My speedo needle just started bouncing. It seems like it only bounces when I let off the gas, or pull in the clutch. If I let off the gas and pull in the clutch at freeway speed the engine drops to idle and the speedo needle goes to 0 mph. The rest of the time, like when i just let off the gas the needle drops and bounces. However, when I give it a twist the needle pops right back up. Anyone had this problem or know what is causing it. The bike is an '03 xb9r all stock except exhaust. Thanks! |

It is real common for the speed sensors in the 03's to go bad (might have been a recall but im sure others will clear this up) It is a real easy do it your self fix and if I am right it is under 60 bucks for the part. |

My speedo wasn't quite like that (sometimes would read 0mph for entire ride) and granted mine's an '06 but it had metal flakes on it causing it to not work sometimes. It doesn't sound like that is your problem though. Doesn't hurt to check. Sam |

if i can remember right, remove the front sprocket cover and I think its the grey four pin conector, it should be right behind the front sprocket held in with one screw/bolt. I think you can get it out with out taking the sprocket off but best thing to do would be to get a service manual. its answers a bunch of good questions and the pics are a pretty good help too. |

It's a hall-effect sensor, meaning it's triggered by changes in magnetic fields. If it has metal shavings stuck to it, it wouldn't be able to "feel" the spinning countershaft. |
