I have a small clunk in the front end and I'm guessing by reading a couple of threads that it might be the steering head. How do I go about re-torqing the head bearings? |

Get a service manual. It is an easy thing to do. You need to lift the front of the bike off the ground Loosen all pinch bolts Torque the steering neck bolt to spec Torque all pinch bolts Done |

What DaveS said except... I wouldn't loosen all pinch bolts holding the fork tubes at the same time. The fork tubes will drop; when I got my bike they weren't even and I figured that is what happened. The service manual calls for loosening only the bottom pinch bolts (4 total). Bill |

The tubes slid when I did it by loosening all the bolts for me too. Hmmm, just loosen the lower ones. Makes sense. See, you need to get the manual. I didn't have one handy when I was working on the bike. Called the shop and got the torque specs but not the directions. Learn something everyday on Badweb. |

Since we were on the subject I figured I'd go and retorque mine while I was thinking about it... And I'm going about my business methodically, torquing to spec, and.... *SNAP* WTF!?!?!?!? anybody else had this break on them before? I didn't go past the torque spec in the manual 17-19ft lbs. it snapped at the same time as the wrench clicked, and its a snap-on so I know its accurate. time for a new one, just got off the phone with Al at American Sport Bike. Gonna get this one:

Pwnzor, Sorry buddy I was too late , was going to tell all to Watch out for that torque they will break, Less torque than the manual calls for Here ,I think this was talked about before many times here in the formus... Buddy of mine did the same thing, Twice ... Also I do believe to get the bearings set 100 percent right theres also something like a small scale like a small scale to weight you days catch of fish etc.etc Wheel has to be turned one way or another and you pull with the scale and see how many lbs it takes or something like this , Its all in Da book once again, All should have the MAnual... |
