I remembered again the hard way today why I don't like the suspension on this bike. It doesn't have any. I watched my wife lay it down when the front tire locked under braking and washed out. Lowspeed so the only thing injured was her ego. And today I just washed out the front end when the truck in front of me stopped short. I just wish it wouldn't load up so quick under hard brakeing. Totally steals any confidence that's gained from its nimbleness! It's be nice if the triples and forks from any of the other Buell line of bikes were a direct bolt on with a modified axel.

Just venting.

Didn't we warn you about riding your wifes Blast?

That was the first thing I noticed, the very first time I rode the Blasts, the front brake locked up easily!

it used to be about $80 to change the front springs...great change and worth the money the front end is infinatly better. I've had it so long I don't remember what it was like before

Who'd ever thought the Blast front brakes would be so good!
I think the #1 Blast accident is when the front washes out under hard braking.
On my first Blast ride I slammed my nuts into the tank when I hit the front brake "Sure dont stop like my ole' Shovelhead"!
A inch full of washers in each side of the fork legs will help that problem and its cheap and easy to do.
The more expensive helps are Pirrelli tires and a Crossroads fork brace.

You must learn to use you front brake with your rear brake at all times ...

That way it is less likely that you will lock up your front wheel ...

Rear Brake?!! No. I just need to amend the front suspension so that it is equal to the stopping power of the front brakes. Springs and fluid sound like the cheapest route ...and it could use the new rubber, I'd just like to wear these tires out first.

...How does the fork brace help?

It equalizes front breaking preasure on the front making the front end less likely to pull to either side during very hard braking.

Without the fork brace you can feel the way the bike will 'twitch' or pull one way when brakes are applied hard. The fork brace really helps stabilize that.

oh yes the fork brace...that takes the cost of better braking up to about $200.00 which still makes it worthwhile...product improvement at it's finest. The cool thing is my wife understands product improvement.

This reminds me of something I need to do again. Here is the cheapest and best braking improvement you'll ever make.

Find some place with no traffic. Run the bike up to 25 mph and apply the front brake gracefully untill the tire locks, then release the brake immediatly. Practice this, until you can quickly lock the wheel w/o launching the rear, and can release the brake once this has occured.

After you master this, change the routine so that instead of releasing the brake entirely, you only release it enough to allow the tire to begin spinning again. Be careful with this because if you hold the front locked for too long you will drop the the bike.

For me, the most risky part of riding, is the urge to nail the brakes when I get scared. That is almost always the wrong thing to do. I practice stuff like this to try and counteract that urge.

I'm just spoiled by my other ride. With her I can do all sorts of stuff and she's always forgiving.Nina's Blast on the other hand has a *different* idea of what Our relationship should be(more respectfull).

David - EZ has bar end mirrors on his Blast and I really liked them. I think he said the pair was $20 at a bicycle shop.

ya know i locked up my front in traffic, and ended up doing an "endo" to a stop at the white line. didn't wash at all, and im riding a factory dunlop on the front, but i have a 130/70/zr16 dunlop qualifier in the rear..hehe. this comes from my offroad days, when you lock the front, you become the pivot point not the triple. lay the brake one rear to front and you will only lock the front whilst under complete fubar control

No doubt about it, those Dunflops suck it hard. ANYTHING would be better. I switched mine out asap. So much happier now...

All I need to finish my upgraded front end is a Works kit and some CRG's. Galfer SS line, Galfer brake with a CrossRoads fork brace keeps the front from getting frisky on me. I do need to stiffen the shocks to make the most of my front end mods though.

You know Works makes a lot less expensive 2 way adjustable shock as well for the Blast - you should ask if they have a sale price on one - its been said though that if you find a track rep you can get them cheaper, I just called them and ordered mine, with the heavy duty rear spring - no extra charge, rebuilt once at no extra charge - great folks and product!

For the front end? Hmmm......that's interesting.

I was talking about the stiffer spring kit that they had coupled with heavier weight fork oil, I think it is 7.5.

I Got my wife (and me) a blast for here to learn on and have been reading on here so I decided to work on the suspension so I ordered this very nice 01 yamaha yzf r1 shock

But after I got it I realized its too big with the resiviour attached like that. I did more searching and came up with this Triumph datona 600 shock with a remote resiviour.

It is fully adjustable, looks to be close to the proper length and there are alot of them avalible cheap on ebay. I got this one for 45.00 with free shipping. I will report back when it arrives.

Then I ordered the progressive suspension springs and a fork brace.
Is the recomended fork oil still 7.5 weight? Im about 200 lbs.

Most people mention using difrent weights of oil to tune the forks but what about using the oil level to fine tune the ride? Also what is the "gold valve", what are its benifits, and where can I get one?

I ride a ullysses and am spoiled by its excellent suspension, but this little blast is a blast to ride!
