So I am going to try out this KV thing and see where I can get.
I have a brand new '06 XB12R (just passed 3000 mi) and I just met my first gremlin. Every once in a while, becoming more often, my speedo will not indicate any speed. The needle still does its startup sweep but doesn't budge when I start down the road. The next time I ride (usually only after the bike is completely off with the fan done running) it works fine. Then sometime later it happens again. This is baffling me.
I found a post here saying this issue was caused by a faulty speedo sensor but I thought this issue was fixed a few years ago, as per that post. What I am really trying to find out is what any of you have for input on this matter as my closest dealer is in Seattle and I try to avoid the traffic there as much as I can.

Make sure your battery cables are torqued to spec and use loc tite. Solved that same problem for me. |

Will definitely check that out, do you really think that'll be the issue if my tach and everything else are working just fine?

ohhh no, sorry both guages would be affected. Can't hurt to make sure though. Check the wiring behind the tensioner pulley. There is wiring there that leads up to the speedo, a mechanic accidentally cut mine when changing the belt about a year ago. |

Well no problems since checking out the plug for the speedo sensor and the sensor itself, maybe that worked. Thanks for the input.

Well, it happened again. I turned the bike off completely, turned it on again(while coasting), and speedo worked again just fine. Then again same problem same fix but after I had stopped the bike. Weird. I am willing to bet it's the speedo sensor. Now I just have to convince a dealer that. Or if the sensor isn't too expensive I might just buy it myself.

Ok just for future reference, check your speedo sensor for metal shavings if this happens to you. There were quite a few on mine. I'm positive this'll fix my problem. I'll definitely let you all know if I find out different.

Yeah I do seem to talk to myself a lot, but I figure if someone else is having the same problems they can do a search, find my thread, and be able to get a possible solution right away.
Update again...
So I was riding about 400 mi the other day and near the end my speedo stopped working again. When I got back home I pulled the speedo sensor out again and what do you know, more metal shavings. Wiped them off again and worked fine afterwards, granted not nearly as many shavings, but I am starting to wonder if something in my tranny is starting to become a ticking time bomb.
