The previous owner of my M2 had the race air cleaner installed on this bike... which in itself is fine - however - he had IIRC a 1" or 1 1/4" K&N filter element - which means he also cut the threaded risers on the backing plate... I have long since replaced that filter with a standard Sportster one (still a K&N) - I believe it is 2 1/8" tall or right around there .. I had some problems initially keeping the screws for the CF air cleaner cover on since I could not tighten them all the way - I'd crack the CF cover. So I used washers between the backing plate and the threaded risers to get the right height - well it didn't really work , I still ended up cracking the CF cover on both sides of one of the holes for mounting it. I finally got around to fixing that last night (a few months later) I laid some fiberglass on the inside of the cover and it is quite strong now. But I need to fix the problem that caused it to crack in the first place. I need a measurement of the threaded risers on the race air cleaner so I know how far they are supposed to hold the air cleaner cover from the backplate, I don't need thread size or anything, just the height of the risers themselves. Like I said the PO cut these to make a smaller filter fit ... DUMB ! Also - are these risers integrated to the backing plate or just bolted on from the backside of the plate ? Thanks ! risers are bolted from the back of the plate, TS I won't be able to measure mine for a few days, but make em about 1/4 inch shorter than the AC element thinkness, and you'll be good be aware, the stock risers were concave on the outside end, to match the convex surface of the FC cover -- I'd guess a flat end on the riser might lead to stress fractures in the cover (again) mebbe rig up extenders for the risers using threaded couplers or something? |

He cut them off from the back side, so I have the concave surface. I asked if they were bolted on or integrated because the dealer shows it as one entire part with the backing plate .. which I can still buy for 30 bucks. But if I can just fix the risers I should be fine for a buck or two. I was using washers as extenders for the past few months - but I am running out of thread on the back bolts .. been riding with a crack that long. I plan to have a wrenching day here real soon to replace the front exhaust mount with the updated Y mount, and I want to do some carb work. I figure fix the crack in the cover before I mess with the carb. You think a 1/4" will be enough ? I also sent you an e-mail this morning regarding some metal fab. Let me know what you think.
