No way, I am sending my friends in Iowa BUCKEYE voodoo stuff! BTW, they found they like Central Ohio better than their home in Iowa. (You can check in but you will not want to check out!)

GO BUCKS!

I received the Ebay fan Saturday and started to check it out. It runs with lots of fan blade whine but no noticeable bearing noise. The fan is supposed to be salvaged out of a bike with 260 miles on it.

I wish I had measured the fan speed before I disassembled it. I need the info to calculate the expected fan life. I had to drill out part of the fan hub to get the propeller off.

Fan Components1

Fan Components 02

The following picture is of the plastic end cap assembly from the motor. The bearing grease is starting to spread out of the bearing mount hole onto the face of the end cap and onto the brushes and brush holders. You can also see the specs of brush dust clumping on the film of grease.

The brushes, brush holders, and armature commutator had a very light film of grease on them, like from a very fine light spray or mist.

Grease spreading on End Cap and Brush assemblies

Most of the grease was coming from the bearing on the commutator end of the motor. There is a fiber washer on the armature shaft, between the bearing and the commutator. I noticed the outside diameter of this washer and the end of the communicator were wet with grease. The washer was tightly clamped between the bearing seal and the end of the commutator. I pried open a gap between them (I'm afraid the commutator shifted on the shaft toward the windings when I pried) and the washer had been rubbing on the bearing seal. Grease had been flinging out of the bearing past the seal onto the washer and then out onto the areas described above.

Fiber Washer on Armature

The bearing seals do not look like contact seals to me. They are good quality, but do not appear to be contact seals and I am guessing at the seal material (viton). Therefor lubricant and vapor can easily get by the seals. The grease looks like a synthetic.
The bearing on the commutator end was made by NMB, Basic part # R-1350. The bearing on the fan end was made by NTN, basic part # 695LA.

The light scoring you see on the commutator is from the brushes, which are fabricated with scored ends to facilitate the brush break in process. This allows the brushes to quickly wear to the exact radius of the commutator. The brushes still had the break in bars, indicating it was a very low time fan assembly.

So where am I at on this problem?

I don't like the fact lubricant has already exited the bearings and mad its way to the motor brushes and commutator.

I suspect the bearing seals are a main part of the problem.

I don't care for the fiber washer being included in the design because it can be compressed onto the seal surface which is not rotating while the shaft and washer are.

I really don't know what the seals are made from, what the lubricant is, what the fan speed is and what the fan temperature is.

I need some help here to finish up. Does any one have a reliable cylinder head temperature for normal riding or maybe the air temperature coming out of the fan under those conditions (at the exit face of the fan)?
Does any one know the fan speed (rpm)?

I need this data to plug into the bearing life formula.

Thanks,

Joe

Wolfridgerider, I did not know about the Farrows ride. Oh well, I got to spend the day at the Delaware Fair horse races with a very nice lady! "JUG" day is this coming Thursday!
Now can we get back to this being a BUCKEYE thread?

It should be a great time. They will have the OSU vs Penn St on and racing starts around 7...If you can make the HOG meeting tonight at Farrows you can listen to my clicking fan OSU 38 penn 3

Joe,

See this post with temperature info from an earlier thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=142838&post=731687#PO ST731687

No idea on the fan speed.

Darn Wolfridgerider, I am going to have to make you my Central Ohio motorcycle news provider. I hear about none of this up here in Delaware!
What time is the "Downs" opening for this big event?
Oh, did you say you have a clicking fan?

Thanks guys, I have Teeps's head data (298F-336F) using an IR thermometer and Davo's ET data (397F) with a stock ECU.

I have reassembled the fan and will try to get some fan speed data today. I don't have a strobe tach but will try to simulate one using by rigging my van up with a timing light and remote tach; using the van engine to determine strobe sync rpm and the timing light to strobe the fan.

fan has been dying since 5,000 miles,at 8,000 i took it in since the kickstand recall was due to be done as well. closest dealer refused to pre-order fan. second dealer would pre-order as long as i left the bike with them. it's been almost a month.

this bike has been a total pain in the ass to own. buell needs to fix the dealer problem.

i'd post the born on date, but it's been so long since i've seen the bike that i forgot what it is.

"this bike has been a total pain in the ass to own."

Larryboy,

No offense, but it sounds like you are letting the dealer have their way with you. That might be why your ass hurts. It's not the bike's fault.

Have you called Buell Customer Service in the last month?

hey lowflyer, i tried calling the dealer..they're closed on tues/wed. it was understood between us that the fan was backordered and would take some time to get the fan. i'm not to mad at the dealer yet. i'm pissed at the first dealer that wouldn't even consider ordering a forking fan and tried to tell me that a leaf was in the fan blades. just a note..folsom harley sucks, don't buy anything from them. they've been horrible ..from me looking at the buell to trying to get warranty work done.

i'm really trying to establish a relationship with this dealer. evidently i'm going to need them quite often.

where do i find the buell CS # anyways? in the owners manual?

Yeah, the number is printed on the inside cover of mine.

I understand the need for relationship building with the dealer. I have the same problem. The last three times my bike has been in for service, something has been screwed up (i.e. oil overfilled, missing pulley cover bolt, missing rear shock reservoir retainer bolt, marred and overtorqued fork caps). They have corrected every one of those things, but it sure makes one wonder what else they have effed up. I learned after the first time to inspect everything before and after the service.

That said I think you will get past these anomalies and start racking up the trouble-free miles real soon. My bike has been very close to perfect. The fan rattles a bit, but hasn't quit. That is my only complaint so far in 10k of moderately hard riding.

thanks guys,i see the number here in the owners manual.

just talked to the dealer. still no fan,i didn't ask if they've done the other work that needs to be done or if they just shoved it in a corner to wait on the fan...i don't wanna snap just yet.

i've done all the work on this bike aside from one dealer replaced servo. so i know what everything should look like and the miles had better be dang close to what they were when i dropped it off.

Just a caution to anybody buying off of Amazon, they don't stock anything themselves, they just broker the sale for the item you buy. The item is then shipped by the manufacturer or a 3rd party that buys up excess inventory and they sells it out through Amazon or Ebay.

So, communication etc. plus using normal delivery means that it might take longer than you expect for you to get it.

I just hope the thing works!
