Who else has added air holes to their 06' air box cover? I did it similar to the photo I saw of the 07' air box cover. Just got back from a 81 mile ride and did notice the increased intake noise. Honks on when you give it the throttle. I'm hoping it helps the mpg but haven't refueled to see how much it used. Everything else is stock on my bike in regards to the engine. |

I used a hole saw on my air box when I installed my race kit. |

I drilled and Dremmeled, filed to match the other side, also adding a Drummer and the race ECM, K & N too, now I can not tell if it made any difference! Too many things at once, and only a short ride to test. We will see. Mike |

Does the ECM compensate for the added airflow? If not, wouldn't the added air lean out the mixture? |

I'm wondering about that myself. Normally when you go to a stage 1 kit from Harley this includes a larger air filter and a new ECM chip. All I've done here is made it easier for the existing filter to breath at all rpms. Unless Buell has a different size injector or changed the ECM program on the 07' then I don't think I've done anything that the 06' ECM can't compensate for. Is my assumption lousy??? I haven't checked my plugs yet but will. I'm going to the dealer today to have them change out my rusty muffler on warranty so I'll let them answer this question and get back to you guys. One thing is for certain is that I can hear the difference in the intake noise. Sounds good to me. |

I copied the holes on the right side, and put them on the left with a dremel and a drill. I have the race kit, and the bike seems to rev a bit faster, but I havent really flogged it in the upper range much yet, so I am not sure how it does in the twisties yet. I really like the race kit. I can almost idle off from a stop, and can run in slow traffic much better than before. I dont really notice the "hole" in the midrange, there is still plenty of power for my riding style. I am not one for stats, if the bike gives me pleasure, and works well for what I want to do, I am happy. It doesnt have to have 150hp. Hell I have owned cars with 60hp that were a blast to drive. the Uly is everything I want it to be. It isnt perfect, but it is as close as any bike has come so far. |

What does cutting extra holes in the air box do to the warranty?? My thoughts are that if the ECM can adjust for lack of air(high altitude) it should be able to adjust for more air with a free breathing air box...(?) Has any one cut the extra holes and run the bike without the air box cover? |

hd.net states that a reflash is needed for the new airbox cover. |

What do you mean by "reflash"? |

I don't mean anything, that is what it says. I think it means a flash of the ECM (ie fuel and timing changes to allow for more air.) |

Is it saying that all bikes switching from old to new cover require reflashing, or is it saying that all bikes that shipped with the new cover need reflashed? |

Adding holes to the air cleaner will not give you better fuel economy. More air means more fuel and more power which will mean less MPG not more. Try cleaning up the exhaust system for fuel economy. But hey this thing already is the king of fuel economy so why bother. |

Thunderbox, I'm going out to finish off the tank of gas that I filled right after modding the airbox cover. I used 89 octane Ethanol and normally have been getting 140 miles until I hit reserve. I'll let you all know what I got by this evening as I already have 111 miles on the tank. I only have a little less than 3000 miles on the bike and the timing and tps have never been checked since buying the bike. |

I viewed it at a dealer so I do not have access here. It was on a page introducing new updates to the Uly. In the description it said that the update was a retrofit to the '06 with a reflash. (at that time is also said the '07 seat was not retrofittable, probably because of the ECM spacer.) Hope that helps. |

http://www.aluminum.nu/files/07modelinfo.pdf p.82 Seems like '07 bikes come with more holes, different mapping. I would think adding this box ( or more holes) to a pre '06 would cause no problems particularly if the bike has a race ECM. |

Here's the scoop on my 1st tank after the air box mod. I normally go to reserve around 140 miles. Every tank is right around that and that is kind of lousy gas mileage when I see you guys claiming 50 to 60. Anyway, this tankful I had my 110 lb son on the back for the first 117 miles and then just 205 lb me for the last bunch of miles until I hit reserve at 167 miles on the trip-meter. That is the best by a long shot for me. I filled er back up with the trip meter reading 184.5 miles and it took 3.817 gallons of 89 octane Ethanol gas for an average of 48.336 miles per gallon. Maybe I'd get better with 91 octane Premium. Apparently, letting the engine breath has helped my gas mileage quite a bit. |

I agree FTD Electra You should be running 91 or higher gas all the time |

OT, but I don't know why this " '07 Seat won't retrofit the '06 bike" thing keeps coming up. It does fit, and well. In fact the only difference between the pans is the part numbers, and by that I mean the quantity of part numbers. The '06 Seat has two part numbers molded in, with a paint-marked dimple indicating the color. The '07 seat has these same two part numbers in addition to two new ones describing whether it's an '06 or '07 and also again the color. Everything else underneath appears identical between the two. |

I am pretty sure that is stated because the seat does not come with the ECM spacer, did you add one? (I'm not saying it is needed either, just comes with the 'o6 low) |

Birdman, No I am not kidding. It is a simple question, would you please answer it? Why do you imagine I am "kidding"? Never mind, based upon your statement that "the update was a retrofit to the '06 with a reflash" it appears to apply to '06 models that are retrofitted with the new '07 airbox. |

My 10/05 built bike came with the ECM spacer already in there. My Low seat came with another. |

If the holes in the airbox give you better mileage why are the 07s rated the same as the 06s? It apparently doesn't increase HP on the bike either? So why did they bother to put the holes in the airbox???? Change for changes sake??? (Message edited by Thunderbox on September 14, 2006) |

Electraglider, did your riding habits change with your son on the back? I get unbelievable mileage when my 8 year old rides with me-often high 50's-low 60's vs. the average 47 mpg I get riding alone. My mileage really didn't start to get better until the bike had 5ooo miles on it. I've used 89 octane 2 times as it was all that was available. Mileage was noticably lower both times. I check mileage every fill up with the calculator on my cell phone. Just a habit/hobby I guess. Keep us posted. If the air box mod has any positive effect, other than more intake honk, I'd be happy to try it. I'm very happy with the fuel economy of my Uly as I'm getting an average 10 mpg better than I did on my Bagger. Tim |

I can almost idle off from a stop, and can run in slow traffic much better than before. Would you by chance be suggesting the race ECM's map might be a good (or possible) idea even in an otherwise stock bike, but one with a freer intake? The reason I ask, I need to do performance upgrades in steps, and right now lower RPM on my '06 seems quite lean. No ping, but some surging in traffic, and seems to get warm fast. If it were carbed, I would either raise the needle one notch or fatten the pilot... if that gives a point of reference. Of course, I have 1K miles on her... I'd be concerned if the factory saw fit to change the stock map for the airbox, but we don't. Or am I being a girlieman? (Message edited by red_chili on September 15, 2006) |

Fastfxrs, I'm going to start running premium 91 octane and see if things improve. My back plug crapped out on me, wouldn't run until I put in a new one. Tomorrow I'm going to ask the the dealer if they have that service bulletin about reflashing for the 07' air box. My plug wasn't sooting, just dark brown but apparently that was enough. |

Electraglider_1997, you really should be running 91+ octane. And do the fill up at the end of the main tank capacity if your gas pumps share a common hose for all octanes. The first hose full will be 89 octane from the last customer! Your ECM may be running your bike rich and retarding your spark timing to avoid engine damage from overheating and detonation. Neither should be good for gas mileage. BTW, I get 170 miles average per main tank full. |
