I don't miss an episode! Anyone who owns canines should not miss "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel. Amazing stuff. The only problem is that my wife also watches the show and ever since seeing that first episode I've had an odd feeling that I am being trained. Oh well, she's a great trainer. She and Pammy can start a new show; they are... The Husband Whisperers! I sure do miss our Border Collie, Roger. |

Thank you Luke. I'm a big Mastiff fan and past and future owner. Its a rare breed here in the States with only 6-8 breeders. No beginner dog for sure. To my breeders knowledge I am one of two in my state at this Time. |

People have been taken to court with their dogs, usually after they have bit someone. One of the "defenses" was that they "had warning signs up", which in turn went against them because you are admitting that your dogs are dangerous. |

And for another perspective, my previous house had a neighbor, who's sons dog would visit when their son was on vacation. When my 2 year old went back to *our* yard to play, that dog would go into a snarling snapping fit just 3 feet from my kids on the other side of the fence. I'm sure the dog thought he was just protecting his property. That dog is damn lucky I didn't decide to protect my kids Needless to say, I didn't appreciate it. |

If that WAS a picture of you and your dog I would say, "Screw, Beware of dog, Beware of chicken legs of owner." |

In all seriousness, I think Mikej has a good idea for a sign... CAUTION Dog(s) on property. Contact owners before entering. |

Reep sorry man but if the dog is in a fenced in yard then the dog is no harm to you or your children. Why is the dog lucky?? Sounds to me you just don't like the dog cause he's growling and barking at your kids. I understand that the dog may be annoying you but if its contained then no harm done right?? |

Do you ever watch OCC on Discovery channel and Senior always says "I'm gonna stick my size twelve boot in your butt." Ever see that? If I tell somebody they have chicken legs, they may get upset and stick their foot in my buttcrack. You know, it loses effectiveness when you have to explain it, although it may not have been that clever either, but it sounded good when I was saying it in my head. |

Beautiful Dog there Bads1, I'm not a legal type but the sign Mikej suggested does sound like a great idea. Alerted but not threatened. |

Dana, A dog threatening a child no matter if there is a fence in the way or not is absolutely unacceptable. I also would find it extremely annoying to have a dog barking let alone snarling viciously from the other side of the fence. This reflects most poorly on the dog owner, not the dog. It shows that the owner does not have control over his dog and that the dog perceives him/herself as dominant. It is a recipe for disaster. The solution is extremely simple. Watch The Dog Whisperer. |

Blake I know what it percieves. But here in Wisconsin there is nothing you can do about it if the dog is contained. Most states you probably would have to report it to your city or town as a annoyance because the animal hasn't done anything yet and hope they do something about. Some counties and states have laws about this. Now please reread Reep's post that dog is only there sometimes so it is not used to it surroudings like it would be in its own home. It doesn't maybe see kids playing in a near by yard on a day to day basis. Thats where socialization is the key. That is a big part in having a even kieled temperment on a dog. |

In my neck of the woods, if a dog is barking you and two others contact the city. They come out verify and take the owner to court. No one has a right to disturb the Peace. Barking dog, screaming kids, loud parties, etc. Not allowed. Ok I do try to coast in and out of here on my bike. |

How much time exactly am I supposed to spend sitting there letting my kids be threatened (by man or beast) while in my own back yard? Noise is one thing... I can ignore that to be neighborly. But if a dog is acting like he is going to attack me or my kids, I am going to take it at it's word and respond appropriately. If that dog decides to jump the fence and makes good on his constant threats, then what? Complain to the neighbors after my kid gets mauled? Fine, you put your "contained" aggressive dog next to my yard. How would you feel if I set up a backstop and "plinked" with my .30/06 towards your house and kids. Don't worry, I'm a crack shot, I never miss, so the bullets will be contained by my backstop. No problem, right? Legal or not, I would be a prick of a neighbor for doing it. And what if that dog was asleep on the porch in his own yard, and my 8 year old jumped the fence because his ball went over? And he gets attacked. Is that appropriate to have an 8 year old mauled because he forgot he was not supposed to tresspass and did not see the dog? My guns won't attack anything without me aiming and firing. I can't say the same about aggressive dogs. If I see someone trespassing, I can make the decision as to if I need to respond with deadly force or not. I would never put that decision in the hands of an animal. |

I used to have a next door neighbor that always talked of getting his gun out on my Dogs if they ever bit him or his kids. He ended up shooting my German shepherd and killing it. He was putting his trash cans behind his shed next to my fence and my dog approached aggressively. One year in prison with over 5k in restitution. His wife sold the house and divorced him while he was in jail.I'll spare the details of the suffering my family went through seeing the dog bleeding to death in the backyard because they were afraid of getting shot. |

I can symphatize with you for the situation you had to go through there. Did he shoot the dog through or over the fence? I would have not done anything that drastic unless the dog came through the fence and attacked. And I would not hold it against him if he had shot my dog if it was attacking on his property. It is unacceptable for people to let dogs project a threatening behavior along a shared property line or along a line of pubic passage like a sidewalk. If you want to have a dog for security, I think you have to train the dog to not effect the aggressive behavior, much less attack, until your property line is crossed or until the people are actually trying get through a entry or over a fence. If I had a dog that threatened everyone that approached, I would try to retrain it to do nothing more than retreat from threats and alert me in some way. Personally, I don't want a dog that will attack humans, with or without voice commands, around. Dogs are just not smart enough to get it right every time. It is a tough call when you factor in all the things in the real world that affect this. But I couldn't tolerate the presence of a neighbor that became aggressive and threatening every time I approached my property line. And I would have a hard time tolerating his dog doing the same thing. Its too bad that your neighbor and/or you could not have somehow resolved this before it escalated to the point it did. Jack |

Reep I know how you feel trust me but until that dog goes beyond that fence you have no leg to stand on nor do you have the right to threaten your neighbors animal. I have a neighbor that has a dog that is just a little heal nipper but he thinks he's a lion but he barks and barks at anyone in my yard for what seems forever. Now if this dog is doing this in the later part of the evening I can do something about it but they have it in at night. Kinda like a caged ZOO animal it can growl and roar all it want. Thats why we all have homeowners insurance but if my animal ever bit my insurance would cover it...once and demand the dog get euthanized. No worry I'd do it myself is hard is that would be. Your best bet is to talk to your neighbor to let them know of your discomforts of there son's animal. But taking action with a gun while the animal hasn't done anything is wrong. |

"until that dog goes beyond that fence you have no leg to stand on" That's not true. Disturbing the peace is a very valid and serious complaint. Talking to the neighbor would of course be the first and best approach, assuming they are reasonable people. In my view though, anyone who allows their dog no matter the size to misbehave like that is probably not a reasonable person. A dog exhibiting vicious behavior is a real problem, a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. |

Blake sorry but like I said in my town not much to be done unless the dog goes beyond its boundries. I know the city ordinance here pretty good involving pets. Though I agree with it being a nuisance and posing a threat and something should be done. I don't like it either and deal with it by a silky terrier behind me. Its the barking that ticks me off but then again..... here nothing I can do unless he's doing it in the later part of the evening. |
