I posted this in the knowledge vault but wanted to cross reference it here since traffic is always higher.
I was looking for a post with similar symptoms but found none. My bike seems to not be recharging the battery. The last two times this happened, I was riding on the freeway and all the sudden it started hesitating and wanting to die. The check engine light came on, but it was real dim. Then the bike stopped running all together. When I went to restart it, I got the dreaded clicking sound of a low battery.
I charged the battery back up after I got it home, plugged it all back in and the thing ran great, till it did it all again... any ideas? |

voltage regulator and/or stator have gone south. |

wow an o4 battery going dead. I was worried about how tough that cooling fan is on the battery.
Here is my 2 cents. check the voltage with a volt meter directly on the battery terminals with the bike off and write it down.
Start the bike and check the voltage at the terminals again. The voltage should be higher than the off voltage....rev the bike a little (2500-3000 rpm) and check the voltage during the rev...should be higher than both.
If the voltage is higher when reved it probably is your battery. |

The fact you can charge the battery with an external charger, but you lose power
after riding a while is what tells me it's the charging system. If it was the battery,
then it wouldn't hold a charge to start and run the bike. At speed on the highway
your charging system should provide more than enough electricity to keep itself going
if the charging system is working. |

I talked to the mechanic who usually works on my bike and he was telling me to check those two things, but he feels it could be the battery just not holding a charge. They are supposed to be changed around the 2 year mark no? Mine will be 3 this August. Thanks for the suggestions. |

How do you tell if the battery is going bad BEFORE it happens? My bike is an 03' and still has the original battery. Starts like a champ every time but would hate to be out in the middle of nowhere and have it go south.

Sometimes it will weaken, sometimes it will just give out.
Sometimes they will last a couple years, sometimes they will last more. |

Yep, it's a crap shoot with batteries. Just keep an eye on things and if it looks like it's not holding a full charge quite as long or it seems to start slower now and again, do what I do and say, "I gotta do something about that.", do nothing and buy a new one when it craps out in front of the most expensive place in the world to have to buy a new battery, like a marina or BMW dealership or something. |

I know the desert heat here in AZ kills batteries all the time. I have about 18500 miles on that battery, so the combined heat of the dessert and that generated by the bike could have taken it's toll on the battery? |

If your battery is 3 years old replacing it is cheap when you consider the peace of mind that comes with it.

Another thing to check is all the connections from the stator to the regulator.I had the same problem,ended up that the regulator plug had melted a little and the plug wasn't making a good connection. |

Stator on my '03 XB9R just went bad on me, waiting on parts now.
What oil do you have in the tranny? |

I called up Daves yesterday to order my stator and some random other bits and bobs and he didn't realize that I hadn't been around BadWeb for like 2 years.
...feel the love. 
I'm itching to get my Firebolt fixed up...I love the Blast still, but it just doesn't compare. I need to get my BRAG membership renewed and get back into things. Stupid work and house...don't they realize that motorcycles are more important?!? |

I am having the same exact problem.
( Bike Starts just fine...riding for a while....then out of nowhere...rough popping sounds from exhaust..<a few second delay>..then jerky power delivery..<a few second delay>..then check engine light..<a few second delay>..then tach/speedo/clock go away..<a few second delay>..then headlight goes..<a few second delay>..then engine stops)
I bought the XB in Jan of this year. So far I have brought it back to Glendale Harley Service 4 times for the exact same symptoms...funny part is that the times between the outages(when the bike suddenly dies on me via problem description above) is varied from 12 hours after they "fix" the problem... up to 3-5 weeks after I pick the bike up from service....also if I put in a fresh new battery the bike starts up again just fine...but sure enough it will crap out again.
Everytime I take it to Glendale harley they tell me that they cant find anything wrong with the bike. they say the electrical, stator, reg.rect is all good. Then the last time I took it in the said they replaced the reg rect ( i doubt they did) but then the problem popped up again.
now they tell me it was a loose connection on the stator..problem sovled and that I'll never have to come back to them again for this issue....48 hours later I get stuck up in the canyons with my girl on the bike as well....I am so frustrated with the bike and the service...please update this post and let us other poor souls know what is going on with you...

BY THE WAY MY DEALERSHIP/ SERVICE DEPT at GLENDALE HARLEY SUCKS....THEY NEVER FOUND THIS even after 30 + total days in the shop.
For all other XB guys check this post.
This was EXACTLY the problem as described by Kowpow225.
the connector that sits directly behind the (right side) front sprocket cover of the final drive assembly. its a large blocky connector that has its male end on the bottom and female end on top.
This connector's female end ( the end that has the holes to accept the males end prongs) had one of its bay clips folded all the way up. this was causing intermittent connectiity when the plug was properly connected.
I actually found this by accidnent before reading the Kowpow225 post and came here to post the solution....anyway take a very small flat head screw driever (eye glass repair kit) and GENTLY bend the clip/tab in the faulty female bay back down....this will ensure that the clip/tab firmly presses against the male prong when the plug is properly connected.
since I did this I have had zero problems with my buell...and this lead me to do all my service myself...I am much happier and have never loved my buell more...
the facrt is that buell dealerships and service shops all SUCK..no matter where you go...and its those places that make people hate buell...not the bikes...becuase the bikes are freaking great.
