Yo Guys and you women too! Recently I installed the baker smooth shift kit and replaced the spring plate in the clutch with one friction and two steel plates, filed the grooved shift drum etc. I had a heck of a time with the pawl adjustment because I did not know about grinding it down. Ever since putting it back together I have had a problem with 2nd to 3rd shifts where every 20th shift or so it will feel like a clunk and then engage, it's worst on high speed shifts. When I had the tranny apart I did kiss a burr on a worn dog and I assume now this is my problem, I didn't realize they need a sharp edge. I also understand there is a new second gear in Y2000 so my question is as long as I am buying gears should I replace 2nd and third gear and put in the updated 2nd gear? I can get the tranny out no problem so what is involved to replace gears? Simply remove the clips that hold them on the shaft and slide a new gear on? Are there any bearings or bushings to replace? Any good pictures in the knowledge vault? I really want a Baker 6 speed but that will have to wait until I embezzle more money. I also understand that Joker has a backcutting gear service, has anyone tried it? Wouldn't it run the risk of cutting through the case hardening? Also I found that when I did the pawl adjustment on my bike with the .116 drill bit the pawl ended up biased to the downshift side. By that I mean when you upshifted and then held the shifter in that position the follower did not quite make it to the valley of the detent. When down shifting and holding that position the follower passed the valley a little bit. I ended up setting the pawl so the follower passed the valley a little bit in each direction. It fixed about 80% of my clunky 2nd to 3rd problem but now the remaining 20% is getting to me and I think it's because I filed the edge of a dog. I must have thought it was like the synchro on a Borg Warner T10..... Thanks! |

My dogs on second gear went bad at about 50K. The damage was not even really perceptable. The dogs looked like little keystones in mine with the wide part facing out. My worn dogs looked like straight perpendicular instead of angled. P.S. I wussed out and paid a shop to do it) |

I would like to pull the transmission and just let a shop do it and let them check out all the clearances etc. Can't seem to find anyone that does tranny's, didn't ask my HD dealer, afraid of the cost! |

My "dog job" cost in the mid $700 and it shifts like new now. They replaced all of the bearings in the trapdoor and second and third gears. Remember thast it's just a sporty transmission. You can probably get an independant guy to do it. |

Really these transmissions are a brezze. Someone with some decent mics and calipers can handle it. Follow the manual , ask mechanics about how they like to set clearances and see what kinda small details you get. Since your ass is on the line here and your bike anyone should think twice but if you can use these tools and double check everything its a piece of CHERRY PIE. |

I did my own, had a friend to bounce questions off. It still works. |
