I learned the hard way today something else you shouldn't do while riding a bike which is trying to put on sunglasses while stopped at a traffic light. As I pull them out of my pocket with my ATGATT leather gloves, one of the temples comes off. It would snap back on if I wasn't wearing those gloves. So I can't put the glasses on with one temple, I have the glasses in my throttle hand and the temple in my clutch hand, can't get either back in the pocket with the gloves on. Then a lens pops out and onto the ground about two feet away on the left side. I am on a slight downhill so the bike wants to roll ahead. The only way to get everything where it belongs is shut off the motor and put the bike on the side stand, get off so I can put the glasses down and have an extra hand free. As I wave the irate car driver behind me to go past, the bike starts to roll forward and off the stand. Fortunately I anticipated this and catch it. Should have left it in gear. Finally just shove the temple, lens and the rest of the assembly back in the pocket, fire up and wait anxiously for the green light. At least there are some stupid mistakes that won't kill us. | ||

I think we've all been there. Planning before you go and then you are driving down the road and all of a sudden you say, "Aw sh!t!!". Just in time to realize you neglected to zip up your backpack. So much for clean underwear and socks...  | ||

It has happened to all of us, the more that stuff goes wrong, the more frustrated you get...so the more stuff goes wrong. It is a downward spiral, and it sucks. You did the right thing by stopping and waving the car by and doing it right. BTW, good job wearing your gear. ATGATT is important. It only takes once...... | ||

I only wear cheapish sunglasses (>$20)because of reasons like this. If I had that happen, I could just abandon them, and not worry too much. It sucks to drop, break, forget, ect a $200+ pair of Ray Bans, Oakleys ect, and it happens too often on a bike. | ||

If I'm going to be out until the sun goes down I carry a clear shield in my bag and swap as needed. I used to do the sunglasses thing, back before I started wearing helmets that are too snug to slip them in. Usually, if you can wear sunglasses with your helmet it is too loose on your head. Another option is the light sensitive films for your shield that darken in sunlight and become (nearly) clear when the sun goes down. I do wish more manufacturers would do a schuberth type of slide down tinted shield. The design has served the military well for decades, but not everyone has access to a schuberth dealer to try on their helmets and find out how they fit. | ||

Usually, if you can wear sunglasses with your helmet it is too loose on your head. This is simply not true. I wear prescription glasses (plastic frames), and have had no issues wearing them under a variety of properly fitting helmets, including KBCs, Shoeis, Arais, HJCs, and Scorpions (I'm helmet shopping, and have tried all these on in the last month). Some may have required a bit of wiggling to get the glasses past the pads, but once in they were comfortable and in the correct position. Even on a helmet that is too tight, I could still get my glasses in there. | ||

I too wear glasses, both clear spectacles, and prescription sunglasses. I have correct fitting fullface and open face helmets, and find no problems wearing glasses under them. My spectacles are ideal under the fullface; I have both tinted and clear shields. My sunglasses are plastic framed wrap style, perfect with the open face helmet for about town. If anyone needs a good pair, look for 'Rudy Project', developed for sporting pursuits. I'd recommend fairly straight arms on the frames, easier to slide into the helmet. | ||

For what it's worth (nothing): When not wearing my contacts, I attempt to wear glasses beneath my helmet. Properly fitting KBC Force RR... dislodges my glasses every other second. One side of the glasses will stay on my head, and the other will get pushed out towards the visor..making me look like a moron, and not providing me with adequate vision improvement. I'd side with Brian on this one. In my particular case - my helmet doesn't allow for proper seating of the glasses against my head. My sunglasses on the other-hand.. with their larger plastic frames work fine. I think this is subject to the style of frames worn, and their durability/ability to maintain original shape. |
