I have a 98 S3 with PM wheels on it. Recently I bought a second set of PM wheels on eBay from an X1 and thought they were the same until I put on the rear wheel. Seems the raised shoulder on the older wheel is .10 inch tall and the X1 wheel is .20 inch tall around the brake side bearing. I found some washers that are the same size as those on the axle outside the swingarm. Anyone ever mount an X1 PM wheel on an older tube frame like my S3? Did you use spacers or grind the wheel down? Not sure which to try. Thanks for any advice. |

FYI Apparently no one has had the same concerns yet regarding the use of PM wheels on various age tube frame Buells as I had. So I will share what I have learned for future reference. PM wheels made before 1997 have a .20in hub on the brake rotor side and PM wheels made 1997 thru at least 1999 have a .10in hub on the brake rotor side. Older wheels will not bolt up in a 1998 or newer Buell like mine as the caliper mount makes contact with the bearing hub. My solution on a used wheel I purchased was to grind down the hub to a .12in height and that worked for me. Use caution when replacing or buying PM wheels regarding manufacture date stamped on the wheel. |

That's great information to know; certainly the first I have learned of it. THANKS for the follow-up! |
