I have a Drummer SS, race ecm and Buell's free flow air filter on my XB12 and I wounder how common is it with popping on deceleration? |

Popping is fairly common in hard deceleration with the clutch engaged. SOMETIMES, the popping comes from a small gap in the fitting where the slip-on pipe meets the header. Check that seal and see if it still happens. Question, do you have an open airbox kit or have you drilled your airbox or otherwise altered your air intake besides changing the filter? |

I have no other modifications to the airbox than the free flow filter. But is the popping bad for the engine then? |

I have the Drummer SS only and also sometimes experience "popping" during hard decleration.. Same question as Riclyd... |

Any time you change the intake or exhaust, you should remap the ecm for the new conditions. Having said that, I think most people don't do it. I have the factory race kit, and it only started popping after I opened the airbox, so I closed it back up and it doesn't happen at all any more. But still check that seal at the header. A lot of guys say their popping has come from that. |

i had a fair amount of popping out of mine, but could see were a black build up from exhaust was leakink past where the slipon met the header, i used some exhaust seal and got rid of alot of the popping. it still does a little but not near as much. |

I just put the SS on my bike. Had the original, the D&D,and now the SS....no popping on decel. When I slid the muffler up on the collector I tightened it right at the end so the muffler has a good seal. |

Not trying to "Highjack" the thread, but, Bads1, I have a D&D right now and was thinking about changing to the SS...what do you think of the two now that you've some ride time with both? |

John there all pretty good. I changed mostly to quiet down but I found that the SS has smoother response.... much smoother. Do you notice on your D&D that just riding city around 35 that you can't find a happy spot. Like maybe you need third but if you do you'll lug the motor?? The Drummer SS is alright in 3rd. Kevin pretty much nailed it with a good pipe. Its pretty smooth everywhere across the board. My bike is I guess alot more enjoyable to ride. |

popping = oxygen in the exhaust, can be a bad seal or it also might just be the pipe. the more free flowing the more it will suck air in through the pipe outlet... no impact on the engine |

No... it can be a lean condition. Like I said I have had all the popular mufflers now other then the micron...no popping so a more free flowing pipe is not going to make it pop any more. |

popping = oxygen in the exhaust No, it doesn't. It's either a lean mixture OR a leak at the header. |

Just CHECK to make sure you don't have a busted stud or a loose nut...(though that's what most of my co-workers call me...) Also might use Screaming Eagle exhaust gaskets instead of stockers. They tend to hold up better. Every time I've gotten popping, it's been from a loose nut, busted stud or other form of exhaust leak at the flange. |

Have the Ops pipe and waiting for the MAP done by Terry Parsley. He said that it'll be done in 2 and a half week to 3 weeks. So, I have been having popping during decel as well. Pwnzr, you say that it's either lean or leak in the header (I think mine is running lean), but either way, is it bad for the motor? Thanks guys |

Speaking of flange nuts (that almost sounds dirty) mine are all rusted. It's the only thing on the whole bike that has rust on it. I scrubbed it clean once about a year ago and coated it with some oil but I assume that just burned off. I've looked at some other people's flange nuts (still sounds wrong) and seen the same thing, but some aren't rusty at all? Whats the deal, should I just get some better nuts ? (ok that's the last time I say nuts) |

Popping on decel ain't nessasarily a bad thing, it happens with an exhaust that's open, it's the nature of the beast. Of course your bike will run lean on decel, you let of the gas didn't you? If it didn't it wouldn't slow down now would it? |

Ebuella_virus (creative name I like it), Running lean or rich is potentially harmful to the engine in the long run. An exhaust leak is just annoying, I don't think it can really do any damage. |

Glitch, correct me if I'm wrong but I think the bike has to be running lean when you're in the throttle for it to seriously pop on deceleration. Closing the throttle also cuts off the air as well as the fuel, right? |

oxygen in the exhaust is the same as saying a lean condition. YES a free flowing exhaust CAN suck air into the outlet of the pipe and cause popping. no impact on the engine |

exhaust does not just flow out, it moves back and forth...pulses this is amplified during deceleration |

I'll see if I can get Kevin Drum to chime in, he's much better at explaining this than I am. You know who Kevin Drum is, right? |

I hate to "pop" your bubble but that sound is coming from the header, not the exit. There is a variation of the sound at the terminus but it's not the popping we are referring to here. Oxygen in the exhaust is not the same as a lean condition. A lean condition can cause a higher concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gases, but when you say the engine is running lean it means the AIR/FUEL mixture is wrong. The exhaust has no effect on the condition of the combustion, it is a product of it. |

this is what is happening most of the time...at the header collector clamp, alot of guys are not getting the clamp low enough to close the slots at the bottom of the inlet, the top doesn't matter as long as the two are mated to close the cracks up at the bottom...take a little extra time and look at the cracks and place the clamp in a few different positions to see if you are getting the cracks covered....popping on decel just happens from letting off the throttle and the throttle plate is closed and no fuel in the pipe just air and the mixture in the header is lean, not the combustion chamber...your not lean everytime you hear it pop on decel, your header mixture is lean, so check your clamps and fitting where air could enter the exhaust and make sure they are tight and sealed off...I'm running the stock ecm and open airbox with the Drummer SS on my race bike and yes it pops on decel from hard engine braking and no it's not lean, I'm reading the mixture at the stock 02 location and all is well.. www.kdfab.com Kevin |

And that exactly what I said about the collar clamp around the header collector. Hey Kevin funny hey??? Kevin and I discussed this very issue on the phone yesterday while this thread was taking place.lol |

It's OK to run the stock ecm with an aftermarket pipe? |
