Let me apologize first for not knowing how to post multiple pics at the same time. This is the cliff notes version of my weekend that couldn't come soon enough. For a little background on the story, as many of you know, I won the Buell/Playstation helmet design contest. After getting over the initial shock of actually winning something (let alone a new Buell) I was contacted by Erik (the Godfather) just to say congrats etc. and Mary Jo who is a Marketing V.P. at Buell and was told I would NOT be getting my 06 XB12R in June as promised. Better yet they were going to give me an 07 XB12R but I had to wait until August. Also Buell would now be picking up all setup, taxes, tags, etc. for the bike and I had to pay absolutely NOTHING... WOW!!! Sounds like a fairy tale huh? I also got to pick which bike I wanted...so I took the black/cherry bomb XB12R...no brainer aay. Maybe the best part is I get a one of a kind helmet from my original design...which is cool enough for me to see my 2 dimensional computer design come to life on a real helmet. Especially since I never designed a helmet before this contest. Anyway...the weekend for delivery of the bike and helmet came, and I haven't been able to sleep all week with all the anticipation and excitement. My helmet came on Friday night and looked AWESOME! Depending how the light hits it you can see all the fine detail. Not sure the photo will do it justice.

Then on Saturday it was time to go get the bike. I had the bike delivered to Battlefield H-D/Buell in Gettysburg which is approx. a 45 minute ride from my house. My whole family was going along to support me. My Father-In-Law, Frank rode along down on his 05’ Deuce and I rode my 03 Lightning. My 5 yr. old son Mason wanted to join but peddle power only gets him around the block.

The dealership had my bike parked out front by their cannon like it was the center of attention…which it was…everybody was looking at it when I pulled into the sea of leather and chrome which was 90% of the parking lot.

After sending a few minutes looking over the bike I met Judy, who is the Buell technician at the dealership and also the founder of the local BRAG chapter. She was so excited to meet me and shared in my love for Buells. Judy came in on her day off just to spend time with me and go over the bike. She did all the set-up for the bike and changed the TPS when she noticed a hiccup during her test ride. She was great and so was the bike!

Wayne was the salesman at the dealership who did all my paperwork. He was a true Harley man but loved my helmet design and treated me like royalty. He took me around and introduced me to almost everybody in the dealership from sales, parts to service, where each department gave me a small gift for winning the bike. I left with T-shirts, mugs, detailing kit, etc…it was cool and I felt like a celebrity.

After we were all set to go we took off for the ride home. My Brother-In-Law, Jeff, rode my baby (03 Lightning) home. It was a fun ride for all of us…but especially me on my new addition to my stable.

My wife threw a big surprise party and all my friends and family were at my house when I got home. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. Sunday I went for an early morning ride to the lake for some more photos of the 07’.

I want to say a special thanks to Erik Buell for creating a super bike, picking my design and taking the time to personally contact me. Mary Jo Weibel from Buell for all her time and support. Battlefield H-D/Buell, for treating me like I was Tom Cruise for a day and especially my wife and family for all the support, but most of all reminding me that I’m not Tom Cruise.

i won a bike back in 1998 (an H-D). you'll still get a 1099 statement with the value of your prize as "income". so be prepared to pay uncle sam 30% or so of the value in taxes....... (STILL way cool) D |

Absolutely fantastic story! I'm graphic designer myself and totally agree that your helmet design is well-deserving of the win. It's great to see talent and initiative get the pay-off they deserve. CONGRATS!! |
