I'm not new to Buell (previous '96 S1 and '00 M2, and now a Uly) but I haven't spent much time at this forum. I think I'll make it my homepage! One thing that concerns me a bit is a loud, hollow-sounding rattling noise I get right around 2000 rpm. I don't think it's internal to the engine, I suspect that it's the engine rattling in its mounts or vibrating against some other hard part. Is this a common symptom, and does anyone know of a resolution? Eric Diehl '06 12X '04 MZ Black panther '02 Aprilia Caponord |

It's definitely not a ping. It's very rpm specific---starting and stopping as the engine passes a few hundred rpm through the 2000 range. It does it when the engine is first cold-started, and maybe to a lesser extent when it's at full operating temperature. It's pretty loud, sorta like what you might hear if you took a hard rubber ball and put it in an empty paint can and started up the paint-shaker. I should disassemble some pieces and look to see if maybe the heads are rattling against the airbox, or if the motor mounts look OK. FYI, I've got about 4,000 miles on the bike and I just changed the oil to Mobil 1 synth (takes a lot longer for the fan to start up now) |

Eric, Recently my 1998 S3 started making a similar noise around 2300rpm. I traced it to the muffler, there was a large crack on the front. I had it welded and the hollow noise is now there. I suspect that the internal baffles are after coming loose. My solution is to keep it above 2300rpm and I will eventually put a different muffler on it. |
