So, a few weeks back my fan stopped working. I swore up and down that it did. It was a hot day, and my leg was on fire. When I got off the freeway I noticed the fan was not running. I got home and the bike sputtered and died. I turned the switch off, and no fan. So, I checked the trouble codes, nothing. The fan would freely spin so it wasn't seized. I checked the fuses, good. Everything I could think of I did, and found no problem. Thought maybe I was just a retard, and the bike wasn't hot enough. Went for a nice ride in the heat, and got the bike HOT again. My leg was on fire. Still, no fan. So, at this point I thought I should bring it in for some warranty service at Vallejo Harley. They call me and say everything is just fine, there was no problem found, and the fan is working just fine. Mind you, I'm in a service industry, and have been repairing things for over ten years. I shrugged it off on gremlins, and picked the bike up (after being charged $100.00 for the diagnostics). I didn't complain about being charged for the work, since they said they didn't find anything. Picked it up on Saturday. Rode it home, parked it. Fan worked just fine. Rode it 11 miles to work on Monday, and 11 miles back home. On Tuesday I get on the freeway headed to work, and just before my exit the thing starts running like crap, sounds bad, and then engine light came on. I limped it to work (a mile), parked it, and at lunch checked it out. Well, I thought maybe just one cylinder was firing, so I checked those damn plug wires. Everything was ok. Then I fired it back up. Sounded like an open pipe. I look back by that fan, and notice the damn O2 sensor bung was completely broken. The weld had separated from the pipe. The bike is an '03 XB9R with 6500 miles. I called Vallejo Harley, and scheduled my bike to come back. They had never seen anything like it. Thank goodness my work had a pickup truck I could use. So, they replaced the pipe, and the warranty covered it. Anyone think that pipe got that hot that it weakened the weld? Maybe since that fan was not working, the metal got weak? Anyone have this happen? Thought I would share my experience. Later! | ||

No, couldn't get a camera back there. Basically I didn't even know if it ever was just cracked. Never heard and exhaust leak. It was completely broken. The O2 sensor was still screwed into the fitting, and it was just floating in the hole. |
