Ezblast : Anyone find any packing that actually quiets the sound? i used the FMF , was 9.95 at my local jap bike shop fmfracing.com and was very pleased . it's a thick @3/4" blanket of glass and was exactly the right width to wrap my v&h core .i did one complete wrap cut it and taped in place with masking tape like they said , then 2 strips about 2" each on each side to fill the eliptical shape of the v&h can and taped them in place . slid the whole thing in using a thin piece of plastic to get it past the mount bolts inside the can . couldn't have fit or filled the can any better than it did and sounds great . high performance sound w/o being obnoxiouse . noticed gearheadiko said he stuffed his WB w FMF and wondering if he used the FMF for 2 strokes ? its a loose fluff packing as opposed to the 4-stroke blanket type i bought . they had both at the store . with the v&h the core comes out with the tail cap so you really need something you can wrap . anyway , happy blasting |

Woody Would you say your V&H is almost as quiet as stock now? I bought a used blast with the same V&H, but I am currently worried the neighbors might call the police, the pipes are so loud. I would rather re-pack the pipes than replace with stock pipes, as long as I can get the V&H quiet enough. |

The more you quietin(choke it)it the better the OEM system will out perform it ... Then you wonder WTF did "i" spend the "BIG" $$$.$$ for anyhow ??? Could it be LOOKS ??? In BLASTing LaFayette |

Welcome to the board Gorodin! Repacking it will quiet it down. The stock muffler has the perfect shape, but not the perfect performance. If I had a stock muffler, I would cut the top and back off of it, rebuild the inside, maybe having a "U" at the outlet to get more length, then seal her up and put a side outlet on it. |

Woody: No I used the Blanket stuff (the WB is the same as the V&H) and stuffed the snot out of it. Buellistic:"Your supposed to make torque/HP not noise !!!" "The more you quiet it(choke it) the better the OEM system will out perform it ..." So which is it, noisy or quiet? There are a variety of different ways to quiet an exhaust and a variety of different ways to tune it. If you overpack an exhaust you have taken away all the air gaps in the packing that trap the noise (and flow), winding up with a more free flowing exhaust. Why it wound up being quieter could be because it wasnt well packed to begin with. I have serious doubts about a modified stock exhaust outperforming any of the complete aftermarket performance exhausts unless the outside stock (boat anchor) housing is just a shell housing an inner pipe. Lets not forget I've tried at least 6 different (Blast) exhausts and they all performed differently (with at least 1 being worse than stock)!

The outer shell is the perfect shape for corners, and durable for when you go off road! LOL! I have never scraped the stock muffler in a corner, I have with the Kerker. Getting the primary length right, and getting the baffels out dumping it into an empty housing! Which aftermarket performed worse than stock? |

Emgo! Not part of a complete system, but a temporary replacement for the WB can. Loud and inefficient! |

sorry had major puter problems last nite , no its not as quiet as the stock , but its definately much better than it was before . nice hi-performance sound w/o being obnoxiouse when i bought my bike it had the v&h on it and it was soooooo LOUD i couldnt stand the noise riding it . so i found a used stock ex on craigslist cheap and local but while it was quieter it kinda sounded like my lawnmower and the performance took a big hit ;-( if you haven't opened your old V&H do , you'll probably find it empty or almost , repack it . a blast with a freeflow exhaust AND proper jetting is a TOTALLY different bike than a stocker . if any of you guys are going back to a stock exaust , let me know , would love a v&h for my lawn tractor |

Okay, so this V&H re-packing project taught me something about myself. I am not as mechanically gifted as I had hoped. I had thought that it would be no problem to remove the pipes myself. The truth was ... awkward. I actually managed to snap a 1/4" hex bit torquing it on those hex bolts. I also discovered that if you try to do any work on a Blast while it is on the kickstand, it can be knocked over very easily. Oh, and by the way, doing this in the rain really, really sucks. A day later, I am few tools poorer, a few bloody knuckles richer, and the muffler is still attached to the bike. Can anyone point me at any tips, tutorials, anything that preferably used big pictures and small words? Also, are there any special tools that I should/must use? |

>Also, are there any special tools that I should/must use? A big hammer? Just kidding. I empathize with your less then thrilled discovery of current mechanical skills. When I realized I couldn't dunk, shoot, block shots or defend it crushed my NBA goals ... . |

a few bloody knuckles richer ok you've started your journey into mechanicdom ;-P and in the rain , even better ok now those 1/4 in hex bolts , i'm ass-uming the ones holding up the back bracket , yea they suck . and they screw into a non -captive nut inside that bracket . thinks you need to do some tool shopping . was it an allen head socket on a ratchet you broke ? i put mine in backwards using a regular l shaped allen wrench to hold it and then put the nut on from the outside . other than that you'll need a good set of combination wrenches and sockets and when you get it off you'll need a t-20? t25 ? torx bit to get the end cap off . torx is kinda like an allen head only better . you can buy the bits at any hardware/tool store . |

From reading the older posts and what you all are talken about now, seems no matter what after market exhaust you get, it's gonna be loud ? |

Its going to be up to you. I've heard 2 of the quieter exhausts (Pro Series & White Brothers-both now unavailable) described as 'ear splitting', but neither are very loud to me. |

hindsight on repacking a WB just take off the front endcap and repack from there. Stainless steel wool makes a very good insulation |

Gorodin: Did you get your muffler off yet? If not, what are you having trouble with? |

Thanks for the tips. Here's the update: I got a proper ratchet bit and a couple of jacks to prop the bike up (under the passenger pegs). With proper leverage I was able to get the hex bolt loose without snapping the bit this time. After that, the pipes came off easy. Then came the bad news. I opened up the muffler case and discovered why it was so loud. The case was EMPTY! I don't just mean that there was no packing. The only thing that came out were a few shards of metal mesh. It looks like a previous owner bottomed out hard on something and shattered the unit's innards. There is a huge scrape and dent on the bottom of the case, and there were 3 different kinds of bolts holding the end cap on. Now I need to find new pipes ASAP. preferably cheap. |

Neither the V&H or the Pro-series are really a good aftermarket value in terms of power. The Jardine - if you use the front lower stock mounting hardware and not what they supply for longevity,is, because Jardine copied WB's header in Stainless - a very smart move since a) - WB no longer produces one - and b) The WB is second only to the Force exhaust in terms of power gained - there for such a header would be almost as good with a regular can setup such as Jardine uses. The list by power: Force White Brothers Jardine D&D Bub V&H Kerker Pro-Series Stock (even modified - lol) I think a good option now days would be the Jardine header with the Supertrapp 3" universal with 23 discs, because sooner or later the can will go and then you can enjoy the quietness that discs provide as well as increased power. damn EZ's quick...I agree with EZ mostly...IMHO of the two the Pro series is better but only just...V&H's need repacking too often for me. Chris if your V&H Header is still in good shape look for a Supertrap you can to bolt to it. Thats probably the best option for a muffler at this point since the WB isn't made anymore and the Jardin is essentially a repeat of the V&H (though the Jardin has a quiet core insert and a better header than the V&H) I never liked the Kerker (it just looks weird sorry), the Bub's is just LOUD and the D&D is almost as bad. I lasted 3 days with my Jardin before I repacked my WB and bolted it's can to the Jardin header. The Jardin can sits in my garage collecting dust. (Message edited by xgecko on November 08, 2006) |

Concur with the boys-get a another muffler and keep the headpipe. Aftermarket (or stock) Harley mufflers can also be used, but you'll have to make your own rear mounting bracket (easy using the V & H bracket)-that might be a cheap way to go, but it may be a little loud. |

Can anyone give me advice on specific cans that would be good to put on the headpipe -- preferable cheaper than buying a new V&H. I am still woefully ignorant and am on a tight budget. Thanx. |

SUPERTRAPP Megaphone or SUPPERTRAPP Racing series look around at all the universial series there (stay away from the Blast pipe), find one that'll fit your header and fab some mounting hardware (Message edited by xgecko on November 09, 2006) |

Hey EZ, what size are the bolts you used when you added disks to your WB I finally found a source for E-series disks (Message edited by xgecko on November 09, 2006) |

Cool! Could you share that info with me - I have a friend with a stocker - the bolts are a 1/2" longer - I could measure them again this weekend and give you exact size. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |
