I have power to lights, fuel pump but when i hit the start button, nothing happens, not a click, no dimming of head lights nothing.... Could it be the relays and/ or the diode thats in the fuse box? The manual says to check diode continuity. Is that the same as a basic continuity/ohms setting on the meter or is therr a special setting on the DMM for diode continuity? I get nothing between the leads on diodes with continuity test feature on DMM.... It seems like this has got to be something simple...Can you pick up relays and diode from any parts store or do i have to go to HD? Thanks in advance Chuck |

Chuck, There is troubleshooting tree for starting in the service manual in section 5. There is a specific tree for nothing clicks. When you remove the relay, the top terminal is 30, that should be hot with ignition on, the one on the bottom left 86 should be hot when you push the start button, the one on the bottom right 85 should be ground and is the starter interlock circuit. Do these checks quick and follow the tree. You should figure it out quickly enough. Sorry gotta go. good luck. Steve |

Thanks Ricochet, I did follow those steps and found out it was the diode. If i wiggle the diode and hit the start button it will start.. Can i buy that diode at any parts store or do i have to go to HD? Thanks |

chuck, I don't know the answer for sure. Because diodes are rated for current and voltage, and most importantly the package it is housed in, finding a perfect replacement would be a lot easier at a HD dealership. I guess if it was me, and I was in a jam to ride, I would grab an overrated diode at a radio shack and stick it in, but you'll risk bending the terminals open and creating an intermittent problem later. What I've found by checking my bike is that you need both diodes for ignition/fuel pump and crank, but it will crank only - with just the bottom diode. Have you tried switching them to see if it will crank? My concern in reading your last post is that the terminals are merely loose. Are you sure the diode is open? Have you pulled it and checked it with the DMM? Again to answer your question the problem will be finding an aftermarket diode packaged like a fuse. Please let us know what you find. Steve |
