the other day i went out and started my bike, turned on the engine switch and the fuel pump came on as usual, but when it would normally turn off, it just like kicked down a notch, still running but quieter. turned off and tried again, same thing. i had no choice but to ride it to work. got to work, tried it and it was fine. hasnt done it since. anyone else have this?

My fuel pump is a freak. It's LOUD, it's quiet, I never know what it's going to sound like next.

Not saying something isn't wrong with yours, but variable sound doesn't necessarily mean it's failing. Mine's been doing it since I bought it 3 years ago.

wasnt really the noise as much as it didnt stop. usually it will run for like 4 sec or so then shut off, then i start my bike, this particular time, it ran for like 4 sec, then switched to the slower speed and kept on running, like it didnt prime the injectors right or failed to make the pressure. i am not sure how it works, was just out of the norm.

ohhh that's different. Mine runs for about 4 or 5 seconds, and stops every time.

Pupu

i just posted same thing in KV. Mine is doing just started doing the same thing you explain.

the two suggestions i got was either the fuel pump might be failing, or that the battery might not be so good.

I am at loss myself, my bike starts up regardless just fine and runs great otherwise.

huh, i did a search and looked in the KV, i didnt see anything on it before i posted, just checked for your thread and didnt see it either. maybe i was looking in the wrong section. weird it doesnt do it anymore, just that one day, and only those two times. my battery seems fine. i thought the pump might have been failing, like it could not produce enough pressure. i have my 10k coming up anyways, i will have them check into it.

Isn't the fuel filter maybe dirty and the pump battles a bit to get enough fuel trough, How many miles on you bike now..
Justa thought.

I'm confused. Doesn't the fuel pump run, in order to provide fuel to the motor, when the motor is running?

yes, it does run while the bike is running, but this all happens before i start the bike, but when you first turn it on, it runs for 4 sec and then stops, i assume all bikes do that. but with the bike off, it stayed running. i have about 9k on it now. could be the fuel filter, i wouldnt think it would have corrected itself though. i might pop one in, they are cheap enough, an you can never have to clean of a filter on there. but it is ok now, i plan on going to buellton for the get together, would hate to be somewhere between here and there and have something happen.

i have noticed mine running after start up for the first time recently. i dont know if its louder now or im getting enough miles on her to finally start hearing all the little quirks.

performance has not been an issue i just turned 1600 miles and had the 1000 mile service a week ago.

This has happened to mine also. The exact same condition. It has not happened in the last 3 months.

On my 04XB12S when my fuel level is low I can hear that fuel pump. Every time I start it it sounds freakin crazy kind of like different toned buzzes. But, It always starts and runs fine. kind of sounds like "wrrrwrrrwrrrrrrrwrrr"

I second Xbeau. Its louder when the fuel is lower.

It's building pressure up in the lines.

My XB9 has done that before, a couple of times. When it does, the secondary noise is weak and variable, like the fuel pump is trying to run but doesn't have enough juice.

The first time it happened it worried me; now just like all the engine noises, I figure it is just standard operating procedure. It has always started and runs fine.

If there is something wrong, it is just going to have to get worse before I tear into it.

Good luck,
Bill

Xring. That's exactly what mine sounds like. Like it's dying kind of. It has done this for so long I think it's just the way it is. I know they can go out and if you stop real hard on an empty tank it will throw a little fit until you start up again. I love it's little faults.

sounds like it could possibly be cavitating? anyone else. try cleaning your fuel lines. that happens when the lines or filter get clogged it builds pressure on the engine side of the pump and forces the gas back towards the pump working against it.
