I'm just trying out free image resizer software. What do you all think of this picture. I'm sure this shrunken image doesn't look nearly as good as the original. Gregg |

Upstate New York, near Watertown. There are 195 of them. I've been doing the surveying for the project for 2 years now. It's been very interesting from a surveying/engineering standpoint. Gregg |

Why don't they paint them blue... or try to camouflage them? |

I think the size on that is fine Gregg. If are too big they become an annoyance. Once they are wider than the display size you have to scroll around to see the image and also use the left to right scroll to read any text in the post and any others in that thread. They are putting a set of 28 of those up near Mars Hill, Maine. I ran into one of the rolling road blocks that they use for moving the blades and tower sections on a recent ride. http://www.windaction.org/pictures/2532 The site is about 200 miles from the house, I'm going to make a visit up there on one of my early rides next spring. The liner went back into the Darien jacket yesterday, had a nice ride, I can still enjoy a couple of hours on the road without suffering from the cold. Raining hard all day today though. Jack |

Congrats on the ride. It rained here last weekend. It's snowing right now. Lots of info on that link. You should definitely go and see those windmills. Like them or not, they are an amazing site. They are HUGE. Gregg |

Of course, some eco-cretin is going to accuse them of slowing the Earths airflow & causing global climate change. |

I haven't been in a few years, but they used to have a huge windmill on Block Island Ri. I used to tell all the boat people at the bar that it will be used to move the island. |

We're getting the front that brought you the snow in New York but it is still wet here. I'm on the coast so we haven't had any snow yet. But it won't be long. On the wind generators, those 28 generators will handle the load for 24,000 homes running at 40% efficiency. Up to 50,000 homes with good winds. I understand the concerns people have about the eco impact but I think it is acceptable for the gain. There is a hell of a lot less than the impact of generating the same amountt of power with any other power generating plant. As I understand it, the locals up there in Mars Hill are in favor of it. But the jerks that broke in to the construction site and and stole $40,000 worth of copper so they could sell it for scrap need to tied to the blades for 30 days or so. Jack |

They are putting those up like crazy in Iowa. Someone said that Iowa is so windy because Minnesota sucks (just kidding). A couple years ago I was working at a new substation that we were building for a batch of them. It had been an extremely cold December and I was talking to the superintendent. I asked him how the guys liked working up there in this cold. He said that most of his workers were from Texas and only about 10 of the 65 came back after Christmas. I don't blame them. They say that the farmers that lease out their land for the turbines can make a pretty decent profit from them. |

Minnesota sucks (just kidding). I've been to MN once and absolutely loved it. Every time I'd tell one of the locals how nice it was, they would say "you haven't been here in the winter." |

Staindus... As far as I'm concerned your above post absolutely owned T9r's post. Burst out laughing literally after reading it. Sorry T9r |

Yeah, I guess you either love them or hate them. I'm all for them but I really don't think I would like one in my back yard. They don't really make much noise but they do clutter up the view. I think it's a small price to pay for clean energy. The land owners do make a lot of money on them, especially up there. It's mostly just hay fields anyway. The cranes they use to erect them are huge. I'll try to post a picture Monday. They are really not that big considering the size of that boom. They do have huge ballasts though. Gregg |

Actually the winters in Minnesota are better than Iowa's. At least they get enough snow that you can enjoy it for skiing or snowmobiling. Ours are just cold. If you drive by any lake you'll see hundreds of ice-fishing shacks out there too. |

Mike, Right about the Iowa Minnesota border on the west side of I35 is that huge installation. There must be 50 - 75 of them. Every time I go by it looks like they are putting up more. Oh, by the way, you got the joke wrong. The reason the Mississippi flows from MN towards IA is because .......... Brad |

Thanks Ed, That was Mt. Washington(NH) during Laconia Bike Week last year. I've been up the quite a few times but the weather was never that good. It's funny you mention the no parking sign because up here, when the towers first went up, it was down right dangerous to drive on these roads. Lookie Loos everywhere stopping in the middle of the road. I wish I was down your way right now. We got 6" of snow the other day. Gregg |

"Why don't they paint them blue... or try to camouflage them?" "I don't know. Maybe to reflect heat?" I think it's so the vanes don't conduct heat to the air flowing over them. Thinner air would decrease the Bernoulli effect of the air flowing over the vanes. Most of the energy turning the windmill comes from the low pressure behind the vanes. The pressure difference would be higher with more dense air. Something like that... I could be totally wrong. Maybe they just had a lot of white paint to get rid of. |
