Greets folks. on my way to work this morning, via Starchucks, and I notice that the clock reset to 1:00, and the two trips reset as well. ODO is fine. Anyone else have this happen? And, you'll never believe this, I don't, but two 'ends ago, me and the lady set out from Copperopolis in the dark and ride home to Modesto, 30 min or so, get home and her tush is a bit sore because???? ... that's right, she rode home sitting on the triple tail in the down position. She didn't realize it was down when we mounted up! I don't believe it, do you?? |

I think Eor had the reset thing happening on his bike. I dont think it was resolved before he traded it in. |

I think the clock/trip reset can be caused by a momentary interruption in power. If you're not seeing any other power problems, you might check the instrument connectors in the wiring harness. When I have to take the trouble to do that, I usually take a small brass bristled brush and hit the contacts with it, then I put small amounts of dielectic compound on the female connectors before I put them back. Yep...happened to me as mentioned. I was told it was caused by short/open wire and the wire harness was replaced after I traded the bike in. |

There is a power connection to the instrument cluster that provides power to the tripmeters, clock and low fuel trip (beware of this one as it can catch you out - don't ask) when the ignition is turned off. I currently have a break in this wire where the loom flexes around the steering head. The machined lugs on the steering head had a really sharp edge that the loom conveniently rubbed across. In my situation this is easily demonstrated by sweeping the bars from lock to lock - the speedo and tacho 'sweep' and the clock resets as the backup power wire 'breaks' then 'makes' again. By the time this became obvious the loom had been given a really hard time and so far I have had the instrument back-up power, the neutral light and the ground return for the horn broken. I am having trouble getting this repaired under warranty as Buell Australia won't replace the loom - they will only authorise repairing wires and despite several attempts by the dealer that hasn't happened. However, in your case I have seen Badwebbers in the US have had their looms replaced under warranty so if it turns out to be that you should be in luck. The other thing that could cause this reset is bad battery connections / low charge in the battery. These conditions can cause the voltage going to the instruments to drop low enough on a start cycle that the clock and trip meter memory is lost. There are several references to this in the Knowledge Vault.
If you take off the flyscreen and take off the headlight and 'beak' as an assembly this area is very easy to access should you want to snoop. |

Here's a brief story about the problem and solution on my Ulysses: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/207872.html Since replacing the battery (my own expense)the trip and clock have been fine. I would suggest checking the battery connections and terminations. Especially the ground termination on the frame. (Message edited by teeps on August 16, 2006) |
