i have an X1 flyscreen in CF that i installed last weekend, had to flip over the stock S1 guage panel to fit in and look somewhat OK, but of course the guages and trip meter knob don't quite fit the same since the cutouts on the back of the panel are now on the front. i installed everything anyway, looks ok but...could be better. so, i either have to machine a whole new panel or see if an X1 panel will mount up to the handlebar clamp, and all my guages and idiot lights and trip meter will install in an X1 panel...any help out there?

The S1 gauges are not the same size as the X1 gauges. You'd need to enlarge the holes on the X1 dash to accomodate your S1 gauges.

stock X1 dash is plastic -- if memory serves me (it may not), there isn't enough meat there to enlarge the holes enough (check it, though, I've been wrong before)

custom aluminum needn't be too pricey

not to sure if S1 gauges are the same size as 98 S3's, but all I had to do to make X1 dash surround fit my bike was make some foam rubber filler panels, as my S3 gauges were smaller than X1's.
X1 panel bolted straight up to S1 handle bar clamp.
here's a pic.
