I saw about 10 in Tokyo in one day last spring!! There is a neighborhood in Tokyo that is nothing but motorcycle shops and dudes with crazy huge pompadours. Lots of Harleys stuff too. Grass is always greener... | ||

I hit port in Yakasuka and visited Tokyo back in the late eighties early nineties. It seems that American pop culture is a perpetual fad for the younger generations in Japan. I found that a lot of the people my age (then) seemed to enjoy practicing their english and were pretty friendly. Scooters and smaller motorcycles were everywhere with a few of the larger bikes mixed in. Tiered licensing (based on displacement and time riding at each level) dictated smaller bikes for the younger riders. It was very cool. One of the guys on the ship bought a domestic market GSXR while we were there. Good times! | ||

However, the good news is, since you're gonna be stationed there, you can bring your own bike there. However, quite honestly, you have to go through a couple of hoops, but it's semi worth it. If TMO will move the bike, cool. If they won't. Don't even bother with it. Just get a bike there. They're everywhere. Plus, you don't fall into the tiered licensing there. (You're American) Get your SOFA Stamp, and all I can tell you is watch out when the roads are wet. The roads as you probably have heard are made with Coral in the road..... Slippery as hell. Good runs include the ride to Fuji. Plus, you get the option of reenlisting on Iwo while you are there. Well worth it. Iwakuni is a bit small, but so what. Anyone that has ever lived on base knows that riding on base sucks. If you have never been there before, PM me, I would love to talk to you about it. I'm here at Lejeune for now. Mark | ||

Iwakuni? Woo-hoo! I was born there 46 years ago. Yup, navy brat here. I'd love to go back "home" one day. I also lived in Atsugi when my dad was stationed there. Now my younger brother is stationed at Atsugi. I sure did love Japan. 'course, I'm also half-Japanese. Have a safe trip. | ||

nutsnbolt, I will be with the USMC out there. You all ride near iwakuni? Im thinking there are alot of mountains there.....perfect for the buell..  Im looking at 3 yrs or so...you probaly know how it is. We got to meet up or something. | ||

Same Country different area...I was stationed on Okinawa a couple of times. Early 80's then mid to late 80's. That is where I got into sportbikes bad. I was in the Air Force though so had it pretty easy. what Nutsnbolt said is very true about the roads being slick when wet. Coral dust on and in the roads can be fun!!! | ||

Nutsnbolt: Your thinking of the Ueno district in Tokyo. There is so much cool motorcycle gear it's insane. I actually saw a perforated leather t-shirt. You get the idea. Unfortunatly at 5'10" I'm at the upper end of Japanese sizing and most of the gear didn't fit me. So if your ever in Tokyo, get off at the Ueno train station, walk up to a cop and make motorcycle noises while twisting your right wrist. He'll figure out where you want to go and point you in the right direction (it's easy walking distance from there). | ||

I have no idea what you are talking about. I tried to stay out of Tokyo on the bike. Picture NYC times 5. Best to just be the tourist there. Hit the Hard Rock, go to the restaurant that was in Lost in Translation and take a picture here and there and get gone. Tokyo's cool, don't get me wrong, but dude, you're scarin me with the perforated LEATHER T Shirt. If I saw a dude in a Perforated Leather T Shirt making motorcycle noises and twisitn his hand like hes on a bike, I might just write off Tokyo alltogether. All in good fun Hoax. Anyhow, yea, I've been to them all, Oki, Ryuku, Yakota, Iwakuni, Fuji, Misawa, Yakouska naval base, and quite honestly, The best Mairne bases are Okinawa, and Iwakuni. Fuji is cool to visit, Yakouska, is cool for some time off (yea, there's a few marines there.) You gonna be with 171? What's your MOS? Like Futenma in Oki, you gotta take the bus to just about everywhere in Iwakuni. Not so bad though. They have the best "Mall" of any base I've been to. Good Luck, Dude. mark | ||
