A few weeks back I bought some cheeseball MC jacket labeled "First Racing". It's a division of First Manufacturing and no relationship I can find with First Gear. I think it's the Lucky Seven model - the one with the big ugly "F7" on each arm. Any thoughts on these things? I got 'em for $200 plus tax (LA, Ca) and have only seen them for more. Along these same lines, I need to find some cool Buell patches to fit over the stitch marks of the soon to be removed F7 insignia... -Saro | ||

I need help. Does anyone knows any manufacturor that makes leather overpants in mens waist size 28 ? I could get by with 29. Feel free to make all the jokes about us height deficient people. I am trying to ride as long as the seasons allows. Roderick | ||

Roderick, There are a few places here in Milwaukee that make, carry, modify leather riding gear. One is "biker" oriented, one is in a mall and is more "fashion" oriented. Then there are the bike shops that carry the Vanson and other heavier race-weight gear. Just depends on how much you want to spend, and what you are looking for. If you are mainly looking to extend your riding season, I'd recommend Aerostich coupled with electric under-gear. I've even known of riders going to tack shops (cowboy and horse supply shops) to get leather riding gear made up. | ||

Captpete, The Chippewa motocross boots (not poop, that's what they're called), are $210 at this site (http://www.stompersboots.com/catalog/pages/moto.html), and $170 at most others. I really like the new Alpinestars M6 soft dirt boot. they're said to be slimmer than the heavier motorcross boots, and don't need much break-in. Has anyone tried the Air Speed jacket from Fieldsheer? It looks very similar to the Fieldsheer Air Blade jacket, but it's about $70 less. I borrowed my buddies Air Blade awhile back and liked the fit and style (although I could have done without the red and white graphics). The Air Speed is $229 new from Fieldsheer and the Air Blade is $299. BUT there is an AirBlade in my size (I think) on newenough.com for $229. Anyone have any opinions on either or both models? Bomber, One thing to keep in mind is that if you ride alot in the cold, you will eventually want some electric gloves. It's much easier to have the gloves plug into the vest, and manufacturers' wiring sytems are not inter-compatible. I bought a Widder vest a few years ago, and was very happy with it. Then I went for their gloves too, and was frankly dissapointed. They're plenty warm, but protective value in an accident is virtually nil. The shells are made in China and are mostly thin nylon. Only the fingers are leather, giving no protection to the palm or knuckles. Aerostitch doesn't make gloves at all. They are also not in the least water reppelent, as I learned the hard way. Gerbring's makes some good looking gloves, all leather, purpose built motorcycle gloves, rather than cheap crap with wires added. I haven't personally used them yet, but I'm thinking of getting some for this winter. | ||

Anybody tried those chemical heater inserts? I think you can get them for less then $1 each. I have good leather gloves, and LL Bean gore-tex overglove guantlets, and wondered if both of those and the chemical heater would get me to work (about 1 hour). Alternately, I wonder if there is just some sort of electrically heated insert I could use. It was chilly on this mornings ride in already! Bill | ||

Bomber, on the electric vest.... I've been using one for several years, it's made by Widder and is the Ventura model with a collar. There is some very good information at their web site that you may find helpful regardless of which brand you buy. http://www.widder.com/ I've also installed a BMW (M/C) power outlet on the side panel of my M2 for use with the Widder BMW hookup. An alternative to electric gloves that you might consider is electric grip wraps that Aerostich sells for $37. (Oops, I goofed! Enter catalog number 102-103 in their Product Search page.) I use these with an electric vest both controlled by an adjustable thermostat. The advantage with the wraps is that they're "on the bike" so you can still use your favorite gloves whether they're thin deer skins or full on winter gloves. There's no extra messing with wires getting on or off the bike. A disadvantage however is slightly thicker and not quite as grippy grips. For cold weather riding even if it's only chilly, you can ride miles with smiles with the warmth that electrics provides. Sparky 96S1, 98S3 | ||

O.K it's definitely Fall. My hands were ice cubes this morning. I didn't even pay attention to the temperature this morning, I just knew it was sunny and not rainning, until someone at work said it was 42F. No wonder my hands were so damn cold. I'm kinda glad I wasn't able to get out of 2nd gear because of traffic. So this leads me to my question. Can anyone recommend some good quality (read, not way expensive) cold weather gloves that still offer some protection? (Kevlar, etc) Or does anyone have any tricks to keeping the hands warm short of going electric? I'll consider battery. As long as I'm on the subject of cold, can anybody recomend some pants as well? (for future reference, long underwear will have to do for now) The Tecnik jacket I have does nicely with it's liner and extra neck guard. Its just the hands and legs that get really cold. I really like my Olympia Kevlars, but they just aren't good for cold. Putting on those little one size fits all gloves underneath only adds about 10 minutes of extra riding time before the hands are cold again. Thanks, Jerry | ||

Jerry, Olympia has a "mid" glove available that's much like your current glove. I got mine from Aerostich, catalog no. 427. They are $57.00. http://www.aerostich.com It was 38 yesterday and 42 this morning for the ride in. I have a 2 piece Aerostich so the cold is not a problem for top or legs. Gerbing jacket liner. No messing with harnesses up your sleeves to plug in your gloves, it's built in. Very cozy warm, too. The plug is the same as a Battery Tender, so you automatically get a place to plug in your charger. | ||

Neil, I'm running a Widder vest and gloves under my 'stich with the Aerostich fleece jacket and pants for the really cold mornings. I ride a lot through the winter and really give the gear a workout. The only problem I have is the electrical connections. Several times I've headed out only to have somthing quit working because the wires wore through or broke. The Widder stuff is very rebuildable, I just wish I didn't have to each month. After 3 years of use I finally just bought a new wiring harness and started over. The discussion I'd like to see is how do you keep your neck/face warm. I've got 4 different items (scarf, barclava, ski triangle windbreaker, ski neck warmer) that I use in various combinations, but sill running 80MPH in 20deg weather I usually wind up with cold air blowing up the inside of the faceshield and freezing my forehead. I'm using an HD jacket liner . . . . it was there (impulse buy!), on sale, and it seems to work just fine, thanks . I wore it on the slimey crud run recently (Northern Ill to Southern Wisconsin) . . . when I left the house, it was 27 degress . . . .although it warmed up a bit (high 40s?), I wouldn't have enjoyed the ride nearly as much without the liner (which also helps to sopt the drafts caused by the vents in my leathers). The grain of slat you have to take with this report is as follows -- my experience with heated clothing is limited to this piece -- I've never owned another keep warm | ||
