" - with less than 10K. They were very nice, replaced the belt at cost and no labor. It only occurred to me after being on this website for some time that the number one cause for belt breakage is wheelies. Maybe the same thing applies here - though I doubt you'll ever get them to admit it. |

If I remember correctly, servicing the forks is part of the 10k service. It was done on mine. Good to hear that they are going to pick it up for you afterall. Midnight... THEY broke your belt, then made YOU pay for a new one????? I don't think I would call that "very nice". I think I would have made them replace the belt on their own dime, since the bike was under their care when it happened. (Message edited by ratyson on November 06, 2006) |

Fork oil is changed as part of the 10k service. I know this b/c the dealer damaged one of my caps in removing the forks and charged me for the replacement part |

Actually fork service is not mandatory till 20K on newer model HD's/Buells. |

Beachbuell---- at what year did buell recomend 20k fork oil changes? I know wih my dads 04 softtail its scheduled at 30k |

Dudes, I mentioned it had the fork service (it's an '05 CityX and that IS part of the 10k service). That's not the issue. The issue is - what did they mess up in the process to cause this and - should they be treating me like royalty because it was an inexcusable mistake for a qualified technician, or is it something even a great tech can mess up on occasion (ps. please don't tell me to do the service myself, it's just not an option) |

I stand corrected..... The Buells fork oil IS scheduled for every 10K. The HD's are at 20K as stated. I apologize, we now return you to your normally regular scheduled programming. |

What they should do is pick up your bike for you, do the service correctly this time, not charge you for that portion of the service or make good on it somewhere, somehow. The fork seal was prolly pinched or installed wrong. Not a huge problem that will hurt the bike. But, I woundn't ride it at all until it is fixed properly, more of a safety concern. The fork-oil change is a big job to do yourself, unless you have proper tools and a lift. Good luck, let us know how it turns out. |

My Uly blew a fork seal at 25K miles. It was repaired under warranty. Your bike has a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty.....take it back and they should repair it, no questions asked. |

This is why I do my own work on my bike. I'm more likely to take my time and do the job right. And if I do mess something up at least I don't have to deliver and pickup and deal with dealerships that don't want to accept responsibility. Buy a service manual and do as much possible yourself! |

How about this? I had a rear tire replaced, when I picked up the bike I headed back to the service area. Right then I heard the unmistakable sound of someone doing a burnout. Problem was, when I got there a few seconds later I found it was MY bike and MY BRAND NEW TIRE! ***AND*** it was the service manager doing it???!!! I watched with amusement, right then he saw me. The best way to describe his expression was OH SH*T! AND...he did not have time to replace the tire that evening??? My ride had left, so I told him you fix it tonight or I will ride YOUR bike home and I WILL treat it with the same care and respect he treated mine with! I told him I was looking forward to practicing Wheelies, Stopies and burnouts. He changed the tire right then. That independent shop is no longer in business. I wonder why. I was really looking forward to beating the crap out of a Ducati Monster too! |

So here's the latest: 1) they picked it up Wed (2 days later) 2) just called (Thurs) confirming fork seal has a leak, but they DENY causing it (I just can NOT fathom that - though I guess it makes sense from a business standpoint, but not a customer service standpoint. They just worked on the forks, now they leak - duh) 3) he was telling me the part is cheap but it's a huge labor job, he was about to drop the bomb on me as to how much it will cost but he didn't get to it 4) I overhear someone chime in in the background, reminding him it's under warranty - so he pipes up and says they will order the part and fix it up, and figure out how to get it back to me 5) tells me the part is 1 week out at least 1 WEEK OUT for the part! says they are standalone dealership, so he can't get it from other dealership in the area. so I am out my bike for at least 2 weeks for a problem they caused, but deny causing... |

UPDATE: They picked it up, claimed to fix it, and delivered it again. This time it's even more f'd up!!! 1) Has 2 huge gouges on both fork tubes next to the instrument cluster... the gouges wrap around the forks (almost looks like they were taken off and put into some kind of giant vice grip. 2) The rebound adjuster on the left fork sticks up way higher than the right one and will not turn more than 1 turn in either direction. Basically making the left & right fork rebounds uneven and dangerous. I called the delivery guy and made him turnaround and pick it back up. Service manager hasn't returned my call yet. This is why people don't buy Buells my friends... plain and simple.... poor service. Fuming.... |
