Hi Everyone, Please forgive me if this has been asked before (1st post and new to the board) I have recently taken delivery of anew XB12S lightning and am loving it. UK spec bike. Can someone tell me why Buell have not fitted a sidestand cut out switch. (All my jap bikes have had them) Maybe someone has done a mod if so whats involved. Thanks in advance. It SHOULD have one that kills the bike when you let out the clutch. The US versions do I dunno for sure about the UK bikes. | ||

Almost every Buell that I have owned (7) that were fitted with sidestand cutout switches failed in dangerous circumstances, such as when overtaking a car, and were eventually bypassed or removed completely. This was a common problem during the tube frame era so maybe Buell just decided to cut their losses and not bother fitting them at all. They were more trouble than they were worth, although I think that they may now be in contravention of some 'construction and use' law in the UK by not fitting them. | ||

my 03 has one, but i think they stopped using them on the 04's | ||

They did stop in '04. My '03 switch went out around 13k miles. It's like 10 dollar part and seconds to replace. It did cause all kinds of problems when it went out. Took a while to diagnose the problem. | ||

My '03 had the switch & my '06 does not have one. The '06 models have a different stand geometry. This can be seen when the bike is laid over onto it's stand it rolls back and down some. This can be a bit alarming until you get used to it. When the bike is taken off of the stand the stand moves to a perpendicular position due to its spring geometry. This is done so that if you forget to retract the stand and ride off - the stand, upon impact with the ground will be forced up without much fuss. I have inadvertently done this at least twice and it does work. | ||

The 03 sidestand switch can be bypasses by connecting the 2 wires going to the switch together. | ||

I rode a Kawi 600 at Keith Code's school this week and before one of the sessions the bike kept stalling every time I put it in gear. Couldn't figure it out until somebody pointed out the sidestand was down. I thank God my 05 Lightning doesn't have that feature. | ||

As someone who's crashed once because he forgot to retract his sidestand, I'm all for these safety devices. Hey, I was even STUPID enough to disable the bike's "safety feature" because I didn't like the way the stand self-retracted when straightening the bike (the side stand was spring loaded). There's a REASON manufacturers do these things. Even someone like me, with almost three quarters of a million miles under my belt, and 16 years of teaching rider safety with the MSF have an occasional mental lapse... As long as the redesigned sidestands on the newer XBs prevent these kinds of accidents, I'm good with it. A know a guy who wasn't nearly as lucky as I was. I wasn't hurt... he's in a wheelchair because he's paralyzed from the waist down... | ||

I have had a few of those "mental lapses" and left my side stand down and taken off. It flips right up as soon as you turn to the left. Pretty cool design! | ||

Couldn't figure it out until somebody pointed out the sidestand was down. I thank God my 05 Lightning doesn't have that feature. As Jaimec says, be glad Kawi 600 you were riding on the course DID have that feature--better to be embarrassed about it in the pits than find out on the first left-hander! Most bikes I've ridden over the years have had a sidestand switch--you do get used to them. The only time one failed on me, it failed to disable my bike when I took off with the sidestand down. I was fine--just a bit of a scare--but the guy I was riding with told me of a buddy he'd had back in Oz who'd died from a sidestand-induced crash. I'll keep my switch , thanks. | ||

I removed and bypassed the switch while I waited for a replacement to be shipped. Never put it on. My Harley doesn't have a sidestand switch either. I can't think of single time I've left the kickstand down, so not really an issue with me. | ||

I've been riding on the street since I was 16, but it wasn't until I was 42 that I took off with my sidestand down. My sidestand switch had failed years ago and I never replaced it. Thankfully, the little rubber thing at the end of the stand whipped it up. I'm still not going to replace the switch, but I'm not gonna remove that little rubber thing. |
