Been seaching the archive's for a dyno comparison between the full Pro-series race kit (headers, muffler, air box mods, race ECM)and a poor man's race kit (slip-on muffler, K&N filter, race ECM). My vision is getting blurred from all the scrolling text. I guess what I'm asking is are the headers worth the cost? How much of a difference do they really make? Can't wait to un-cork my 2001 X1!

Caboose,
They did that test (with a V&H) in the BTW issue with the Blast! on the cover. As I recall it matched the full race kit above 6200 but gave up a significant amount thru the majority of the mids...more than just a few horsepower as I recall. I was running the "poor mans race kit" til I got a race header with a supertrapp. Since my supertrapp failed and I had to revert back to the stock header/V&H. It's noticeable on 2nd gear throttle wheelies, that's for sure.

Here is an early dyno run of my 88ci and my small 74ci motor. It had ported heads, axtell cyl and je pistons(9.5 comp....mistake in calculation.. wanted higher), hsr 42, Buell pro pipe and muffler, SE cams(536 lift). The SE cams made 103 and change hp and 100 ft/lbs(with some motor problems). I have recently put in the 585 redshift cams. The 585's made a huge difference but I have not dyno'd yet. Good luck.

I bought a 2001 M2L in March and have tipped over on it several times because I can barely touch the ground and I'm only 5'1". Does anyone know if this bike can be lowered more? I need to be able to get a little more footing at stop signs. My parts guy said he's not going to sell me any more clutch handles and I so dearly love this bike. Please help!

Hi Peggy, don`t forget (no pun intended) to stretch your legs by thick soles and heels under your riding boots. Cheap, (I like that) and maybe just enough.

1,dynorun

This is my pretty-much-stock '97 S3 with 17K miles. The only mods are a Dynojet Kit (Stage 1) and a K&N air filter...
Not too shabby; I like the 72 ft.-lb....

dynorun,Dyno Run

My basically stock S-3 with 17K miles on it...

I like the 72 ft.-lb. of torque, 77.4 rwhp isn't too shabby...

I don't like the dip; we smoothed it out some in subsequent runs, but it's still there.

I had my TL1000 S Dynoed after I put on BSM Mufflers. They have the same sort of low rumble as the Yoshi's on the X1 used to have, but louder (little to loud I think)
A nice raise in HP and Torque against the standard setup.
Next week a K&N airfilter and we'll hook it up at a Yosbox. Easy tuning for injection bikes.
(why doesnt Buell make this??)

I think we will get above 120 HP and 106 TQ at the rear wheel.

Its in Nm, I Dont know what this is in ft/lbs.
Anyone know a easy (free) conferter program?

Here's a reaction on Caboose's comparison question.
Now I also do not have a dyno readout, but I'd say the headers AND the damper make up for a DRAMATIC power difference.
Living in Europe I believe Buells -x1- are even more "crippled" than back in ol' US of A because of emissions, now even I find that remarkable, yet that's what I've been reading.
Believe me, apart from the "more democratic" vision we have on druguse in Holland, we're one bureaucratic country. Oh, and luckily we don't have sitcoms like friends.
In everyday life that means the x1 has a very "unuserfriendly" powerdelivery in low-down revs, not to mention the very poor sound of the original muffler. Thirty OE dampers, anyone?
Now my belief in sportsexhausts has always been very reluctant, as most sportsbikesmanufacturers nowadays make excellent exhausts bar weight, sound and dimensions.
Talking 'bout the sound of my x1, my dealer suggested fitting a Scorpion and fiddling the ECM somewhat. "That's strange", I say, as the module can't be fiddled with. "So please order me the ECM and fit the Scorpion", I added, the code and price I already knew thanks to BikeHospital.
The ride became far better and hadn't it been for the continuously snapping off of the front mounting, and the riding off with the steering lock I'd probably still have the system today.
LUCKILY I DON'T! Damaging the headers in the fall I had them replaced with the complete pro-series kit, as the dealers' had a used muffler which saved me a bundle.
The difference really is quite remarkable, to the entire range!! Now I don't have the graphs to prove it, but I reckon it gains, ooooh, errrr, a LOT. And who cares, I just ride it on a daily basis and don't care too much for readings, yet would be very surprised if it didn't perform to your liking.
I believe the headers to be a combination with the muffler, as I don't think a "normal" sportsdamper will fit the increased diameter of the exhaust. Guess that'll be a letdown.
Good luck to you and keep me posted, Jilles.

Will a Thunderslide do anything about the dip?

I took care of the dip in mine by throwing on the Full Race Kit. That's the only performance mod I've made: header, pipe, ECM and gutted air box. The engine was also rebuilt under warantee at 13,500 miles and as of this Dyno run the total milage was 19,825.

Correct header length (aka Buell Race Header, Kooks, Force) will fix that dip. Nothing else will. JMHO

Well, after a extremely bad experience with Santa Cruz Buell service department, I had a friend (Dave) try out Fremont Cycle Center. They are new to Buell, but definitely have a good start. Their tech took Dave's X1 and made it run so good it made me want to cry. We have been having the same things done to our bikes, so usually they are very similar. After getting his bike back, there was such a difference between mine and his, I did not want to ride mine anymore.

Here is the short story: We both have stock bikes and wanted some additional power (imagine that). We decide to get the V&H slip-on and K&N filter installed on both bikes at Santa Cruz Buell where we both bought our bikes several months earlier. Dave gets his bike back first and it drives terrible. Farts and pops, runs lean, stumbles, low power, etc, etc. Needless to say, he is furious. He can not figure out how they could say that it was done. He finally comes to the concusion that they must not have road tested his bike.

My bike is next on their list, and after doing some research, I decide to have them add the race ECU as well rather than suffer thought the same stuff Dave is with his bike. The ECU fixed most of the problems. My bike runs fairly good so I am happy for the time being. Dave installs the race ECU and it seems to be mostly fixed as well, but he still has some other issues and is having problems with the service department.

Flash forward 2 months and Dave still has those warranty issues unresolved and is not completely satisfied with his bike performance either, so he decides to try Fremont Cycle Center. After getting his bike back from the service department, he brings it over and lets me drive it. I had not realized how bad my bike was actually running until driving his and mine back to back! I promply called up Fremont and made an appointment.

Flash forward another month. I bring in my bike and work out a deal where they will do a service, replace several parts, install my PCIII, and dyno tune my bike. After doing all the standard tune up stuff, and several other tweaks, they put my bike on the dyno and proceed to create a custom fuel map for my PCIII. The enclosed dyno sheet reflects the first and last dyno run. Adding the PC and properly tuning it netted an increase of 6.4 Hp, and 4.7 torque.

In closing, I can not stress how good the service was at Fremont Cycle Center. They were willing to order parts in advance, wrestle with Buell corporate on warrenty issues, spent a full day on my bike going through everything possible on the bike, kept me up to date on everything, replace all kinds of little stuff like stripped screws, etc, etc. They even detailed my bike for free before I picked it up!

Oh, and did I mention, my bike screams! It will pull from 1500 rpm in fourth all the way to 7000 without a complaint or hiccup. I can go through parking lots now without the surging and galluping it used to exibit. Throttle weelies in -second- are so easy it is difficult <not> to do weelies. What a difference a good tune makes. (not to mention a flat 75+ ft-lb torque curve from 3000 to 7000.. heh heh)

If you are in the San Francisco bay area, check out Fremont Cycle Center..

Before and after PCIII installation

Radarman, I have some questions about how well you bike ran before the PCIII. I have a 00 X1 with a V&H, K&N and a RAC ECU. The bike runs OK but I think it should run better. I notice that you stated you can do second gear power wheelies. Is this with no clutch? How much do you weight. I am 5'11 and about 195 and my bike will barley power wheelie a foot high in first gear, NO CLUTCH. It does hold it up for a little bit. I have heard guys say they can flip their Buell's over backwards when they just hit the throttle hard it low gear. My bike WILL NOT EVEN COME CLOSE TO THIS. Any information would help.

Thanks,

DWIGHT

Seatoni,

I have a less powerful M2; I CANNOT "whack" the throttle in first gear or it will flip. When I speed shift into second at around 7000 rpm, I MUST be sitting on as much of the tanks forward edge as reasonably possible or it will flip in second. My M2 will power wheelie in second (W/O the clutch) raising the front wheel about 18" to 24", which is quite controllable. Your X1 is potentially more powerful than my M2. Me thinks you definitely need some tuning.

Seatoni,

I have to admit that the bike ran quite strong before the PCIII, but the improvements I got from the PCIII was mainly driveability. Before the PC, the bike was very peaky and did not want to run very well at lower rpms. Until you have a super running Buell, most people will not know what they are missing. Riding Dave's and then mine back to back was a enlightening experience. I really did not realize that mine ran as poor as it was until then.

I weigh 230 and am 6'4". When I am referring to power weelies, I am talking about running about 3000 rpm in second gear, closing the throttle for a sec, and then firewalling it. If I do that with straight arms I will end up on the rear license plate. If I anticipate the weelie and lean into the bike over the tank, usually it will not do anything surprising other than lifting the front wheel a few inches. Since I am 6'4", I sit further back on the seat and have a higher center of gravity than most, all of which promotes wheelies if you are not watching what you are doing.

It was my understanding that in terms of raw HP and Torque the M2 beats the X1 at the bottom and the X1 is king at the top end. All things considered 100hp is impressive.

Schemky,
Kevin didnt write that down on the back of the sheet that I scanned for him. Just give him a call at 314 771 7100. Ask for service/Kevin Hainey. We are getting ready to do some work on my S3T which has 46,500+ miles on it. He was showing me some dyno results on his bike. I thought I would share them here. I cant decide if I want to go big bore or not. I put a lot of miles on and am concerned about relaiblity of a big bore motor. Buttttt.... I love lots of torque too.:)

V2win,

Thanks, I'll call next week. I think 80 ft. lbs. is a lot. 100 h.p. is after all, 100 h.p. The "experts" convey to me that stock bore will/can net good results. I'll stickin' with the stock bore after much deliberation. 46,500 miles is a testament to the durability of the 1200cc lump.
