When I first got my M2 with its 98 S1 tank and tail, I asked around to find out the tank's capacity. Most people seemed to agree it was 4 gallons. After running out of gas today on the highway, I can definitively say the tank holds exactly 3.25 gallons when filled from bone dry up to the bottom of the rubber collar. Maybe it's finally time to get off my butt and get the stock tank I've had sitting in my garage for months painted and installed! |

My 96 S1 with stock tank holds 4. Maybe the pump had a busted regulator and you got some free gas? |

LOL, There was a story on why some tanks were 4 gallons and why some were not. I am not sure if the story is/was true so I am not gonna say yet... |

Here's my official theory: 4 US gallons is approximately 3.33 imperial gallons. Back in 98, the design spec for the S1 tank called for a capacity of 4 US gallons. The engineer assigned to the tank thought he was measuring a capacity of 3.33 imperial gallons, but was actually measuring in US gallons. The tank thus ended up with a capacity of 3.33 US gallons. |

Spidey, My guess is they originally spec'd the volume and it was used that for the _outer_ measurement of the tank, hence the reduced capacity. Am I close ![;)](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/winker.gif) |

It matters how much material went into the can during the roto-mold process. The OUTSIDE dimension are perfectly consistent.
