The perverbial bad luck has hit. Last night I was on a 1000 bike group ride. All was great. On the ride home at 2am, my bike started to lose power. So, I pulled over. As soon as I pulled in the clutch, the oil light came on. OH NO! I checked the oil level before I left for the ride. After inspecting the bike, I found the O ring on the top of the pushrod cover was pushed out and there was oil everywhere. This morning I installed new O rings on all the pushrod covers, but now it knocks very badly. My question to you is, What should I be looking for? It sounds like the noise is coming from the valve tappets. Could there be extensive damage? Should I be calling S&S? I was traveling at 70mph and I don't know how long I had been riding with the bike in this condition. The bike still runs good, but I don't want to ride it until I have the knocking taken care of. All advise would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Check the condition of your rocker arms, pushrods, and cam contact surfaces. Check for excessive wear. Sounds like a perplexing problem. What did you remove/disassemble when replacing the orings? If you removed the rockerboxes, did you let the lifters bleed down before torquing the rockerbox to cyl head bolts? |

Thanks Blake, I did remove the rockerboxes. And I did bleed down the lifters before reassemble. It was knocking before I disassembled it this morning. I'm going to take the bike to the dealer tomorrow to let them listen to it and maybe give me some advise. If they are no help(like usual) I will tear the top end down to look a little deeper. |

Brentx, Your story sounds as Raticalbuell`s tale who had his bolts loose with which the sprocket is bolted onto the rotor. He was pretty sure the sound came from the tappets. See the recent engine mechanical topic. Hans. |

Brent, check the tappets...you probably roached a roller and maybe(probably) scored a cam as well. Good luck, Pammy |

Anyone ever use ULX-110 oils? Website is -- http://www.liquidhorsepower.com.au/index.htm Like many others, I'm trying to decide which oil to go with. Thanks! Dan |

Any oil that claims to improve engine power is snake oil in my book. Viscosity is the only significant factor affecting power output wrt oil. Stick with name brands and oils that meet the most stringent performance criteria. |

I just picked up a 2001 M2 Cyclone last week and spent the weekend breaking it in. When I got back from a 100 mile ride on Saturday I noticed a small oil leak from the bottom of the air box. I check the oil level and everything was fine. On Sunday I went for another 100 mile ride and kept an eye on the oil and everything appeared normal. Is this something normal with the H-D engine? Should I be worried? |

Pj, Probably just blowby condensing and dripping down the inside of the airbox cover. Remove the breadbox once in awhile and wipe down the inside. This is the reason a lot of people go to catch-cans and breather bypass setups. More of an annoyance than anything if that's what it is. When you put the airbox cover back on, ensure you have it sealed well. Sometimes you can get gaps if you aren't carefull lining everything back up. |

PJ1: You might try letting the oil level drop to halfway down to the 1/2 quart low point on the dipstick. This seems to help eliminate excessive spewage into your airbox via the crankcase breather. Also, running good synthetic oil, especially during hot weather, seems to help some bikes reduce oil misting into the airbox. The favorite solution is of course to route the breather outside of the airbox. See pics in the "Engine - Breather" subtopic of the Knowledge Vault. |

I have a 2000 M2 with a Pro Series CF airbox, Thunderslide Jet Kit, and V&H pipes. What is the best oil I can use in the bike, why? |

ARGH! No! Oil thread! Just goofing with ya Doc. My advice (now brace yourself because you'll get all sorts of differing and contradictory advice) Run any kind of oil that meets the specs for your engine. Basically any oil that meets diesel requirements is ok. But if you do this you should change it often. By that I mean every 3k miles. I use Mobil1 15w-50 synthetic because it's available all over my area, it's relatively cheap, and it's synthetic. I have various reasons for running the oil but I've not had any problems with it. So...use whatever makes you happy and change it often. (Now...prepare for the on-slaught) |

I'm kinda partial to the Amsoil 20w50 for obvious reasons. If interested please check out my website and maybe help a fellow Bueller. http://www.lube-direct.com/ddunn Dan |

My local auto zone carried the Mobil 1 Vtwin. It is 20w50 and full synthetic. It is not out on display, but if you ask they have it. I would bet money that I am paying an extra $4 per quart for nothing more then a label and a minor viscosity change. I would bet money that Mobil 1 15-50 would offer all the protection I need and more. But for roughly $50 per year, I sleep better knowing I am running an easy to find high quality full synthetic (to protect against high heat from a big displacement air cooled engine with one cylinder blocked by another) and running the exact viscosity my original manufacturer indicated as being best. But like I said, I firmly believe I am paying extra for no more then elimination of that little nagging feeling Harley has spent a lot of time and money seating in my subconcious. Bill |

Bill, Actually the 15w50 Mobil 1 uses a base 10weight stock with some viscosity improvers to take it to a 15weight. The 20w50s by Amsoil and Mobil 1 use a true 20 weight base stock so they are much more stable. Dan |

Average in the north is about three pounds sixty pence to the gallon, or 80p per ltr. That's about $5.35 per gallon U.S, right ? Rocket in England |

Regular gas in Georgia, cheapest in the US, last week was 1.09 for regul;ar at discount stores (eg. QT). Since 1 US gal is 3.8 L that makes it $0.28 per L give or take a few pence. |

Peter, No, They have not compared it to Redline. Probably because it's too small of a market to use them for comparisons. |

Blake, I'm working on trying to find a banner that fits your size limits. Amsoil unfotuantely like to have very wide, short banners. Finding something less than 180pix wide is proving to be a challenge. Others, Please buy some oil from me so I can afford to pay Blake for placing an ad on this wonderful site!! http://www.lube-direct.com/ddunn Dan |
